aluminium rusts when exposed to oxygen, so basically all iphones are rusted. Scratch it and it scratches the rust off. Give it a day or two and it will go back to it's original colour

Shout out to Phil

Hey,
Didn't you guys take over a company called Liquidmetal Technologies. Liquidmetal alloys are made of a mix of titanium, nickel, copper and zirconium, among other metals.

What is Al doing with IP5?

According to the video these scratches rub right off. Not as bad as it looks initially.

And I know this doesn't apply to marks on the device that come fresh out of the box. I have a small 1 or 2 of those, but they don't bother me one bit.

Nice, all the whiners here should watch this video.

The 5 looks much tougher than the 4 and a lot of your common scratches will "buff right out".

Seems an odd choice of material for a portable gadget that is going to be kept in bags/pockets.

My four year old car has been used as the manufacturer expects and I can safely say none of the paint has scratched or chipped off.

Yes, but do you carry it around in your pocket?

Okay Phil, then tell me why are some people receiving iPhone 5's scratched right out of the box?

Phil doesn't need to. I already did that for you in my previous post.

Millions are produced in factories and are held by many people before getting boxed and shipped. Nuff said.

Next 'non' issue please..

Many act like Jesus is making these iPhone's and placing them safely in their boxes.

Dear Phil,
If it really is normal then you used the incorrect materials / process to design this phone. And if it's normal, then why is Apple replacing everyone's iPhones with scuff marks even though the official company policy is that these scuff marks aren't a problem?

I'm a HUGE Apple fan and have had / currently have a lot of their products, however; this arrogant attitude that "nothing is wrong" and in the past "if something IS wrong - it's due to your actions" is why a lot of people still hate on Apple.

Did the email tell Phil that it was scratched out of the box? No it didn't. Phil assumed the person scratched it during normal use and you can't blame him for doing so since the email wasn't very specific.

Maybe people should look after their phones more?

The way i see people throwing their phones about....there is no wonder they are scratching

Next apple will be bashed for not inventing a materiel that doesn't mark no matter if you hit it with a hammer

Just throwing this out there

He should have said "It gives character to your iPhone 5". We asked our design team on how to give individuality to each iPhone 5, they worked on it for 3 years. It is a complex process and it Just Works. Every iPhone 5 looks different.

On the other hand, people like Phil Schiller always put their foot in their mouth.

The others use plastic, which breaks. Each material has its pro's and cons. They could have taken more durable stainless steel, but the phone would have been too heavy and people would be complaining likewise.

I guess the pro with plastic though is that you could easily replace it yourself and would cost very little.

The iPhone 3/s was ideal for this. Mine was pretty worn and had a crack above the dock connector. £7 and 10 minutes later, it's got a brand new back cover.

Holy hell.

It happens!

Are you going to complain about your car being susceptible to scratching?

Maybe the phones should be DLC coated, then people would be happy.

Get a case!

However, most of the posts I've seen had to be magnified to see the imperfections. In those cases I would shrug my shoulders and say, "it's going to have those from a week in the pocket anyway" and move on. If it's larger and clearly visible, then yes, get it replaced.

Whenever my dad would get a new car, the first thing he'd do was crawl under it and wack it with a hammer on the underside.
Put the first dent in himself to get past 'perfect'.

Always found that endearing.

Four issues with new phones

1. Incomplete coating showing smooth shiny metal underneath. Not a scratch

2. Top coating scratched during machining or handling on assemblies line. Gouge or dent.
These have been seen right out of the box.

3. Coating flaking off leaving base metal exposed.
Progressive manufacturing defect.

4. User exposing phone to hard and abrasive objects damaging housing.
Similar to bezel, Apple back logo, and screen scratching seen on other Apple products.

1,2, and 3 can only be corrected at the factory.

4. Maybe a case, but for those who insist on going naked the phone could really look like hell in two years.

Never ever buy a 1.0 release of an apple product (or any other manufacturer for that matter).

