So it seems like we can abandon any hopes for at least 32 GB baseline storage for the 6s generation. Sigh.

1) What did you expect him to say? "We're going to bump the storage in the next generation. We like to let our customers know these things four months in advance so they rush out to buy the unsold inventory this summer."
2) I don't disagree with him. For many people, 16GB is enough. If all you do is use an iPhone for calls, mail, web browsing, purchases and music streaming, you don't need more than 16GB. The only reason my dad comes close to going over is apps for the grandkids to play. My mom went over because of the same reason plus she is bad at syncing her phone with a computer and thus removing all 15,000 pictures she took of that one baseball game. That was part of my reasoning behind giving her my 32GB 5s and getting a 64GB 6 for me.

I only bought the baseline storage model once because I thought it would be a swell way to save $100. That was dumb, and when people ask me how much they need I find out if they're the very basic user or if they need to drop the extra $100 for more storage. I almost always tell them more because they'll mention photos.

3) They bumped storage in all the other models last year. If people want more storage, they can do it. And the reasoning of using extra money in your production budget for a better camera or maybe adding RAM or NFC is quite on point. They just sold a bazillion iPhones with the iPhone 6 launch, so it's not like it's a MAJOR hurt on sales.

The "price-conscious customer" wouldn't be buying an iPhone for a start.

As for all the cloud stuff, like others have said - streaming all that data isn't always a good option depending on plan and also isn't always possible depending on location. Here's hoping that Apple have a master plan to offer their own networks with unlimited data for everyone...

Except iCloud still stores your photos on the device even though you deleted all of them, they reappear and take up all your storage :-(

I quite agree with Phil on local storage vs iCloud and indeed in fact ALL of my media resides on it, except for one thing that doesn't: game file save data.

If Apple were to create an elegant backup solution and allow users to selectively save third-party app data to iCloud separate to that of the iCloud backup, I will happily downgrade my next iPhone model to 16GB.

So they were willing to foot the bill to raise the base iPhone storage from 4gb to 8gb and 8gb to 16gb, but doubling it once more is out of the question so they can apply the savings to other parts? And lets not forget how online services continue to be Apple's achilles heel...

I don't understand how posters like yourself seem so content on getting shafted by companies. You can still buy their products yet speak up against the BS rhetoric that they use to justify their stupendous profit margins.

Besides, if it wasn't for competition/large sales from other phones it's likely we'd not have larger screens for a few more generations, or anywhere near the software developments on iOS. A world ran by Apple would be very bleak indeed.

I love Apple, but his 16GB defense is complete bull and he knows it. It costs Apple maybe $5 more to upgrade to 32 GB?

I own a 128 GB iPhone 6 and before that I had a 64 GB iPhone 4S, and the $200 high-capacity device tax is ridiculous. It should be $200 for 32 GB, $250 for 64GB, and $300 for 128 GB at most.

I don't quite get Gruber's success. While I think he's a smart guy with interesting analysis sometimes, he also can be really arrogant and he seems completely unwilling to criticize Apple. He's hardly objective. And Daring Fireball isn't updated even once a day on average, and when it is it's usually just a link with a couple sentences of commentary. Longer form pieces are rare. He's...fine...but I think there are better and harder working bloggers and I'm not sure why he has the status he does.

In regards to battery. Yeah thicker phone harder to handle. But with iOS effiency, they could advertise far superior battery life. Not saying original iPhone thickness for the 6/6+. But if kept iPhone 5 thickness, 2 day of heavy usage with a week of standby if minimal usage.

I agree with him completely about the macbook. If you don't like it, buy the macbook pro.

I agree, I just assumed that if they were going to have only one port, wireless charging would be included....

He even says a future where you "don't plug things" into your laptop. I assume as phones (Android devices) have started to move into wireless charging, Apple would play catch up (leap frog actually) and come come out with an awesome wireless solution.

meh... next year

"Save money on higher-quality internals, such as the camera"... The margins are already ridiculously high, and the cost of flash storage from 16GB to 32GB is very minuscule in comparison. Stop being greedy.
I am trying not to be greedy -- Step 1: I won't demand that Apple give me more memory for the same or less money.

Apple is being greedy. 32gb should be standard on all base models. Seriously they make large profits and jumping the storage is going to be a minimal impact. The thing is they want to make sure people always go to that $100 more to get the next model that has an acceptable storage so they can even make more profit.

Try again Phil.

Being greedy is what any publicly owned company has to be. If Apple leadership wasn't making greedy decisions the shareholders would kick them out.

Apple's insane profit margins are this way for that very reason. Apple is in the business of making money for their shareholders. Nothing else matters.

[...] Schiller also said that using 16 GB storage for lower-end models allows Apple to save money for use on higher-end components in other parts of the device, like the camera.[...]
LOL ... this is the biggest load of horse crap I've ever heard. This is just Greed 101. Don't need to make excuses for it. I understand they're in the business of making money, but this isn't the reason for having **** storage on a phone in 2015. The problem isn't cloud storage, Phil, it's that apps eat up a ton of storage space on the phone. Apps don't get stored in the cloud. Apps are getting bigger all the time. I have some apps that are 2 GB. People shouldn't have to delete apps to make room for other apps. 16 GB simply is not enough space these days. It's as simple as that.

Why doesn't anyone ever ask about the storage space that apps take up? It's not documents that are the main issue.

Also, telling everyone to just store things in the cloud is absurd. That data still needs to be accessed and not everyone is on a great data plan in order to freely access that data without worrying about going over. Sure, they can access the data on at home WiFi but even that is limited for some people. I'm fortunate to have unlimited data, but I feel for those that don't.

Stop being ****s, Apple.

I have a 16G iPhone and have been buying them ever since the cloud became usable. My photos and music are on the cloud or my NAS. The 'concerns' are only concerns so the media has something to talk about. They mean nothing in the real world. If you change the way you work you can save some money when buying technology. I for one like 16G options.

Nearly every 'concern' in the past has proved to be anything but. Some examples are Lightning connector on iPhone, when Apple dropped ports and changed memory card style on Macbook Pro back sometime ago. And the list just goes on and on. And guess what, they meant NADA, NOTHING, ZILCH. Apple has just continued to sell. It makes NO DIFFERENCE. It just another crappy story to try and create some drama and give the writers viewpoint on how he would do things. All I can say is, thank god he is just a writer, because if he was making decisions maybe it might not have gone as well for them :)

The best media rubbish is speculation on what will happen at WWDC and what actually happens. Coming a close second to that is iPhone concepts of what future models of iPhone may look like. They never do, and never will. Waste of space and words. Fillers for lack of real stories and to keep some schmuck employed :)

What a crock, I'm sure 16GB minimum capacity has been such since the iPhone 4S. Flash storage has plummeted in price since then and it's likely Apple pay next-to-nothing for it. Furthermore the 16GB model makes the 64GB model look like a comparatively 'great' deal, like you're getting more for your money - it's all subtle marketing and mind games.

Let's not even mention the 8GB models ...
Nope :( since the iPhone 3GS
INSANEEEE

#1 Priority should be battery. Being the thinnest by millimeters should be absolutely irrelevant in 2015. His ******** excuse that it takes longer to charge is insane. 99.9% of people charge their phones overnight and batteries need to be able to last all day in 2015. A dead phone is bad for everyone.

32gb should be standard.

I now hate him bc of his dellusional responses. Lolol

Except the 16GB is the same since 3GS
