I have another shot where I really painted the trees in the foreground, but come to find out they were OOF. So I opted for this one. The first shot i took that night though the foreground was just a silhouette, its on my Flickr, but again I prefer this one.

Edit: Checked out your Flickr... How funny mine were taken for a class assignment as well.

Been a few days since my last post... many incredible ones since then.

Mine for today:

EXIF Summary: 1/400s f/9.0 ISO200 190mm (35mm eq:285mm)

A VERY camera shy mallard at Lake Livingston State Park, Texas.

I'm really enjoying the exercises in off-camera lighting you've been doing, but something still brings me back to the simple, naturally lit scenics in the end. Where was this one taken? Looks like it might be a candidate for black and white treatment as well.

Thanks, pdxflint. I'm glad you're enjoying both types, including that "simple scenic," which I took using nothing more fancy than a CPL filter. Didn't even use a tripod there. That location is the Calico ghost town in California. Yes, it would probably work fine as a B&W, but I tend not to dump color from an image unless the color is rather weak to begin with or if it's in some way distracting. I might also go with B&W if I'm aiming for a "timeless" or vintage feel, but I think the old miner's shack, completely intact and looking very lived-in, is much more fun as a wacky modern reality.

Celebration of Light in Vancouver - USA

The Celebration of Light fireworks show took place in English Bay in Vancouver BC on Wednesday July 21, 2010. Part of four shows over the course of two weeks that display competing entries by four countries, the Celebration of Light is viewed by some 1000 boaters and hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the shores around Vancouver. The July 21 display was sponsored by The Keg Steakhouse and Bar, put on by Rozzi Inc. dab Rozzies Famous Fireworks and featured the USA with the theme of "In the Mood", a tribute to the Big Band era.

WOW! What did you use for that pic?

I agree about that portrait. It wasn't the greatest but I loved the pose. : ) Anyways I humbly submit a better piece today for your viewing.. enjoyment :D

To actually take the photo seriously, it's a great photo, but whatever that is on the top right seems to be quite distracting. I know it's not even close to the centre, but it's the break in the line of grass that makes it stick out.

Is this one a bit better? No distracting or line breaks. Just green grass and... yep! :D Tomorrow I will post some flowers and get off the pinup kick :D. Thanks for the useful critiques!

Jason Beck Yeah that's a much nicer shot, I wasn't meaning to be picky, it just bugged me that it was there :p Haha 'pinup kick' it was nice while it lasted.

Okay cool. Yah I really like what you just submitted. Internet sucks at the studio and I have to reload the page a lot to get it to load fully. Leeching off a coffeehouse's wifi 2 floors down and next door. I did load it and was greeted with the nice ocean shot and sailboat. It's got some vivid colors and the vignette looks rad on it!

Ahhh cheers man, I'm really digging bright vivid colours at the moment. It was a complete throwaway shot, really glad I decided to stick it out and do a little work on it to make it look nice.

Thanks! Was running on caffeine and no sleep. Was wondering what mistakes I'd discover this morning. :)

Nikon D80 with 70-200 2.8 which turn into a 150-300 with the crop factor. Tripod mounted from a distance of 3.7km.

What kind of exposure settings? I'd like to give that kind of shot a shot next time. :)
