I am having a hard time believing that this is the next generation iPod touch (it looks like the leaked 3G version that we saw last year).

I would expect to see the iPod Touch that is released in September to have some of the design cues from the new iPhone.

That is just my opinion though.

Or maybe apple wants to further distance the iPod touch from the iPhone?

one reason why this is a very old prototype or possibly a fake. Why did apple put the camera in the middle, instead of in the place of the plastic covering were the camera would be on the iphone????
makes no sense, they have the spot already cut in the metal why make more holes.

Placing the camera lens in the center makes it easier to aim. Apple can't do that with the iPhone because there's a speaker in the way.

The plastic cutout on the iPod touch is to improve the WiFi antenna sensitivity since the rest of the back is metal. It has nothing to do with the iPhone's camera placement since the phone does not use the metal back part.

You don't think the proximity to China has anything to do with it, then?

They are neighboring countries. The Foxconn manufacturing complex is located in Longhua in the south of China.

I would suspect some sort of border running operation here. Going via Cupertino seems like the long way around, doesn't it?

If you lived in the South Bay, as I do, then you would understand. These pictures could easily be taken here and then sent to their connection in Vietnam. It's not rocket science.

So really the iPod Touch 4th gen looks identical (apart from the camera) to the 3rd gen which looked identical to the 2nd gen,

God Apple's styling department must be having a hard time, then again, it's hard to perfect something so perfect :)

I wonder why the touch interface was so drastically different than what we saw with the OS 4.0 upgrade? It looks nothing like the current interface. I almost think these have to be older Apple prototypes.

Someone didn't read the story...

Er.

This prototype was produced in June 2009 (as stated in the article). This is a prototype of the iPod touch that is in stores now, not what will be coming out later this year.

Gizmodo and 9to5 Mac failed to state this in their articles.

Anyway, this isn't anything new, but I'm still disappointed that Apple didn't release a camera-equipped iPod touch in September. I had $300 waiting for Apple's pocket. :(

While a camera would be nice, what I really want to see in the Touch is a microphone. There are plenty of apps that use it, and using the headphones for it is inconvenient.

Also, I wonder if this version of the Touch could possibly be a silent update sometime real soon, followed by the real 4th gen device in September.

It is not in the future but lack of trademark and copyright enforcement. Vietnam does not have the same trade agreements with the USA as other parts of the world, thus technology leaks are more common. Some would blame Jane Fonda for this one!

Can you please know what you're talking about. This is a fairly ignorant and blanket statement about an entire country and its international trade regime. Vietnam is a member of the World Trade Organization and in turn, a signatory of the Treaty-on-Trade-Related-Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights. I'm not even going to get started on the multilateral treaties the US has reneged on.

Who are you looking to involve in all this? The Vietnamese Government? The Chinese? The Taiwanese? All for some random tech bloggers?

You don't think gizmodo would be pulling the same thing if they were 150 miles south of China? It's not about an international trade issue of a country vs. another. It's about bloggers drawing in traffic and making a dime.

Your personal experience here isn't really relevant. Mechanical hard drives are prone to fail in portable devices—this includes the iPod Classic—because movement while in use, particularly the sort associated with activities like jogging, is detrimental to them. Apple does have a relatively high failure rate for hard drives in these devices and it isn't due to a design flaw. This may come as a surprise, but it is common knowledge for anyone who works with this type of hardware or who is responsible for servicing this sort of product.

Statistics also tell that SSD or flash-memory currently still wears out quickly and therefore loses data much faster than a hard-disk. Its very likely that flash-based players, sold just a few years ago, will fail much earlier than the harddisk-based ones. Even before the battery fails.

Those leaks really take much of the surprise indeed, but it can serve Apple for the good too. Comments in forums like this one could be useful to make some last minute changes/improvements.

I'm not talking about pictures of the iPod Touch specifically, I'm talking about all the stuff emerging from Vietnam at the moment, such as the video of a guy fingering the next iPhone. That iPhone was no "prototype for field testing" like the one lost in California was. Some dudes in Vietnam are able to get their hands on actual Apple hardware that's currently being manufactured but isn't available for sale yet. That's why I think this is about some employee(s) at Foxconn in China handing them stuff they're not supposed to have.

If that's not what's going on, then what are the alternatives?

1) Some suicidal idiot at Apple HQ in Cupertino is leaking hardware to Vietnam.

2) It's a controlled leak. Bring on the tin foil hats.

I don't think this is real. My reason being is that in one photo on their website, it showed the iPod was running OS 3.1

Surely a new model would be on 4.0?

Vietnamese site Tinhte has scored another Apple prototype, this time posting photos and videos of an iPod touch carrying a rear-facing camera. The device is a 64 GB model and carries a "DVT-1" designation, which stands for "design verification test", a typically late-stage testing model.

The prototype does not, however, appear to be a particularly new creation, as its serial number indicates that it was manufactured in June 2009. In addition, a codename of "N18" appearing on a sticker on the back of the device indicates that this is a third-generation iPod touch prototype with camera similar to one that surfaced in August 2009 just ahead of the iPod touch revision launch in September. Similar prototypes also briefly appeared on eBay late last month.

Apple is believed to have scrapped the camera from last year's iPod touch revision relatively late in the design process, but may still be planning to include one in future versions.

i hope the camera isnt with that mini screen i hoped it would be a full and the camera looks horible but this thing could be old that some guy in viet decided to add a camera there might not be one this thing could what i said earlyer although i think there will be a camera if you look through the rumors and others just serf enough. might take away from the iphone but the iphone has stuff the ipod wont even with a camera and another plus for the phone is that its just a phone prople will still buy it because they need a phone why if you need a phone would you buy the touch if anything i think a camera would help couase if it doesnt have one the nano wouldnt be a horrible waste of mony for people who dont want to save another 50 bucks

I have NEVER had even ONE iPod hard drive fail on me - ever. And I've owned every model and use them a LOT. I even have given away my old ones and I still don't think any of them have failed hard drives.

n = 1

I had the original iPod and it had its HD replaced three times before it was replaced by the first generation nano... the most resilient iPod ever created. It goes without saying that the trend is towards solid state memory especially for something that is prone to rapid changes in acceleration and deceleration such as an iPod.
