My iPhone 3GS was a scratched up mess, and the coating on these iPhones is no different from that of the 3GS, it's just dyed black.

Jesus people whine too much.

Only the iPhone get's this much attention over something that insignificant.

So, basically.... Your saying "Apple designs the phone to look nice. Why shuld we have an ugly case"

Thats what it comes down to...

And. Then people say "i scratched my iphone".

There has to be a boundry smewhere.

People are actually more careful with thie $40,000 car than an iphone. That what suprises me.

Phil, Tim and the rest of the crew are probably sitting around laughing their butts off that they had 5 million people in only 3 days buy their latest product that comes with scratches and a poor map app. And these same loyal customers go to extravagant lengths to make excuses to protect Apple. Laughing, all the way to the bank.

Schiller's reply, while factually correct, seems a bit condescending and uncaring to me. Kind of lacks the charm of Jobs' one or two word responses.

Jobs would have said the same thing to a guy that never said it came out of the box like that etc.

'Aluminum scratches' would have been Jobs version, with none of that "I'm sorry that" stuff

Here is an example of the paint chipping off of my iphone 5 above the lightening connector; not that I care, but it does undervalue Apple's obsession with aesthetics.

Agreed. It made him sound like they knew the problem and proceeded anyway. I would be different if this were some exotic process or metal but its just plain ole aluminum. Saying that's a property of the material they selected for the application and for the buyers to deal with it so early in ownership is simply Apple forgetting their roots and why they are on top. A steady decline may soon follow.

Howcome I've never seen ANY photos of these scuffed/scratched iPhones?

...Seriously... can somebody point me in a direction of some pictures?

For the record, I have a black iPhone 5 I got shipped to me on release day and it is flawless. Of course, I have it in a case... but I just took it out to clean the case of dust and it's honestly perfect...

LOL...normal. My 4S isn't all scratched up and i've had it for a year. Wife's 5 scratched up in 3 days.

The back panel should have been made to last more than three days of normal wear and tear use. This is simply unsatisfactory. Horrible process decision and horrible PR addressing the issue.

I was in the store today, and the scratches wipe off. I asked an employee and he let me use his keys to scratch up one of the phones like in the picture. The scratches wiped off the back

it IS a flaw in manufacturing

No those scratches dont swipe off dumb poster!

It is a design flaw, I saw it myself in the apple store.
Looks like apple failed to bake the paint on the silver alloy long enough and uuse enough of it. nothing worse then Phil not admitting to something so clearly obvious. dont lie to the people who have made u very rich.. dude!

go back and fix the iphone paint issue for phone being made in china at this moment for christmas release.

iphone5 is really chipping off

Just received my iphone5 on Friday and started to use it two days ago. Today I found my iphone5's paint is chipping off.....yes, two days, ONLY TWO DAYS!! It got chips! I'm a very careful person. My iphone5 is always in the pouch and I haven't even removed the clear sheet yet. I don't know what it would look like a week after....

**I don't put my phone with any keys, coins or even tissues. But it still got scratches and chips!!! And I barely use my phone when I'm working.

Four comments up from yours.

I'll take the thicker and heavier Gorilla glass any day over scratch-prone anodized aluminum.

I don't believe the back of the iPhone 4/4S was ever Gorilla Glass, and it had a tendency to break pretty easily.

Have you watched the drop test videos of the iPhone 5? After watching would you still choose the all glass design over the aluminium unibody?

Based on some of the comments from actual iPhone 5 owners, I'm beginning to think Apple shouldn't have gone with the black paint… but I'd still choose the this over the shatter-prone iPhone 4 design. I wonder if we'll be seeing a much higher proportion of white iPhone's purchased this time around.

Oh gosh… and they haven't even started selling the multi-coloured anodised iPod Touches yet! White might be the colour to get with those too.

Some Chinese factory worker got his head kicked in while building the thing and we're complaining about scratches. Only in America. smh

This just in: iPhone 6 will be made completely out of rubber so it won't shatter or scratch.

2 days later a video will be posted on YouTube of a woman giving her 2 year old a box cutter showing how susceptible it is to damage.

Screw them. They are going through the same stuff we did a long time ago. Ever read about what happened when the Ford plant here in Michigan tried to unionize?

i think the scratches are made especially by unhappy iPhone factory employers - maybe... i just guessing....
