iPhone unmatched today? Yeah, you got that right spot on Phil. (sorry for the sarcasm)

I love Apple, I do, I REALLY do... but they are so full of themselves... their hubris is clouding their vision and they don't seem to notice or care about it.

In all honesty, the 1st Gen iPhone is a feature phone as that's how it was marketed. Just look at the ads from back then. All about the simple and easiness of using an iPhone. Can you recall a phone that did all that in a quick and simple manner?

I look at how Jobs presented the phone, and the way he explained why there was a need for such a device was down to earth and revealing in contrast to the high profile celebrity PR monster Apple has become now. Jobs stripped down the brand to the basics, but I feel Apple software is becoming more of a framework rather than organisation that defines the basics and enhances how humans interact with technology. They have become like IBM, trying to ride all directions rather than the road well traveled. (See how IBM fared against Microsoft)

Tim Cook has done an OK job in regards to stock price, but not in the way Steve Jobs did it according.

When I read about three new iPads being released this quarter, I can't see how another size or color will help this company, even though I believe the hype of AAPL stock won't die overnight. FaceBook has had an enormous growth over the years, and is disrupting the web browser, e-mail and other legacy applications that got its start on the desktop/laptop. This is happening due to the software revolution Steve introduced with "desktop class" software on mobile. Take a look at the table below.

Since we don't have anyone or any way to sort out all the information on the Internet, content is getting replace by context, and that translates to our friends. Zuckerberg has been great directing his FaceBook application from a simple web app to the leading time consumer on the planet. I know everybody likes to throw spears at FB, but the concentration behind the product is clearer than the philosophy currently at Apple.

Voice mail was very nice.
I'm not saying otherwise. You are. Jobs' keynote focused on the easiness of any task vs what people were used too back then.

Just recall how Apple tackled voicemail, SMS and basic apps (hell even YouTube) vs what the industry did. SMS used to be a clunky mess, voicemail you had to call in, watching YouTube? Goodluck if your phone did not support flash or had the capacity to.

Pinch to zoom was big, as was an actual web browser on a phone.

I'd used a web browser on a phone prior to the iPhone - very functional. Safari was a bit nicer, I have to admit but was that down to the UI.

utterly non-sense. I am surrounded by Siri, true i.e Apple Watch, Apple TV, Mac & 2x iPhones, yet I considerably enjoy using my Alexa more.

She f&**ing responds every time and gets it right with its 7-8 microphones, even when I am in the room next door.

Apple Watch Siri, painfully slow, Mac Siri limited (hello smart home?), iPhone Siri I am not sure how this works anymore actually.

I say Alexa and simply add my command right after while I am summoning her. boom, genius. iPhone? No idea how it works anymore. Do I have to wait for the tone to come or can I speak straight away? Does the line has to move?

Siri on iPhone is a joke and I started hating it after I realised how flawless Alexa works. The matter that I can just say it all in one sentence without any pause or uncertainty when to speak to my AI makes Alexa so much better.

They have to add offline capabilities to the "Hey Siri' phrase. I want to kill myself every time I use Siri in the car on the go.

iPhone didn't actually support SMS for the first year or so.

What are you talking about? Of course it supported SMS, you couldn't use ancient MMS services in the first year. You were also not able to see how many character you typed which was non-sense anyway.

My first gen iPhone had SMS. I believe you mean mms

Not that anyone even wanted to text back then. What was it, .25 cents a text?

Ah yes - thanks! MMS

MMS was more expensive. Carriers took the piss over SMS
Messaging- it cost them virtually nothing. Pure cash cow.

Why are you so mad?

Also once again, Phil, and by extension Tim Cook, have to follow up a missed opportunity by excusing Apple's lack of presence and innovation through a reactionary public relations statement. This is becoming the new norm for Apple. This company once defined the conversation, now Phil and Tim have to draw up statements only after big tech events and successes by their competition to make sure consumers don't forget about Apple by reminding them how great Steve Jobs was.
Yup, they keep reminding us about the "past" and about how great Steve was. The thing is, we all know how great Steve was. We don't need to keep getting reminded by it. We know. They know. Let's move on.

I know they want to stir up nostalgia but Apple needs to look to the future because the past is past and they seem stuck in it. We get it. Groundbreaking. In another 5 and 10 years, we will revisit this topic again and reminisce. But like how some didn't like The Force Awakens and the wink to nostalgia can be overused in Fuller House, Dweedle Dee and Dweedle Dum need to show us if they can get out of Steve's shadow and make Apple great on their own merits. So far, nada. They just keep dragging Steve's legacy into the present to cover up Apple's current lack of new ideas.

Makes me think of Al Bundy selling women's shoes. His biggest claim to fame was scoring four touchdowns in a high school football game. At least the Woz gave us the Apple ][. Tim and Phil have given us hyperbole and another reminder on how great Steve was.

iphone 5s, 6 , 6s and 7, aw, airpods. All new. iphone 6 was responsible for most valuable company. It's your right to an opinion that iphone 6 = Al Bundy, but it's my opinion Tim released a phone Steve would not have and it paid off wildly for apple.

I remember when the first iPhone came out. My two year contract with my Treo was ending and I had to decide if I wanted to switch. The lack of an App Store kept me with the Treo for two more years. My first iPhone was the 3GS, and like others, I jailbroke it for the ability to play music while using the device. I also wanted folders. I have no need to jailbreak these days since it implemented the features I wanted, but the device took a while to come into its own.

Well, I would be if Jobs is still here, the phone would have evolved much faster vs what it is now...

I expect my servant to carry out my commands instantly - she is not doing it most of the times! Extremely annoying when you are driving when you have to tell her for the 10th time to just call someone.

Lol, it's a program not a person. I understand your frustration but getting mad doesn't change it. All I use Siri for is to set my alarm. It's useless on the go

Still miss the graphic quality of the original iPhone interface, the current iPhone looks bland, flat and boring... vale Scott Forstall... sales are down as the new iPhones are too expensive... And I love Apple, but I can't justify those prices to upgrade. SD

I for one do not miss the insanely low resolution display and graphics. Or the tiny screen on a device the size of a brick. I'm going to assume you did not mean graphics and you mean you miss the old icons

It is absolute nonsense to describe the iPhone as 'earth-shattering'. It was a significant step forward in the art, but it was only an evolutionary step. Palm/Treo had been offering smart phones for a number of years before the iPhone emerged, and had a significant third-party developer base offering a wide-range of applications (including satnav).
As much as I like to crap on Apple at the moment, I have to Agree with Phil (gulp), the iPhone was a massive change to what came before and dare I say it earth shattering.

But like others have mentioned Phil on behalf of Apple makes the delusional comment that it is unmatched today.

Apple appears to be doing a lot of copying (which is a good thing). Larger screen, swipe screen to show notification pane, waterproofing...

I had a Treo 750 which was a great Windows Mobile phone at it's time, then went to the 3GS as my first iPhone.
