Seagulls, in my opinion, aren't given enough praise. Up close they are quite an amazing bird - and I was about 2ft away from it when taking this photo - it's eye just captures my attention.

The hillsides of Butte were once occupied by 20 or more of these mine headframes which lowered "cabs" carrying miners to the various levels below ground to pull copper out of the earth. There are about a dozen remaining and the town has fitted most of them with LED lights. This is the Orphan Girl mine, a subject I shoot often since it is literally outside of my back door. This is a twilight shot from the other night using a FL-W filter and setting WB to tungsten. I took several shots alternating between tungsten and daylight settings. This particular shot was dialed back to tungsten in post.

Nice. It's a shame the LED's were not different colour to increase the contrast between the sky and the orange lights.

These things always look pregnant to me. How the heck did you get to be above it like that? Great vantage point.

The walk out to Western Brook Pond, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland:

I like the way the clouds echo the curve of the path.

A great perspective from here, but what is the gob of stuff in the centre? Rain?

Thanks. Coming from someone who's photos I always admire on this site that's nice to hear.

Unless of course you just think the rest of mine are crap and this one is the only decent one i've posted ;)

Thanks for the laugh! I'm by no means a masterpiece producer, just an overenthusiastic newbie really.

You are very fortunate to have such an outlook from the back door! I'm enjoying you seeing and capturing it in different ways, which in turn gets me thinking about how to show things differently. Thank you fcortese.

Taking a short break from shots of Newfoundland...this is from the air show at the Canadian National Exhibition last weekend.

Technically not a great shot as Toronto is on the north shore of Lake Ontario and the show is over the lake. This presents some challenges shooting into mid afternoon sun.

Lighting issues aside, it's hard not be impressed by the incredible skill demonstrated by the Royal Canadian Air Force's Snowbird team.

Helicopter. The chance became available - so why not. My first time ever in a helicopter too - and the thing had the doors removed from it too. Which is very, very "interesting". I'm not a nervous flyer, but the conditions made me a little concerned. I was well strapped in though, so no chance of me falling out the side of it.

One more from that batch. I didn't have enough reach to get the more distant photos of this MD-11. Also played it very safe with the camera settings. In future, I'd like to try lower shutter speeds and pan the image - but that's a good way of coming away with a heap of blurred, throw away images.

In comparison with the A380, the MD-11 is always beautiful.

Thanks John.

Good job on that photo, especially considering the light.

This was taken at The Joint Forces Air Show at Andrews AFB. I was very fortunate to get this shot. I was standing on a Marine Amphibious Vehicle right under a flag attached to the vehicle and happened to lookup while the bombers were flying overhead. Coupled w/ a small ominous rain cloud to the side; this made for a great pic.

I"m not sure what the town council would say if I asked them to change the LED light colors ;) But sometimes you're just stuck with dealing with what is in front of you.:)

You're welcome, ijohn. Thanks for the nice words.

Thanks! How did you get that angle on the plane? Were you in a plane yourself?

Here is the only photo I took from my cousins wedding at the weekend. Snapped it, looked at the screen, decided I wasn't going to do any better and turned the camera off!

As always, comments appreciated!

Your cousin didn't ask you to be his wedding photographer? He must be mad.

Mine for today. I left it a little late to catch this sunset. Then when I got to my chosen location, some guy was starting a bonfire. Couldn't decide if it would add or detract from the composition, so I'll let you decide.

Comments always welcome.

Found this guy in the backyard today.

My first try at up-close (not quite macro) photography with the kit lens.
Not as sharp or in-focus as I would like, but the raft on which this guy was sitting was bobbing up and down in the pool.
What's the trick to getting tack-sharp photos when things are moving like that? I think the auto-focus was having trouble keeping up.

Love the coloring and layering in this shot. Very nicely done!

Yes, I was in a Robinson R44 helicopter. First time I've ever done that. Worked out okay. I'm already planning a next time.

Unfortunately, it can only be in the afternoon, the usual traffic directions on the parallel runways forbid this in the morning unless you want to be on the wrong side of the runways with the light in front of you (rather than behind you).

Nice wedding photo. :)
