Yeah but phones have a return policy, cars don't. I've read posts of people opening 3 or 4 boxes until they find the "perfect" iPhone after coming back with scratches. Try doing that with a car. So yeah not a "recall" but you can get a replacement or just return it totally.

Most people usually buy a car off the lot, so they can inspect it for any damage before purchasing it. If they have the car shipped to them, they can refuse to purchase it if there are scratches. In addition, this whole "it's like a car" thing is ridiculous because many times (in my experience most times), a scratch on a car can be buffed out unless it gets really damaged.

The main point is a recall is an auto manufacturer saying, "Yeah, we ****ed up, bring it in, we'll make it right." Apple is saying, "There is nothing wrong with the phone, deal with it."

Sometimes I wonder how Apple come up with their excuses.

By recording their customer's hilarious rationalizations on iRumors.
Goldmine of absolute brilliance.
Every company should be so lucky. :D

An extremely thin film or clearcoating applied at the riotzone would have prevented the problem.

Then make it out of something else!

I don't want to spend that much money on something that is prone to scratching.

Glass - prone to breaking
Metal - prone to scratching
Plastic - prone to scratching and cracking, as well as being ugly

If you don't want it to scratch get a case, and phone ever can scratch people, my goodness..........

Seems to me that Apple have selected at least twice and entirely inappropriate material/coating for a device intended to be handled continuously?

Notwithstanding that, for interest, my Motorola RAZR which is nearly 6 years old is made from "black' metal and has no noticeable marks or scuffs; so it is possible?

Yes it is possible - here is a guy taking a key to the 2012 RAZR MAXX - no scratches and feels good.

Scratching is normal after regular use over time, not straight outta the box. These Apple execs are delusional sometimes.

move out jony ive, move in damien hirst iphone 6, this might be scratch proof but totally unaffordable..... but at least it might shut up some moaners (about scratch/ es/ ing)

Hey guys check out my new iPhone! It's the thinest iPhone ever!! I know you can't tell though because I have it in a huge case. That's only because it will scratch if you fart in the general area of the phone. No worries, though - I have a case!

My friend says his less than one week old iPhone 5 looks like a cat got a hold of it.

All of a sudden my iphone 4 with a glass back is looking quite good.

All iPhone 5s are less than one week old...? Maybe if people took better care of their products, they wouldn't get all messed up

Don't insult my intelligence. LOL!
Normal use of a phone with a metal back shouldn't cause scratches. I don't know what the hell some people doing with their stuff.

He probably has other anodized aluminum products? Just like about everyone else?

Still no one knows exactly what process Apple is using and if it's "cheap" or not.

And how many of these are dings out of the box, which is a manufacturing issue that needs to be fixed, vs someone getting a perfect phone and after a day or two it's full of scratches. I mean its amazing how many reviews I read that never mentioned having any scratches. But come here and basically if you look at the phone the wrong way it scratches. It was the same way when the new iPad came out. In the iPad forum there were constant complaints about the screen and anyone who said they had no issues were basically told they weren't looking hard enough.

What do you need a "huge" case for? The phone is so light the chances of breaking it if you drop it are not very high. So there is no point in having a big and/or bulky case. They do make slim cases you know. I just bought one.

It's a process engineering issue. Bob Mansfield would have responsibility.

If scratching is normal for any aluminum product, then why the hell did Apple choose aluminum?

Apple was known for using the best possible materials. Now their defense of an inferior material is that failure is "normal"?

Welcome to Apple 2.0. Have they jumped the shark?

Wow, Apple's child army of apologists have come out of the wood work on this one!

My take is, you're buying a premium device, not a run of the mill Android. This is how Apple markets it too. You don't expect it to last forever unblemished, but you damn well expect a premium product to be made to handle day to day use better than this appears to do.

And of course, it should be in mint condition out of the box.

For those of you saying "just put a case on it".... you're the worst kind of apologists. Sad, sad little men.

I understand that the coating can scratch. My problem is that it scratches way too easily. The coating just seems to be so thin. Not good at all.

if what they used was not cheap, they and the consumers must be idiots to have paid for that "not cheap" low quality anodizing process.

Huh? I thought Bob was responsible for the technology inside not the case. At least in the iPhone 5 intro video it was Jony who explained the manufacturing process, not Bob.

It does scratch, but it's unacceptable when its scratches out of the box...

I agree its fine if it scratches as it will with time. But when you have dents taking it out of the box that is ridiculous. My black iphone 16g was the same way one ding on the top & another by the vertical stripe on the side.....sad....

FINALLY!!! some bloody common sense! u forgot to add weight in that list mate...
the ignorance and arrogance of people are scary :(
we should do a "flame test" too...and see how the plastic phones fare
