^^Welcome. Nice to see that we are adding another woman to the roster. Very nice capture of expression. The background is a bit bright and detracts a bit from the photo. That's hard to manage without losing the detail in the face for a portrait. Maybe if you cropped a bit off from the top it would improve it. Overall, a nice first post.

Dale

Thanks, Dale, for the welcome and C&C :).

I know that the background is way too bright. I did think about adjusting the brightness, but then the face would be too dark (at least with my editing skills). We were inside this cafe (well, it had no walls so in fact we were just underneath a roof), so I guess having the lighting balanced (at least for a non-professional) is challenging. Cropping also crossed my mind, but if I wanted to constrain the aspect ratio of the photo and crop from the top, it would also result in cropping his arm and I kind of like his "mature" pose, leaning to the table. Vignette made it better, thanks NeGRit0 :).

I had to wake up very early to get this shot, but once I set up the tripod, I forgot all about how sleepy I was. ;)

I just spent about an hour editing this picture I took yesterday, could have gone crazy with editing but I left it at this, pretty close to the original image..Biggest question: to vignette or not to vignette

Rainbow in the Falls

Absolutely love this shot. I've been in LA all week, but unfortunately my netbook doesn't like reading CR2 files, so I have to wait until I get home to post them here!

Also, I my 1D Mark II comes in tomorrow.. I can't wait! :D

NeGRit0: I like the shot. I have a friend like that, well with BMX instead, when we were in HS he was sponsored, and toured nationally... he is like Tony Hawk, ageless... he is still incredible on a BMX bike. Possibly a circular polarizer to help the sky? I do not know for sure, I am still researching and reading about filters...

Mine for today...

Backyard fireworks from the Fourth of July.

Chef Jay

Thanks Chef! Ah yes, filters... They are on the list, but first I'm getting some extension tubes. Hooray for cheap 'macro'! I need to look into thoseI dig the shot, but was it taken towards the end of the show? Seems a little hazy, likely from lingering smoke.

Bamboo

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

I dont get to travel much, but that park is one of the most awesome places i have ever been. My last trip I spent over 4 hours wandering the Tea Garden!

Please, one photo per day... Thread rules. :) Also, i would like to know anything you can tell me about what's going on in this photo, I'm very intrigued!

Vignette made it better, thanks NeGRit0 :).

Anytime. I personally hate to crop photos, although now that i have CS5 and the crop tool has a rule of thirds overlay it seems much easier to keep the balance. :)

Mine for today. Random bar downtown...

These are really good. The top one has some cool emotion to it. I like these style of candid/impromptu street/public pictures. Especially in Asian cultures. I think... the top one is my favorite. That dude's expression is pretty cool. haha! Post more tomorrow!

thanks :)

haha i forgot. slipped my mind. as for what's going on, this was at a temple in Asakusa in Japan. it was burning of incense and they would fan smoke to themselves as they believed it had healing powers.

This picture was taken just behind the Tea Garden! Hahaha yes it truly is the greatest park ever made. My friends and I have tried to go there every day this summer. So far so good. :)

Here's another from G.G. Park

This is a great, well focused shot. You did well on the tricky exposure too, given the colours on the duck and the water, etc. My only suggestion would be to shift your subject up the frame, which would give a nice symmetrical reflection of the duck in the water.

Thanks.

I agree but this is full frame as shot with the 400mm f5.6L... I will keep the reflection in mind when shooting. I have done this before but I guess in shooting so close I just did not have that in mind. Here is one with the reflection I shot some time ago. Exposure on the Coot is also fun with the deep black feathers.

Wind & Grass

Family trip to a place called Hod hill, an old iron age/roman hill fort. Lot's of rare flowers and butterflys, very dull and windy day, wanted to capture the days feel in one shot. Grain was intended.

^^ Welcome. That's actually a nice photo for a P&S. Exposure is always to get right with those little things. Your framing and choice of subject is nice. Show us more of your work.

Let's see.
No Smoking, check.
No Littering, check.
No Touching People?

Where to begin. So many awesome photos today! Phrasikleia and Doylem, those shots are simply stunning. NevadaJack, I really like the duck picture. Is there some kind of stigma against ducks here? I have posted a few, and I really love ducks and will be posting more soon, unless the consensus is not to...

Maxximillian: the intensity in that shot is great, he looks like he is ready to go play with James and company in Miami!

NeGRit0: Yes it was towards the end of the night, there was almost no wind, so the smoke was shrouding everything. We also had been bbqing, so the pit was smoking the whole night, adding to it. Next year I think I am going to try to choreograph the fireworks better. This one was put together at the last minute when my GF went to the fireworks stand to get some, and ended up coming back with way more than we needed, and ran into another friend that had just bought a big box too... we really had more fireworks than needed, but hey, we all had a blast!

Here is another from that night, earlier, and less smoke :)

I'm actually drawn to the busy skyline around the turret as I scan the panorama to look for interesting details. You did a good job with the leading line of the roof ridge. Once you follow the ridge to the turret, the immediate surrounding grabs you as well. Did you know there's what looks like a clipper ship all the way in the back? They'd be lost with vignetting.

UCSB Lagoon. It was my lifelong dream to visit all of the UC campuses. UCSB was the last one I visited, though it was one of the closest to LA. Then I was told they built a new one somewhere in B.F.E. boonies in Merced. I was like "LOL! The state is broke, they'll close it down".

Seems like we've been to the same place, cchart! :) I have not cropped the photo, although I did crop the poor man's head off when taking the photo. Actually, it wasn't until after a year of staring at this photo on my desktop did I notice the headless guy behind the girl and I got cold shivers. I had to go back to check the other photos from Asakusa to see if he indeed had a head and a friendly one. I was relieved to find out that the girl, grandma and headless man were in the same happy group. As for Asakusa, cchart said all that I know of the place.asakusa.jpg
