I like it! The simplicity, the almost b/w. Effective. The inclusion of the people in the background makes it 'real', not posed.

Gotta disagree. I find the people distracting. I want to see what's in front of the boy... not what's behind...

I'm doing some pix for the company that operates these wonderful old 'steamers' on Windermere. This is the shot I'm trying to get for the front of their 2011 brochure, but it's not happening. The sun goes behind a cloud, or the skipper sends the boat the wrong way. I only get one shot, at 11am, when the light can be right. I'm determined to get the shot, but this isn't it... :(

I'm guessing some sand? I agree with the other chap, I fine the people in the background add to the image, rather than detract.

Nope, it's certainly not. Guess you'll have to hold out for that Sun.

I am very happy, I found another one of my dream lenses…finally.
One from the first portrait session with it:

I also agree on the people in the background really adding to the shot, brings the story of going to the beach to life :)

You've been posting some really nice shots lately, otter. I really like the mood, composition, and color palette of this one, though it's all getting a bit lost in the dark exposure (nothing on the histogram between 200 and 255, so it's substantially underexposed). I'd recommend stretching out the tonal range of this one, probably with curves, which would give you a very arresting image.

To each his own, I guess, but I think you'd be hard pressed to miss the "story of going to the beach" with or without the background people. Personally, I'd like to see more of the sea, where he's headed, and why he looks so determined to get there.

That is if you see the boy as the subject. I see his image as the framing of the background scene. If the boy was the real subject then he would indeed need more space to the right to walk into. But then I would also like to see details in his face: a determined look of a builder, or the smile of a kid that is going to get real messy in sand and water.
But as you said, to each his/her own.

Here's mine for this week :) This is from a couple weeks ago in my Food Styling class, we didn't shoot this week because we switched with the culinary and we cooked and they photographed haha

Thanks Phrasikleia. I took your advice and adjusted it, although I used Levels instead of Curves. It did look a lot better.

The POTD thread seems a bit quiet this month...

Carp in a desert irrigation pond...

I never realized this pond had fish in it. It is really not that large... but they were put there for some reason. About a foot under the surface.
