The new Dell looks great, I just wish it was as light as the new Lenovo LaVie Z.

I don't think they'll realize it was a mistake. I think Apple purposefully leaves out features in early versions so they can introduce it later. I think they're planning all along, as you said, to include it in a revision or two. Also, I'd rather have an illuminated logo than a backlit keyboard.

What purpose does an illuminated logo serve? IMHO the backlit keyboard serves a Useful purpose

Wow. Way to completely 100% miss the point of the post you were replying to. Design/marketing has nothing, nothing to do with function. Go back a couple of pages and look at those pictures posted again of the MS event and the State of the Union address. Even in low light, grainy pictures, Apple computer's stand out so clearly that it'd be impossible to miss them. Now imagine if those logos weren't backlit. Suddenly it'd be impossible to tell if that were a room of Dell's.

I agree. If they drop the lit logo I'll seriously be questioning them. It's an iconic branding that emphasizes the company in exactly the kind of free, low key, understated way that every brand dreams of.

I agree, not having a glowing logo is the reason I did not but an iPhone. Without the glowing logo the iphone has been a complete disaster!!

no, currently the lit apple logo doesn't have it's own light. It uses the LCD's backlight.

if you have a current MBA you can test this out for yourself.

find a bright light source with your screen brightness off (so that its invisible and a blank screen). and hold the air up with the logo to the light. you will see the light come directly through and light up an apple shaped portion of your screen.

I'm wondering if the change is required due to a new manufacturing process that doesn't let this 'pasthrough' happen. maybe a new way of bonding the display to the glass to minimize depth, or new backlight that has something else behind it that would get in the way.

Thanks for clarifying, I do not have an MBA or MBP.

I updated my original image to be more detailed about what the thickness is coming from and why it is there. This should dissuade anyone thinking that the screen is as thick as an iPad.

Thanks, and I understand what you are trying to explain, but it doesn't explain the thickness of the metal on that side profile.

I'm hoping for a 11" tablet running a hybrid OS X / ios. It would replace my iPad air and my MacBook Air. I think it would sell like crazy at $999.

Its the thickness of the computer as a whole. Really not that complicated.

The image is just the screen, not the lower chassis, as far as I can tell. None of the pictures include the main chassis.

The display on current macbook air is as thick as the entire chassis give or take a mm. The total thickness of the new macbook air should be around the thickness of the display at the hinge.

Really not that complicated!!!

The iPad Smart cover is also almost as thick as the iPad if you only look at the hinge.

It helps one look pretentious.

How would you know, are you in Ive's design team? LOL

new embedded apple logo looks awesome. the illuminated logo is one of the things I hate about my rmbp. I have it covered with duct tape presently

What's your concern about the USB port? I tether with a USB 3.0 TetherTools TetherPro cable. They work great. Check out my work: www.tommedvedich.com

Awesome work by the way!
Thanks! and right back at you with the product photography.

My problem is if the rumours are true and they change the port to be a single charging/USB type C port, right now I'm fine using a TetherPro USB 2.0 Mini B 5 Pin Cable.

I'm sure eventually Tether Tools will come out with the cable needed but if there's only one port I might as well stick with my 13" rMBP for tether shooting.

Can't wait to see what they actually end up releasing :)

I don't, but that is how the macbook pros, macbook air's and the majority of other laptops are designed. LOL

Maybe it will also have a triangular display, who knows I'm not on Ives's design team. I'm also waiting for my Corvette with 6 tires!

I originally thought the same thing, but you are looking at the picture wrong. You're looking at the display from the bottom with the extra width added to give the hinge some swing room. I have annotated the original picture to highlight the actual display depth.

Ok, I see it now, sorry. Your modified graphic helps when understanding that the blue is part of the hinge for the screen. That pic is, I agree, mostly a view of the hinge thickness, as viewed from the bottom edge of the screen. The screen is thin and certainly not tablet-like. Thanks!

For my usage the new MBA seems to be a perfect fit. I don't need a powerful cpu as i am web browsing 90% of the time on my 2011 MBA, the extra battery life will be much more appreciated. I also don't need lots of ports but i still think Apple are crazy to have less ports on a newer machine. The backlight powered Apple logo is one of the really cool things on Apple Laptops so i am surprised they are ditching it unless moving to a AMOLED display in which case im fine with it.

I need at least one available USB port for my Logitec Keyboard receiver.

Battery life is probably most import. I'm looking for 13-15 hours.

My current 2012 MBA has been a champ, so shows no signs of failure. It's going to take a respectable upgrade to get me to move over.

No "mag-safe?"

One of my very favorite features on MacBooks has been the mag-safe power connector, which is held on magnetically, and falls away harmlessly if the cord is accidentally jerked or torqued. Unlike the traditional power jacks I had prior to using MacBooks, which would often fail within a couple years and often require the entire motherboard to be replaced, I've never had to touch either of the MacBooks I've bought...they're still running great, and one of them is eight years old. I would hate to lose that feature. I hope the rumors are wrong.

Everybody knows you need at least two USB ports to charge a MacBook. /s

How about using a flash drive? Or external harddrive? Or ANY USB device? Not necessary? And you realize Macbooks spend quite some time hooked to charger right? now what you do? Charge it OR use USB? you can only have one..
That's un-acceptable.

As has been said over and over, since USB-C can carry power and high data rates, it would be trivial for them to add a USB port on the charger or to add additional devices inline. It's how it has been designed to be used.

He never mentioned a Flash drive, just poking fun at you for saying you need more than one port to charge a laptop. I've never seen a laptop with more than one port for charging!!

He even put an S at the end to say that it is sarcasm.

Hello !

Has anyone measured the actual screensize from photos ?
What is the real screen size and aspect ratio ?

I don't have such a skills:(

Thanks !

I was wondering that as well, i wonder if it's going to be 12" or 12 point something. The 11" air is actually 11.6", so you never know the new 12" could be a bit bigger, something like 12.9" with a bit of luck.

Anyone else think we may see wireless charging? Plug the the power adapter and sit within a few metres. Would be even cooler if one charger could power more than one laptop. This would leave the single USB C port free for accessories (although I still think there will be 2 USB ports)

I think Thunderbolt is dead now. It's been years and it hasn't really caught on at all. Look at how many usb 3 drives are available in the same time and you can see why Apple will likely move to DisplayPort over USB C.

The MBA11 doesn't have an SD card slot. This machine is the same size as a MBA11, except thinner.

Besides, SD card slots are so yesterday. Everyone lives on the cloud today....

...except for me, since I am stuck with 2 MB/sec DSL way out in the country....

...except for me on an airplane or a ferry...

SD Cards slots are used by photographers to transfer the images from the camera to the computer/cloud

I'm sure Apple could come up with a Broadwell box that's just a keyboard and an 12" iPad that slots in on top, sort of like a Microsoft Surface

Why would they do that? It would have less battery life than the current iPad
