Bee gathering nectar from a Gazania flower.

It's really nice to see such a very commonly attempted subject turn out so beautifully. It goes to show that a really well executed photo can rise above whatever ordinary content it may represent.

Here's a crappy photo of mine...

You're being too hard on yourself. This is a much better use of HDR than your last one. Using it to achieve an 'enchanted forest' effect tends to work out pretty well.

The island to the horizon is probably Anacapa 15 miles away, and on the top far-right of the pic is one of (in)famous oil rigs of Santa Barbara.

Camera Canon EOS REBEL T2i
Exposure 0.02 sec (1/50)
Aperture f/5.6
Focal Length 35 mm
ISO Speed 100
Exposure Bias +2/3 EV

The figure with lots of 'psychological' space in front of him works well as an anchor in this sunset shot. Lovely scene. I might crop it somewhat to give the figure a bit more 'presence' in the frame, but that's just a niggle.

Great shots over these last few pages a few have stood out to me from cosmokanga2, macrumormonger, otter, VirtualRain, Coheebuzz and arvo707 great job all!

I'm not sure this really counts as HDR since I didn't combine exposures like HDR software usually does. I manually layered in the lower exposure lights over the higher exposure instead. The automated process in Photoshop Elements just didn't look right.

I appreciate the comments from the best of the crew here. I must say it's been a good month so far for pictures, and it looks like there's a lot less snow in the pics. Is Spring coming?

I'd think if I took this pic with a point and shoot, there would've been crazy banding in the sky. If I had a telephoto lens, the smoky mountain background would've probably looked stunning.

Crank that f-stop higher and I think you'd like the picture a bit more. f/11 maybe? Not sure what lens you are using. Experiment with smaller apertures when doing landscapes that vast.

I still like it though :D

The scene you're seeing is actually quiet dark, I had to brighten the scene just to make the foreground appear. And that's already at 4.5! f/11 would've been a night scene. I could've used the Auto Lighting Optimizer, but the effects of that have been too unpredictable to me. So I think I struck a decent compromise that reduces noise and preserve a landscape perspective while keeping as much of the light possible as the sun races toward the horizon. The lens is Zeiss 2/35 Distagon, manual focus, prime. Thanks for your feedback gameface!

Getting ready for the town festival, Montalban, Rizal Provence, Philippines.

I like the way the lines lead into the building face. The lighting in the sky compliments the flags and building well, too. I'm not a fan of what a wide angle does to vertical lines in a shot like this, but that's too much to fix in post. Nice overall.

Overall composition is wonderful. I like all of the variations of line and textures here. I would like to see a little more detail in the rock faces, though. The sky is great!

Mushroom Rock at Bathsheba, Barbados
Lots of potential in this photo. Great framing. The inclusion of the human element on the beach makes for interesting contrast with the harshness of the rocks. The day didn't cooperate with good light, but you were able to pull a nice contribution out of it.

My church hosts an overnight shelter when the temperatures drop below freezing. Tonight we had a special dinner and a movie night for the guests. Here's a shot of one of our guests.

I apologize for adding such a depressing, contrasting picture to all the beautiful landscapes that have been here lately, but that's the picture I have.

Thanks! That's a pretty awesome shot you've taken too. :) Really nice scenery - that's amazing, great composition.

macrumormonger: Great landscape - like it quite a lot, and a reasonable compromise given what you've stated. I'm unfamiliar with the T2i, so I have no idea how you'd go cranking the ISO with that camera to allow smaller aperture (for greater depth of field).

Oh, how nice. :) That dog has the completely happy, not a care in the world look. :)

I have quite a lot more photos to select from - but not much time to process them. ;)

But until then, this was the newsworthy photo I mentioned earlier:

Click to view larger size - the site seems to be down at the moment, so if it doesn't load - give it time. This is the new freight airline of Qantas, and its first new plane - the former JA603F of ANA Cargo. If those water puddles had been larger/more complete, I'd have been able to do the mirror effect of the plane on the ground. Never managed that yet. ;)

Terrific composition, great light, and a wonderful contrast/combination of textures and elements. This landscape really packs a lot into one frame.

Very nice back-lit photo. I usually go for more prominent subjects, but that's just me. I'm really appreciating the ambiance in this one, with the leaves taking some of the power out of the sun and producing a little starburst from it, and with the back-lit bushes adding some pink blush to the foreground. This shot has a lot of depth. I like depth. :)

Lots of character here. I'm a real sucker for animals, and he (?) is one friendly looking dog.

Thanks Dale. I went back and forth on whether to post this photo. As you point out, the lighting is about the worst possible. And unfortunately, on vacation, you don't always have the flexibility to stick around for more optimal lighting. However, I thought the subjects and composition made it potentially interesting enough to share it, so I'm glad you commented on it. :)

BTW... AxisOfBeagles... Loving this shot!

Just my opinion, but you have absolutely nothing to apologize for. One of the greatest powers of the camera is to capture the story of life around us - and this photograph does just that. It is frank, uncompromisingly honest, and to my eye neither patronizing nor editorializing.

The photo is incredibly sharp - what lens were you using?

You guys have wicked photos. I'm always super jealous. I guess I'll just stick to my backyard bird watching...

I was able to snap about five photos of this guy before he flew away. He comes and goes so quick. I'm fairly happy I got a decent one.

I see lots of people commented on this one. Am I missing something here? All I see is a "This photo is currently unavailable ... flickr" image.
It has only been 7 hours since this photo has been posted, you might want to leave it up for a bit longer than that.

Strange... It's showing up fine for me.

Wonderful pic, I love the setting, mountains and lit pink foliage in the foreground, framed partly by the overhanging silhouetted tree branch.
I feel like I could pull up a chair there and down an ice cold beverage... (it's summer down here ;))

Thanks for the comments :) I might try brining out some more detail in that rock, Dale.
