iPhone 5C is a terrible name. We're heading back to the bad old days where there were far too many stupid product variants and gibberish model numbers. This should simply be called "iPhone".

So many ridiculous and immature responses here. I assume there must be a lot of high school kids on this site that have yet to learn anything about basic economics or business, and probably judge people's socioeconomic status or personal worth over whether their phone is metal or plastic. Hilarious.

This is the real deal, get over it. These are likely legit photos, and they make total 100% rational sense.

An iPhone made of plastic or poly-carbonate, in various colors, at a lower price point when compared to the current iPhone 5/5S makes complete and total sense both 1) economically, 2) strategically, and 3)business-wise.

The iPhone 3G and 3GS were made of poly-carbonate/plastic, and they sold extremely well for years until the introduction of the iPhone 4 and 5. Absolutely nobody complained about those devices being "cheap" or "crap" or how Apple was descending into "cheapness". People loved them.

Totally absurd comments on here, and I find it amazingly naive how people just don't see things rationally, especially from Apple's point of view.

Seriously, over 50% of you need to enroll in a basic college course on economics.

Let me guess, "Tim Cook and Co. are doing something wrong? They've lost their minds -- a plastic iPhone! Oh my god! Cheap!"

Grow up kiddies. These are going to sell very well and I expect a price point of around $400 off contract.

And one more thing: the general consumer, which accounts for 99.5% of all people, doesn't care whether something is metal or plastic. They view things two ways:

1) Price
2) What they get for the price/Appearance/Quality

A $650 iPhone 5 is a large sum of money for most people, if not 99.5% of consumers. In developing countries or countries with lower per-capita GDP, these are extreme luxury goods and out of reach.

A $400ish iPhone, in multiple colors, is a fair price for many people, and a large percentage of average consumers will pay within this price range for an iPhone.

Anyways, I'm amazed at the fools on this site who lack basic economic-thinking skills. Jesus.

Yes, we're childish. That said, I don't know about the price. I think Apple missed the psychological effect of pricing the iPad mini under $300 (I know, I know, what about taxes). Apple may bump the price to $429 just to maintain their margins.

Those shells are not for apple. Any plastic part were cosmetic appearance plays a role can not be tumbled together like that. They will scratch and apple would certainly not accept them.

they could be rejects that didn't make it through QC.

The C could be (amongst other things) for Camera. This makes sense on a cheaper low-cost iPhone, where purchasers on a budget need to consider how good the camera is in their phone. I would imagine many people needing to buy a cheaper smartphone don't have the money to spend on a dedicated point and shoot as well, let alone a DSLR etc.

Also, if it's cheaper, maybe the expected thinness won't be so important, allowing more camera tech in easily.

Maybe those are rear shells, and it comes with a massive battery, so you never have to charge it!

Fake.
Apple plastic packaging delivered to stores always comes with an extra protective plastic sheet around it to prevent it from scratching.

C=Cube. A rubic's cubic phone with a display on each side, each one being able to run an app.

Seems a little odd that Apple would have a bunch of plastic cases just lying around in a bin, especially when no new phones will ship until probably late September/early October.

Perhaps it's a scrap bin of bad moldings, being stored out the back in an unsecured area. I worn in manufacturing and bad parts are generally just thrown into a container before they are removed to disposal.

bad molding marks, printing bad, badly scratched etc etc

We could simply be looking at a reject pile

As stated on almost every page preceding this one....

I don't care what they call the next release of the iPhone duet ...

Just give me:
larger than 4-4.2" screen size please, pretty please.
802.11c dualband with iOS7 ability for end user to specific single/dual-band and which to use 801.11b/g/n/a/c - please.
NFC - would be a nice to have for transit secure mobile payments (Toronto GO transit is piloting, I don't care about buying coffee or donuts at Timmies, aka Tim Hortons).

That is all.

Why should we take for granted this is the box of the cheaper model? To me this is not the case. The plastic iPhone that should be released in September would still be in its first generation (that 5 - indicating the progress of the different gens of the iPhone - would not make sense then). Perhaps these images can be a confirmation of some rumors circulating a few days ago; next-generation iPhone's killer app will not be its peed (as it happened in the past) but it probably be something related to the [C]amera.

I'm pretty sure the newest Apple products are rolling off the production lines at least 4 months before they're officially announced and unleashed upon the public. It's the reason why Apple is able to offer them up for sale the moment after their unveiling speech ends.

If that picture is actually what the plastic backed iPhone is gonna ship in, then what you're looking at is them stockpiling up for that first big post announcement rush.