This is why I like my iPhone upgrade cycle -- 3GS, 4s -- or what I call, the bug fix releases. All you fans going for the "big update" versions, thanks so much for helping apple make my "tock" cycle iphones rock solid and bug free :)

Niahahahah :D

When are people going to stand up to Apple releasing substandard products? The iOS6 was a total joke, still is practically an alpha build with a wholly incomplete maps app. Then you got the iPhone 5, supposedly made with "premium, high quality" materials and yet it comes scratched and dented right out of the box. I thought this phone was manufactured like a finely crafted watch? A good watch doesn't scratch and ding after two days use.

People, you need to vote with your wallets here, or Apple will continue taking shortcuts in order to maximize profits. You guys are getting hustled and you don't even see it. How many times are you going to watch Apple drop the ball and them come out and say it's no big deal? Look at what's happened with this company the last couple years, and tell me....do you really think they care about their products? No, they only care that you're buying. The Apple logo is strong right now, maybe more than it's ever been. I strive to see this company get back to the way it used to be, but their love for money has trumped all else and as long as the armored trucks keep rolling in, this kind of thing is going to be all the more common.

I took one look at your signature then laughed. Nice try troll. Unless Apple invented a new element, this is high quality ok? Take chemistry before commenting again please. I wonder if your S3 looks as good as a severely scratched up iPhone5? doubtfully

Left pocket - Wallet/Coins/Keys
Right pocket - iPhone

If you've ever owned an iPhone in the past you'd have learnt this by now :p

Yeah I do the same (only in the left pocket).
I'm just a little surprised that it may scratch easy- I have an old red iPod shuffle and there isn't a scratch on it despite it being through the wringer... I guess if the paint is bonded to the metal and the metal gets scratched deeply you've got a scratch- but no pealing.

Ur telling me your cars paint has no rock chips and is perfect?

Maybe the iPhone isnt for you....look into the samsung s3 or nokia lumia

Certainly nothing noticeable. The paint on the car is suited to being used as such. I would argue that anodised aluminium, that is showing scratches so quickly, is not the ideal material for a product that is going to be stored in pockets and bags alongside keys and coins.

As it happens, I do have an S3 having sold my 4S last year, but I follow with interest Apple's product line-up.

Coming soon: The iPhone 6, with an iridium alloy back :p

Aluminum is softer than stainless steel, no way around it. Sure, all the diamond tooling cuts it like butter and polishes it to a mirror finish, great for mass manufacturing, but it's still much softer than stainless steel.

I just took my 1 year old black 4S out of it's Belkin TPU skin, buffed it up and it has zero marks on it which suprised me after a year of daily use. This allowed me to trade it in on Amazon for $450 (like new condition) and get the 5.

My new black 5 is beautiful out of the box. It went directly into this Cellet black TPU skin. This is the best case I've seen so far, fits perfectly and covers all of the metal with a soft glossy feel, very nice and hopefully will protect the 5 the same way. I like it so much I picked up some spares, looks like they are out of stock now, but this is a great case for those who like sleek slim cases.

http://cellshopper.com/store/product.php?productid=15587&cat=21423&page=1

It remains to be seen if the anodized black finish will mar or "gall" from any grit that should get into the case.

One thing for sure, the 5 will look more worn than any previous iPhone if it's just kept bare on your pocket, guaranteed. Drops will ding the metal and the black will wear thru on the edges and sides. So protect it, or embrace the fact that it will "wear like any other aluminum product".

Most of us appreciate the beauty of our IPhones regardless of which model it is And Apple using anodized aluminum which scratches easily is defeating the goal of high standards and beauty.
Have to put a case on this phone where I. As well as others will not be able to appreciate the beauty or thinness of this phone. With all the materials available why anodized aluminum?

Do you complain when you get an unpopped kernel in a giant bag of popcorn as well,

Nice! I liked that one!

Yes the tooth that hits it, will complain (customer)
The guy who made the whole bunch, won't care... (Apple)

So in fact you are undermining your own statement.

BUT: <--- I still like your comparison.. I'll use that one.
