Did you read the conditions of the photo you say has so much room for improvement? It’s a fairly epic attempt considering the conditions and the inherent limitations of a phone camera.
It's good considering the conditions, but it's still a pretty bad photo.

It looks like there is SO much room for improvement on that LiDAR portrait shot. Very blurry.

Glad I got the 12 now and not the Pro. Didn't think anyone would benefit much from the LiDAR this year anyway.

Certainly haven't noticed it or needed it on my iPad Pro.
Considering it was taken in extreme lowlight, I'd say its perfectly fine. But everyone's an expert...

I understand what you mean, but it depends on your definition of ‘bad’. It’s pretty ethereal. It works in my opinion.

Take this one of mine, one could suggest it’s not perfect by any means. But you wouldn’t say it’s a bad photograph by any stretch of the imagination.

Why? Are you also unhappy when Toyota loads more advanced features into a Lexus than a Corolla? If you pay more, you do have a right to expect more than a jazzier name for your purchase.
The switch from Plus to Max was explained as a move to feature parity between the Max and non-Max versions, so it's weird that in just two years they've flip-flopped on that and gave the bigger phone better features again.

While it's not my style, I would say yours is a hell of a lot better than the night mode selfie. I think the distinction I'd make is your shot appears to be that way by your choice. If you wanted, you could probably have taken it a bunch of different ways and edited it differently. For the night mode selfie, that appears to be close to as good as it's going to get. That level of noise and softening isn't really something you can easily do much with, so if it's not to your taste then you're out of luck.

Of course, I haven't used the phone and this is just one shot in worst-case conditions, so maybe there's more wiggle-room than I'm giving it credit for. All I'm saying is that to my eye, it's an objectively bad photo because of how it looks and how much room it gives you to fix it.

Thanks, and yes- you’re right of course. I’m not really saying the op photo is a good shot, per se, but it’s a fine example of what’s possible. I guess if you’re making the same point then I agree.

Good? A three second handheld exposure, I'd say that is more than good.
Substitute whichever positive adjective you'd prefer, I still think it's an objectively bad photo. It's impressive that the phone was able to capture it under those conditions, but at some point it's worth just taking a minute or two and working out some sort of lighting to get a much better shot photo in slightly less challenging conditions.

Why so butthurt?

Image 2 is the iPhone I’d wager.

Image 1 looks like it could be an unprocessed image, OOC file. I wonder how it would compare if it were processed to better resemble Image 2?

Does the iPad Pro actually use Lidar for the camera?

(I regularly see iPad Pro photos and they are very considerably better quality than an iPhone 8 (or my iPhone 6s). But I haven't found anything which confirms that Lidar contributes to its photography.)

IRC the 12 uses Lidar for focusing and depth maps. I think the problem with hat photo is that the person is blurred from not being able to hold perfectly still in a cold climate for 3 seconds. The NR might be over exaggerated because nothing in the face is sharp enough to be retained for crisp detail.
