Yeah, the novelty could wear off real fast but then there are times it'll be really useful. For instance, those companies that offer discount with a valid student union card or require some other form of ID. Just hold your card up to the camera and go straight to mail. No mucking around with scanners etc.

Useful for mooning, too! :D

but that would be the cameri not really the App??

I'm hoping they put it in 10.4.3 which is due out very very soon anyway!

HECK NO!

10.4.3 builds have been out some time - there's no way Apple would, as they near completion, simply add Front Row into the code...

Sorry!

As for the PVR. Seems Comcast/Direct TV etc. have this done already. No need to put it in this box as well.

Not everyone has cable or satellite, believe it or not. I don't watch that much TV so can't justify the cost, but when I do watch TV I'd like to be able to record my shows on something better than a VCR. A true "media center" computer should both play and record media. Front Row is an excellent first step and makes the playing part dead simple; not to mention it integrates so well with iLife. But iLife itself has recording/capturing capabilities which Front Row could augment specifically for scheduling recordings from a TV tuner, etc.

I took the comment to mean that hopefully Photo Booth would be n 10.4.3. Being such a simple, single purpose app I think that would make sense. But I also like what others have said, that it should be bundled with the iSight since its only purpose is to work with the iSight. Like Steve said, they wanted something you could do with the iSight right out of the box and Photo Booth was it. Now just take that to the iSight itself and not just the iSight built into the iMac. Makes perfect sense.

Makes sense. If they don't want to give it away just for free, then it could at least be bundled with iSight cameras, and made available to iSight owners.

Maybe they're waiting until they've added a check that makes it iSight-only.

It would be simpler to give it a way for free, but then I'm not an disinterested party :)

Or even as a free download for .Mac users.:)

Yeah it definitely wears off. I think of it as the EyeToy for the Mac. :p I still think it's a very cool app though, and definitely something I didn't really expect to come from Apple. When I think of Apple's software, productivity apps instantly jump to mind, like Final Cut Pro. I would love to see more "fun" apps like Photo Booth from Apple in the future.

I'll probably play with it again tomorrow. :p

Yeah, I guess there is something to be said for "fun" apps like that. Nothing really wrong with that, as long as Apple doesn't spend too much time focusing on them as opposed to their "serious" offerings. ;)

Knowing me, I'd probably waste my time playing around with it all the time and never get anything productive done....

Haha, that would be so true for me too. ;) I get distracted enough as it is...

Yes

i would like to just confirm that photobooth does work on older macs. i have it on my imac now and its the generation that came out with the light senc. I dont have an isight camera, but i have a macally (icecam) and photobooth workes perfectly. camerea is a USB cam

Since the Apple remote control for Front Row is infrared, not Bluetooth... it would seem to me that it's not very likely that Front Row will be released as a stand-alone app - let alone as part of iLife. Perhaps other future Macs will have infrared receivers built in, though (like the new iMac does).

I do wish Apple (or someone else) would come out with a reasonable Bluetooth remote control though, rather than clunky semi-solutions like Salling Clicker.

Im using Photo Boot together with a Mac Mini and a Sony DVR-HC90 videocamera. While the realtime effects on the Mac mini is less than stellar, I must say this app *is* hillarious.

According to early rumors comming in from new iMac owners, Front Row is nowhere to be found as a standalone application on the harddrive.

It is a stand-alone application, but it's in CoreServices and relies on frameworks only available in the 10.4.2-versions coming with the new iMacs. It also performs a check if there's a remote present.

Interesting, I was wondering how this exactly worked. Thanks for the info...

PhotoBooth = Core Image Funhouse + WebCam

For anyone interested, you can do all of the same effects that PhotoBooth provides to any image using Core Image Funhouse

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050603202507547

The only difference is that PhotoBooth does it "real time" with a webcam. If you can take a snapshot with your webcam (iSight or whatever) you can do all the same effects with Core Image Funhouse, and you can even do it with any other digital image you have....

With the isight permanently installed you can no longer

use apps like iglasses to greatly improve dark or low light situations.

Uhh. the physical location of the camera has precisely zero relation to iglasses working or not.
