Scanology ?

Was inspired to try something I saw in PhotoLife magazine: http://www.photolife.com/currentIssue.php This month's issue included a piece by Janet Dwyer: http://www.janetdwyer.com/ She has done a lot of photographic work using a flatbed scanner. So, I read the piece and went out to the back forty and found some "subjects". This was my first and only attempt:

I thought this was pretty cool. But like Janet says in her piece, a spot removal tool will be your best friend! In my case, the blue monkshood, to the right as you look at the capture, was full of tiny ants, so I had to spend a bit of time cleaning up... but I thought this was so cool. I did this using an Epson V600... scanned as a Jpeg. Should have selected TIFF. I'll do this again with flowers that are fresher and free-ish of bugs. Janet won 2007 Pilsner Urquell International Photography Award for her work. Check out her link.

Looks like you won't have to worry about the "dislike button" anymore, seems to be gone. My opinion, if you are asking someone to "vote" you should have more than one choice, either or so to speak. Now, you get to vote "yes" or none at all. Are we being too politically correct here with only one choice in the positive? My view is that either you should have both "up/down" arrows or none at all. Ok, let the flames begin;)

Duh  I just noticed only the up arrow. I agree with you. Either both or none at all, or if a vote in the negative then an automatic reply window pops up and some constructive advice/criticism must be given for the negative vote to be counted. But those who make these choices, or have to program for that to happen, are way above my pay grade.

It's been a while since I've been around here. I finally got my camera out again this past weekend, although for a totally new reason. My cousin got married and he asked me to make a video of it. It was a pretty taunting task to take on and I guess I'll see what the end result is before I decide whether it was a success. Thankfully, his expectations were already low, so there isn't too big of a risk. They had professional photographers, but they just wanted a basic video to look back on as well.

Anyway, I did get to take a few stills in between videos. I thought this one was funny. These squares were out for guests to write stuff on and then afterward they will all be sewn together to make a quilt. The best man was the groom's twin brother. He figured he would have fun with his square :D

The "down" arrows are gone from MR, but the "dislike" button is still there on 500px. They just changed it from a big, red button to a little, blue link. Apparently it only works (or appears?) for people with a certain "affection" threshold, but I don't know what the exact amount is (I think someone said it's about 175).

my cousins sports day

Nice job of capturing the moment. I'm curious about your choice of B&W, though; it seems to make a joyous moment unnecessarily somber. Was there some distracting color in the original?

I was trying to capture the things below water...used a polarizing filter.

Nikon D7k
Nikkor 18-105 (shot at 18)
f 5.6
Iso 100
Shutter 1/100

I'm relatively new to photography, and would welcome any feedback.

Took a walk around the St. Louis Zoo the other day, experimenting with both UniWB and ETTR at the same time. Being a nooby to both, I definitely took off more than I could chew, and unfortunately some shots that could have been great were ruined because they were way exposed... You can still some of the pink in this shot where I tried to bring the exposure down too much.

Are you using Aperture? The pink issue with UniWB+ETTR is one of the major reasons I switched to LightRoom, problem solved.

My photo for the day. I pulled my roomie aside for less than a minute while he was cooking his dinner. I had my setup planned out and ready to go. I should have gelled the flash though, whoops!

600D handheld with the 50/1.4, ISO 200, 1/80th at f/2.8 in manual mode. The light was a handheld 580EX II with a Strobies/Interfit softbox in E-TTL mode at +2/3rd stop FEC.

Shortly after taking this picture I boxed the flash up and sent it back to its owner. This morning I ordered a LumoPro LP160 and a couple Cactus V5 radio triggers. I chose the LumoPro because I spent most of my time with the 580 in manual mode. I figure if I need E-TTL I can pop on my 420 and call it good.

I bought a LumoPro 160 and some Cactus triggers but had problems with the Cactus misfiring often enough to frustrate me. Hope you don't run into the same problem:( But your reasoning is sound and frugal and the LumoPro is a nice unit. I eventually bought some Pocket Wizards and a refurb 580 EXII and will use the LumoPro as a second flash. Good luck. I enjoyed watching you explore and expand your flash photography.

Here's mine for today. An afternoon storm front moving in on the Museum of Mining here in Butte:

Yeah I am actually, I'll have to take a look at LR. Does anyone else know of, I don't know, any plugins for Aperture that might solve my issue with the exposure? I guess I'll just have to overexpose less if I wanna stay with the UniWB + ETTR.
