Same here. I was keen on the Max.

There's no way I'm paying three times the price of a Pixel 2 for a phone that doesn't have the best camera.

Hopefully in 12 months phone manufacturers will increase sensor size too. We've been stuck at 12 Megapixels for a while.

Apple's "computational photography" engineers need to work harder.[/QUOTE

Definitely agree 100% with this. I really love my iPhone X but Apple is for some reason refusing to get innovative with their phones the past recent years. It’s all the same. Just baby’s steps ahead of each other but hundreds of dollars more expensive.

The Pixel 3 coming this October is going to give Apple a serious run for their money. I thought I’d never say this, but I think the days of Apple being the trophy phone is coming to an end and everyone is starting to take notice.

Apple needs to come out with some fire and they should have done so this year.

What's deplorable is that Apple have declined to offer computational photography as a software update to the X even though the A11 is more than capable of crunching extra data! All in an attempt to make the X obsolete and make people dump their phone on eBay for a very incremental upgrade.

Here’s another review with a couple of comparisons with Pixel 2 XL and Note 9 camera photos https://mashable.com/feature/apple-iphone-xs-max-review/#PxXSWeH9UaOK

I am in basic agreement with the commentary in the article. Knowning as I do the strengths and weaknesses of the auto modes of my S9+, Pixel 2 and 8 Plus cameras, I see enough even in the worst of these Austin Mann photos to make me feel positive about the potential for the 2018 iPhone cameras. The big question, though, is what else to Samsung and Google have up their sleeves for the year? Samsung may not be done with phone releases yet. Pixel 3 is about to be released. I’m not sure what Huawei has left but their P20 Pro is also very impressive for the people who are able to purchase one.

Of course the camera is but one piece of the total package. Most flagship level phone cameras and even a few mid tier challengers produce incredibly good pictures these days. It comes down to what the whole device offers you for the price you’re willing to pay.

Exactly ! This will have to end. Anyone who purchased an iPhone X last year will be mad to “ upgrade “ to the Xs or the big one. There is no need.

Especially when the blur is edited as post process effect. No reason whatsoever the x or 8 couldnt process this.

Maybe the neural engine is needed?

Of course it will, it's a single function (or dual function if you do video) device. The iPhone is a multi-function device, so it's going to have to compromise.

Also, what kind of DSLR are you getting for less than $1000 with a lens? My dad just dropped around $1300 on an 80D with a lens.
I got a 60D with an 18-200mm and a 50mm lens for 1200$ in 2014.

I get that the iPhone is more than just a camera, but lately Apple seems to be trying to sell the idea that the iPhone is capable of replacing professional cameras, which it isn't and never will be.

Even better:

The details and depth of field is fantastic.

Yeah they can easily do the same processing at a lower speed, but who cares? They can't apply the effect live, while as far as I know the A12 is able to do but the feature will be released in a future iOS update.

Artistically they're not but perhaps the goal was just to test out the camera rather than shoot an award winning portfolio.
Fair enough. I'm sure they're better, just seems like we're at incremental updates which I'm not as good at understanding what's better year-over-year.

I’m honestly not sure of the utility of doing it live... Surely the whole appeal of the effect in the first place is that you can adjust it afterwards. The quality of the effect isn’t good enough to be an attractive feature without the novelty of adjusting afterwards.

Anyway it’s a rubbish effect and should have just been left to third party apps/extensions to use embedded depth map to create the effect on any phones that can support it.

For the same reason why you can have a live preview of the portrait effect right now. You can always change the portrait effect editing the picture, but it is nice to see the effect live as your pointing your camera to a subject.

For post processing many third party apps can do similar blur filters even on older phones.

They should focus their efforts on improving their noise reduction and smoothing algorithms or making live photos more useful and efficient instead of half arsed ‘features’ to emulate features like bokeh that will never be up to par on a smartphone.

I agree. Improving software that helps technical stuff like noise is far better than trying to fake effects you get with a proper camera. Faking physical effects with software produces okay results at best, and often once you view the image on a larger screen the fakeness of the effect just increases. Case and point, people have been trying to fake film grain onto digital photos for a decade and a half and its still easy to tell the difference between a digital photo with a grain filter and an actual film photograph. Its just not worth the time and effort to develope a way to fake something when theres plenty of cheap cameras that can do it for real.

That’s kind of my point, for the amount of focus (excuse the pun) that Apple is putting on this blur feature in relation to iphone xs new features, it’s really just a mediocre effect that could be achieved with third party filters and any photo with a depth map taken on a phone with dual cameras. Apple aren’t promoting the ‘new’ bit as being able to do it live, they’re acting like the wow feature is editing focus in post, but it’s not a revolutionary feature at all.

For many people who have dual camera iphones it seems like this is just an effect that should have been promoted as an ios12 feature instead of apple desperately trying to come up with reasons to make the xs seem new.

Agree, but you have to consider that most of the pictures taken on smartphones are shared and watched on other smartphones. The fake bokeh looks good on a small screen, not so good when you watch it on a 27'' display but that's not their focus. Those pics need to look great when you share them on social media, that's it.
Live photos needs to get better, I like them a lot having a baby and they're funny, but once you treat them as normal picture and try to pick up the right frame in the sequence quality goes downhill.

Show us:
a few very low light images
a few high contrast images like a full moon against the night sky
test depth of field with poor lighting

Is this suppose to be an orange or a person? Still need to fix orange skin tone problem.

Very average for anything other than a basic point and shoot. What is all the fuss about ? I can buy a camera for a couple hundred dollars that will blow this away.

Pretty sure they said right in the keynote that it of course can’t replace a professional camera.
