Agree 100% with Phil’s assumption. Picked up iPad Pro 2 12.9” in 512gb Cell model. Have been using it since they were released and sold my iMac. Zero issues and actually more functional.

Okay now that I got that out of my system, if you look at his actual words it’s all marketing doublespeak and he’s not really committing himself or Apple one way or another. People like me who can replace a desktop with an iPad Pro will hear that part of what he said and agree. People who need a full computer for their workflow will nod and agree with that part of it. For once he hedged well enough not to dig himself into a hole.

I think Phil is right here, because he contextualizes what a "computer" is based on use-case.

I think though, that Apple is milking the "you need both devices" for all it's worth; they're a hardware company after all.

Why sell you one device when they can sell you 2?

This why I believe the iPad has, is, and will always be crippled in some way until Apple is ready to kill the Mac altogether.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing an iOS-based 2-in-one or Surface-Studio-like iMac as long as the iOS limitations are removed.

A touch enabled laptop/convertible (form-factor) is compelling. I fall in love with the functionality of my ThinkPad's matte, touch-based display more and more.

Apple could bring back the iBook name and replace the MacBook (not the Pro) with it as a convertible. They could even have one with a built-in pencil (like the Lenovo Yoga).

So many possibilities...but no visionary, so were stuck with emoji faces...

Statements like this are just insane... there must be at least 100 reasons alone why iOS can't and won't replace an Mac (or any other PC) anytime soon (for the majority of people). Apple just released a $5000 iMac Pro, and this is the best first thing he can come up with.. IMO he's absolutely delusional
Well he says that for some people it can replace a Mac as a mobile computer.

He's correct. You aren't one of those people, but those people do exist, and a few of them have posted here. Even if you don't believe them. Even if you think they are figments of his imagination. Even if you completely deny their existence.

Even if you think he is delusional for claiming that such people as are posting here to agree with him do exist.

Yup, definitely. Can it do every task out there? No. Can every computer do every task out there? No. That's why we have plenty of choices for the right tool, but it's certainly a very capable computer that can handle a large amount of tasks for the majority of people. Not recognizing this or seeing it as a viable computer is extremely short sighted and is typically reserved for those holding on to the old desktop mentality that think a real computer is only one that can code or run specialized software. It's time to move forward.

It's a computer just like a smartphone is a computer.

The number of computer tasks you cannot do with, say, a MacBook Pro, is very limited.

I can list a huge number of tasks, ranging from very normal to specialized, that the iPad either cannot do or does not do efficiently.

Yet other than pen input, there isn't much an iPad can do that pretty much any laptop/desktop in the past decade can't do, and with better ergonomics.

So sure, the iPad is a computer (as is the iPhone and the Casio FX-991 calculator), but to pretend that it's simply "old traditional" thinking and everyone is just afraid of change is among the most BS arguments I've seen put forth on this forum.

not until it can run legitimate programs and handle external drives. Until then it's just a big phone.

Phil Schiller only cares about pitching a device with the highest profit margin. If he was in the car business he would try to sell you a $20K bicycle that he claims can replace an equivalently priced $20K car. While he's not 100% wrong if you live close enough to your daily commute destinations but the majority know that a bicycle can't replace a more capable and versatile car.

Let me know when iOS allows for multiple users to sign in to a single device. Until then, this is a poor replacement for a computer.
This is what stops me from buying an iPad Pro. I can't justify that much money as a parent on a device just for myself. I don't want the kids getting into my apps but their own are fine.

While i am a big fan of the iPad use it in personal and professional life, i do not feel that it can replace a traditional desktop for many of the things that i do. I create multimedia interactive eLearning projects. There are no development apps for the iPad, nor are there likely to be any.

Nice metaphor.
[doublepost=1513115892][/doublepost]I think "What is a Computer?" is a great commercial. For the average person, the iPad and its suite of applications are likely to meet their needs. For the younger generation, they do not have to relearn a new way of doing things. The current average user just does not produce/create much complex content. But there are ways to create wonderful multimedia content that is linearly consumed (videos and papers).

I would need a proper Finder and Preview to start to consider. However, these two apps have been degrading alarmingly lately.
Are you talking about "Preview" app being degraded in the Mac? If so, I have to disagree. I have found it to have more features than in the past.
I agree that the "Finder" equivalent in the iOS is significantly lower than the Mac OS. There is not ability to search within a document in the "Folders" app.

If you read what he actually says, he's right.

An iPad can replace a PC for some people. I met someone recently who doesn't use a PC - their iPhone covers everything they want. When his business expands and he needs digital invoices then an iPad would take care of it.

Apple aren't crazy. Look at what they released today... the iMac Pro. They know people needs Macs, and those people often need a lot of power.

They aren't saying the iPad has replaced the PC. If they thought that, why release the ultra-thin Retina MacBook?

If they had Final Cut Pro for iPad then it might replace my laptop.
i have been reading want watching tutorials about the LumaFusion video editor and it looks really impressive. Based on what i have seen, I do not think its a replacement for what a professional TV or movie editor would want to use. I think it may be very capable of meeting the needs of a professional Youtube creator (shorter videos and shorter takes).
