I apologize for adding such a depressing, contrasting picture to all the beautiful landscapes that have been here lately, but that's the picture I have.

Just my opinion, but you have absolutely nothing to apologize for. One of the greatest powers of the camera is to capture the story of life around us - and this photograph does just that. It is frank, uncompromisingly honest, and to my eye neither patronizing nor editorializing.

The photo is incredibly sharp - what lens were you using?

I had the Canon "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8 (though I set to f/2.8) on for my pictures because of the low light. I had to use the flash for this one because it was just too dark without it. 1/15s at f/2.8 handheld was not going to be nearly as sharp. :)

Really stand out stuff !

I've been a long-time lurker here and there's really been some top notch efforts both in contribution as well as critique. Much better than some of the other sites out there. Nice work.

I see lots of people commented on this one. Am I missing something here? All I see is a "This photo is currently unavailable ... flickr" image.
It has only been 7 hours since this photo has been posted, you might want to leave it up for a bit longer than that.

Apologies gnd - I certainly haven't removed it, and can see the photo here in the post, and the replies, just fine. I even see it in your reply, in "TIMG" format. Not sure what the prob is

Oh, how nice. :) That dog has the completely happy, not a care in the world look. :)

Lots of character here. I'm a real sucker for animals, and he (?) is one friendly looking dog.

BTW... AxisOfBeagles... Loving this shot!

Thanks to all. Yes, it's a "he" ... having a puppy around the house tends to dominate one's attention with the camera.

My church hosts an overnight shelter when the temperatures drop below freezing. Tonight we had a special dinner and a movie night for the guests. Here's a shot of one of our guests.

I love photos like this! Very cool.

Here's mine from a party on Saturday night/Sunday morning. This must have been around 5 am, when things started to get a bit nutty. I like how relaxed she seems. It's not as sharp as I would have liked it because, save for the one dim-ish purple fluorescent light in the corner, the room was dark and the AF had trouble locking in. I had to kind of guess manually.

No idea, I don't see the photo from home nor from work. Must be some regional flickr thing or something.

Lots of good pictures over the last few days. These are only a few of them.

Bee gathering nectar from a Gazania flower.

I love this one, the colouring and pattern are striking.

Beautiful. That small figure gives something to focus the eye on and also gives scale making the rest of the scene seem more vast

Mushroom Rock at Bathsheba, Barbados

The rock on the right looks like a huge brown bear or something bending down for a sniff to see if the mushroom rock's edible!

Strange, I can't see it either. I'm wondering what I'm missing now!

What a wonderful face! You've captured it really well. Definitely a candidate for the B&W treatment you've given it.

This is nice. The sunlight and the golden mountains draw the eye into the picture and the pink blossom of the bushes with the light shining through gives interest to the foreground. Might it look better with that bit of pink bush on the right cropped out? Don't know, it looks good anyway!

One from a while back:

The original has a lot more detail in the trunk of the palm tree than the small version here.

I actually like the soft focus of the image. It works for mood of the setting well.

a little downhill skateboarding

Snapped this picture of my friend while we were riding down one of our lovely mountain highways this fall. Held my D5000 in my hand while letting it focus and take a picture automatically every few seconds. I tried my best to point and let the camera shoot while I focused on skating and staying steady. Shots were taken between 45-50mph.

I turned it into a background and added the logo for my site which is all about longboarding down hills in Montana.

To use a slightly off-kilter phrase, long time follower very erratic poster. The stuff TheReef has been putting up made me go back to my New Zealand photos. All taken on bus-stops betwixt places whilst I was there a couple of years ago, moving out there in August so hopefully have more time for photos (and I've learned a lot since then)....Anyway a cloudy day at Lake Tekapo whilst en route to Queenstown, not the best light but still an incredible place.

Valentine's Day deserves a flowers picture. It was rather timely for my crocus flowers to bloom just in time.

First Post

Hello everyone, brand new at this. Just came back from Vegas and thought I'd post a pic.

Very nice back-lit photo. I usually go for more prominent subjects, but that's just me. I'm really appreciating the ambiance in this one, with the leaves taking some of the power out of the sun and producing a little starburst from it, and with the back-lit bushes adding some pink blush to the foreground. This shot has a lot of depth. I like depth. :)

Wonderful pic, I love the setting, mountains and lit pink foliage in the foreground, framed partly by the overhanging silhouetted tree branch.
I feel like I could pull up a chair there and down an ice cold beverage... (it's summer down here ;))

Thanks for the constructive compliments! I do like that the pic evoked a particular mood for you since that's what I was aiming for. I tiptoed a bit to hide the sun behind the leaves because I wanted its light but not necessarily its physical presence.

Below is a shot taken with a B+W CPL so it's very contrasty. I was thinking of toning it down, but then I thought "Nah, let's kick this up a notch".

The weather had been uncooperative lately, so not getting out to create new images. Looking forward to spring:)
I have been working on a long term scanning project, old family photos, etc., here is one of the slides I always loved, from the summer of 1981.

Need some help identifying this guy. Downy or Hairy Woodpecker? I want it to be a Hairy but I'm leaning more towards it being a Downy as it does have a shorter bill.

The photo I really wanted to post didn't turn out but it was more of a test shot so I'll do it again. The other I wanted to post flew away. It was a massive owl but Ive never seen one like this before. Couldn't see it clearly as it was kind of far but I could tell it had a flat oval face, grey with what seemed to be white markings and about 17-20 inches tall from the very bottom to the top of his head.

That's quite special. :) Love the colours and mood.

Here is a photo I took the other night: (Hope you can see it properly)
