This is kind of cheating, since it isn't a new shot but just an edited version of a shot I posted the other day. Normally I wouldn't do this, but I've been very unhappy with the previous version I posted. To make up for this breach of etiquette I'll include the story behind the shot:

Our cats have been sick lately with some nasty little virus that only affects cats. Usually the cats sleep at our feet--which bugs my wife as she always wanted a cat to cuddle with her. When Zoe got sick she actually started sleeping closer to the head of the bed up against my wife. Which brought untold joy to my wife. Can't really describe how happy this made her (taking into account her sadness that the cats were feeling miserable).

The previous post captured this little story--but wasn't a good image. There was too much tension in the photo which was brought out by how I framed the image. I wanted the focus to be on the cat while still showing the closeness between her and my wife. But in the process created two subjects, one of which was cut off in the upper right corner. I think the half-face of my wife in the corner--which is out of focus but not completely out of focus--was unbalancing. Her hand coming into the foreground was also distracting, as was the blanket on the left of the cat. I did some tweaking to try to focus the image on what I felt was important and to take away some of the distracting elements. I think I achieved a (happier) medium. Here is the result:

Again, sorry for the double post. This is closer to what I was hoping to achieve with the original image though. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

I stopped posting on MacRumors because of all the opinion bashing found in the news articles, but that's a whole nother can of worms.

It would be unusual to see any bashing or arguments on this forum. The point here is to share and be open to constructive criticism. If someone doesn't like one of your pics and says so, it is normally done with the understanding of betterment or expressing an alternative interpretation without the intent of insult. Over all this is a great forum.

Some quick PhotoShop on the middle one.

Dale

Thanks Dale and thanks and. I cranked the WB bar to the right and got these results on the other two photos:

I may try to get out there tomorrow for some more exposures this time with some great advice from friends and a reminder to calm down and take my time!:) If I do, I'll share some more photos. This herd is known as the Lost Trail herd from the area they normally reside. The herd has been infected with tularemia, an infection that leads to pneumonia and eventually death. So the herd is shrinking in size and may be doomed to extinction. This is extremely sad for those of us in this area.

Gah, after finding out that when I import RAW files into LR3, Adobe applies its own default settings. So far I have found no way to turn this off. In the meanwhile, I'm reverting to Canon's DPP, which seems to keep pics the way you took them.

 Awesome... amazing how the snow/ice on the sign is so polarized to the right... it would seem the wind conditions are pretty consistent up there! Where is this?

Thanks, VirtualRain. It's in the Alps, between two villages of Velika Planina, Slovenia. The west wind blows pretty consistently in that location, causing those ragged, jutting layers to build up on one side of all trees and structures in the area. Snow built up on me too, but mostly because the wind was knocking me down into it. I discovered that schlepping a big pack of gear and a tripod through knee-deep snow is a little more challenging than my romps through Greek archaeological parks.

No need to apologize for using the thread to improve your photos. Lots of people post a reprocessed photo after getting feedback here. In your case, you just happen to have gotten that feedback from yourself. ;)

Yes, people in this thread are particularly well behaved. However, the gear threads can get ugly at times, and threads on socio-political topics have been known to attract folks of the wrong sort. :( Fortunately, the PotD thread is something of a safe haven, so long as you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism on occasion.

All of these are awesome. Phrasikleia, your images are almost mystical at times. Some day, I may reach the levels of these photos!

Thanks, fcortese. You're definitely in the right place to improve your photography. I learned a lot by reading and posting here. :)

The setting you're looking for is in the "Import" module. Under "Apply During Import", the option for "Develop Settings" should be set to "None."

And for today, another shot from Sunday...

I think your second shot is stronger - your editing has achieved what you were after, so good job. Hope your cat is feeling better - she looks very very similar to one of my own!

All those snow photos are pretty but I think I'll stick with summer here in Sydney. :)

I was just going to say...
I look at all these excellent snow shots wishing I were there...
I think I could just strip into board shorts and dive into that beautiful scene Phrasikleia, escape this humidity :p

Great photos by the way otter. :)

When I took this picture, I noticed after the fact that the camera set the focal point on the tree and not the cat. I adjusted the focal point to the cat and took a few more. When I loaded them up on the computer, I discovered that the camera knew what it was doing better than I did. I ended up liking this version much more than the cat in focus. Also, this was the only one where his foot is stretched out.

Anyway, this is classic Clyde in the winter. He takes ownership of a heating vent, and it is usually this one under the tree.

Playing with a lighter

Me and my friend also use the long exposure times for multiple actions in one shot...

I like this one! I especially like how the flame is the first one, rather than being at the end like a traditional story. It also seems to draw on early photography, like that of Muybridge, where he was trying to catch the in-between moments not available to the eye. Very cool!

^^^ It's not my photo, but you really should ask first. It's copyrighted work.

It's just a desktop to you, but the author might not want folks using it without permission.

Just say'n.

Dale

OK, it's not on my desktop for the day. I was just joking. :)

Seriously, I change my desktop at least once a day. Not trying to steal anyone's work.
