Phil Schiller Says iPhone 5 Scratching 'Normal' for Any Aluminum Product

i have a black aluminum mt bike that doesn't have many scratches at all...and that is after 10-15 years use.

I thought anodized was supposed to make it stronger? does it just make it shinier?

(My bike is a matte black aluminum)

I still don't like the way that tester vandalised an iPhone for a test just because it wasn't his. Incredible disrespect for property that wasn't his.

Your friend is either full of crap or greatly abuses his iPhone. I have no case on mine and set it on all sorts of surfaces, expecting it to scratch, and it doesn't. Still looks brand new.

It's metal, it scratches... wtf. Go buy a plastic phone.😡
 
This being Apple, there is no excuse. A different finishing method should have been used or aluminum shouldn't have been used at all.
 
People bitch and moan that the glass back can crack, so Apple switches to aluminum. Now people bitch and moan that aluminum scratches.

No pleasing some people..
 
As a black iPhone 5 owner (the phone is black, not me) that hasn't been scratched yet, this doesn't bother me. I accept that it will get scuffed up over time, and if I'm really worried about it I can get a case. I would have been a little miffed if it came scratched though, so I don't begrudge those users their unhappiness. In total, I am not really worried about it. I am always looking at the side with the screen...
 
Vehicles scratch easily and they are clear coated. You except a bare aluminum device to withstand scratches?

I understand the device to be mint out of the box. No doubt.
 
They probably did it on purpose to reduce the re-sale of used phones.

If the phone looks scuffed/scratched then people are more likely going to go for a brand new phone and line apples pockets, rather than buy used where apple doesn't get anything.
 
Yeah, lets have a poll in a forum where people go to complain about issues to see what percent of purchasers had an issue, then quote that like the number has validity.

Yes, anodized coatings scratch off. But then so do plastic devices. I'm sure that lovely (and grotesquely oversized) G3 has plenty of scratched phones right out of the box.

Sure, the phones probably shouldn't have any marks from the factory, though to be honest, a lot of iPhone buyers (esp the early adopter, preorder types) are WAAAAY more detail oriented than the average consumer & probably even more than Apple QA. People that will be walking in to a store in a month to buy their iPhone are unlikely to even notice.

For that price that shouldnt be necessary.

iPhone 2 and 3 we're easily scratched.

iPhone 4 - I never at a tiny little mark - love the glas.

My daughters iPhone 5 is already marked of use - and it's 2 days old :-/
 
The "scuffing" on mine looks like they simply missed coating the aluminum in those areas. Needless to say, had that **** replaced the very next day.
 
Well, actually he is right. It's just incorrect question. He should've address the issue with scuffed iPhones right out of the box.
 
36%? Yeah right. The people who were scratched disproportionally probably went to the poll to complain and make their angry voice heard. I highly doubt that over 1/3 of iPhone 5's CAME scratched.

BTW mine has 0 case and 0 scratches.

Well, just in that it has a clear anodized finish. If you scratch it enough to reveal the aluminum under the anodic coating it's much less noticeable. Aluminum is brighter than aluminum oxide (unless it's "bright dipped anodized" which has a mirror finish. I believe some older iPods were bright dipped)

Anodized finishes are very hard with fantastic abrasion resistance but when you're point loading...like the tip of a key, it will scratch. Just like any plastic case, painted finish, etc.
 
Rub the scratches off

According to the video these scratches rub right off. Not as bad as it looks initially.

And I know this doesn't apply to marks on the device that come fresh out of the box. I have a small 1 or 2 of those, but they don't bother me one bit.
