I didn't even have to leave the house to get this shot last night. Shot it from my south balcony. I don't really have the right lens for the job, but that didn't stop me from having a bit of fun. Who could resist photographing a total lunar eclipse on such a clear night?! What an amazing spectacle it was!

WOW!!! I am drooling with envy! I tried to get some moon shots last night, but the trees were blocking the view at midnight ... and still at 3:00 a.m. I made a note of your settings, so I could, perhaps, someday, have the opportunity to attempt to duplicate this fine shot.

Nice use of Rule of Thirds, too! (Although, as I'm typing this, find myself wondering how it would look in the upper right, as opposed to lower left?)

Either way, I love it!

Thanks, Waybo. This was the first time I've ever tried to photograph the moon (aside from landscapes with the moon visible), so I can't say whether or not my settings would be good for anything other than a lunar eclipse (when the moon is a lot darker than usual).

As for the placement of the moon in the frame, yeah, my first instinct was to put it in the upper right corner, but then it looked too ordinary to me. When I framed it in the lower left, it almost looked to me as if I was gazing down on the moon instead of up at it. I liked how the dark side of the moon leads off into this giant expanse of space. I find it so mind boggling that all of these big, glowy balls are floating around out there...can't quite wrap my brain around it!

Google says it's 'The Worsted and Spinning Mill of J Murgatroyd & Son.

True... but the looms stopped clattering some years ago. Now the complex is being converted into apartments.

Really nice exposure on this one. Love the vibrant greens. Doylem I was wondering, what's the widest lens you take for this sorts of pictures and do you do much in post?

Thanks. I shoot nearly everything on the kit (18-70mm) lens on my Nikon D200. Minimal PP: just a little saturation, typically, and contrast.

Same mill, different angle....

I went to the Photo Barn (local photography shop) yesterday to check out their bags on sale for Father's Day. I didn't see anything I really liked, but next door is a classic car parts and restoration shop. In the parking lot they have a bunch of rusted cars and parts. Here's a shot of one the old engines.

From the same set as the picture I posted yesterday. Same girl in fact!

Do you ever find you want to go wider or do you just settle for zooming with your feet?

Burlington Sound of Music Festival

Every year the city I live in puts on a free weekend of music for Father's Day. Luckily, this year I was able to get media access to get closer to the stage. Here's a quick edit from Toronto band Bedouin Soundclash.

My 18-70mm lens is fine for nearly every pic I want to take. My basic kit is a Nikon D200, 18-70, tripod, cable release, grey grad filter and little case with spare batteries and cards. This is what I take with me everywhere.

I have a 70-200 lens, which gets used occasionally, plus a 50 f1.8, which is sharp and fun. But I've nothing wide than 18mm. When I have some cash I may go for a Sigma 10-20, or similar. On the whole, though, I quite enjoy the discipline of working with one camera, one lens. If I carried more gear, I might be tempted to leave the tripod behind, when it's the tripod that really gives me the freedom to get pix in just about any conditions.

Also, as you suggest, we can 'extend' the range, at both ends of a wide-tele zoom, simply by putting one foot in front of the other! :)

How do you get the settings?

Hi, SB123:

I copied the file into Aperture, and studied the metadata there. Before deleting it, I used my Address Book -- (cuz MobileMe syncs it, and thus it's easily found on my laptop, iPad and iPhone) -- and made a note under my Contact = MacRumors:

Phrasikleia's lunar eclipse
Exposure: 1 sec
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 200 mm
ISO Speed: 400

I have a few other useful hits there, too ... so when the opportunity hits, I can easily find my notes. Dumb? Perhaps! But ... it works!!! (Does anyone else use something free or almost free, that works as well or better?)

Recognizing that the lunar eclipse could be darker, I have another note that says:
Moon shot:
Exposure: 1/320
Aperture: f/8.0
Focal Length: 300 mm
ISO Speed: 100

I hope this helps, SB123.
