The only photo where you can see the thickness is this one:

Image

If you zoom into it, you can see that it's only thick for about 80% of the bottom edge of the display: which is the hinge mechanism exactly the same as every other recent model MacBook Air.

Thought I'd help out peoples investigations if they didn't click through to the original link:

This shows quite how deep the part is and explains why there isn't an illuminated logo - it seems there are some components behind the screen. Some others and myself speculate that the logic board might be behind the screen - after all, it's basically the same thickness as an iPad.

EDIT: Would also mean the hottest component of the notebook is no longer warming your balls / duvet, so would help enormously with heat dissipation.

sorry, missed the /s on my OP.

Most new high end cameras have WIFI, so I'm guessing that won't be the main means very soon. Doesn't mean some people will continue doing it though.

I guess walking on the moon was not innovation!

Getting there was the innovation, walking, well we've been doing that for millions of years. Google BTW isn't the only ones in this game by far. They're just very loud at publicizing their development efforts.

I hate the black apple logo. I don't know why apple keeps slapping that thing on their devices. I really wish they use another color.

Abd that logo better light up!

Isn't it obvious that it's a larger tablet running OS X? The MacPad.

Yep, it's a tablet. You can tell because it's running iOS.
Oh, except it's running OSX -- like a laptop.
Well, as a tablet, there's no keyboard.
What? It does have a keyboard? You can remove that, though, right? It's just a fancy cover.
Oh... so it's attached permanently with a hinge, like a laptop has.
But the keyboard is just there to be part of the keyboard, the real guts of the machine are behind he screen, right?
No? They're in the bottom part -- like a laptop...
Well, as a tablet device it's running an Apple ARM-based CPU right?
Intel, hmm? So, just like all the other laptops. I guess to run regular third party apps under OSX that would be a given.
But there's no spinning hard drive, right? It uses flash storage like a tablet.
Yeah... I guess lots of Apple laptops use flash storage now, too.
So lets see, other than the lack of ports and maybe not having a illuminated Apple logo, what do you think makes this a "larger tablet"?

They're not going to get rid of the glowing logo. Heck, the Apple logo is lit up by the display back light itself.

Again, that's the hinge, not the screen!

This is just a regular laptop screen folks. Not thicker. Not a tablet part. Just an updated laptop screen that may or may not have an illuminated logo.

Core M is a huge disappointment.

Stick with Intel Core i for the Air lineup.

This had better be the iPad Pro.

Any possibility that it is a "touchscreen" laptop? Wouldn't that explain the components behind the screen like an iPad...?

Apple is not going to create something because Microsoft did.. i.e. competing with the surface.. They already have that.. it is an iPad... Perhaps an iPad Pro would allow you to run OSX on it.. that would be nice..

But if this can't be a tablet due to the hinge.. and it can't be a "regular" laptop due to the thickness.. then perhaps it is a combination of the two... a Mac with a touchscreen... would that explain the thickness behind the screen? and the hinge?

or perhaps this is an iPad Pro that they just integrated a keyboard to for easier R&D while they worked on it and the final product will have no such thing.... I mean if they are trying to build an iPad Pro that might possibly run OSX(because this would compete with Surface) Wouldn't there be a lot of trouble shooting to get it to run on those components...????

I would love to have an iPad that ran OSX... That would be tits.... with a blue tooth keyboard it would be basically be a portable iMac!

*squints*

Ohhh, my sincere apologies, I mistook the shadow on the hinge to be the rubber edge.

I understand now. Planets align with this epiphany and I am somewhat disappointed. I thought it was some quirky new design or product category, now I realise it's just an razor thin screen.

*shrugs*

Assuming the power cord is of similar design. Maybe all of the extra ports (thunderbolt, usb, sd, etc) are built into the power brick.

When you are connected to a power supply you have access to all the needed ports. When you are mobile, there aren't a lot of reasons for you to need extra ports.

For my personal usage, I can't think of the last time I've needed to use USB while traveling, when my Macbook wasn't already plugged in..

Just a theory. :)

FYI, the 13" and 11" MacBook Airs have identical keyboards (and even desktop Macs share the same layout). No difference in key size or spacing.

The new 12", supposedly, will have slightly reduced spacing (same key sizes) so it will probably affect some peoples' habits.

That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. If the 12" is in the same size shell as the 11", which, by the rumors, it is, why would they change the spacing? It seems like it would make more sense to use the same layout as for the current 11" (which is the same as the current 13").

My guesses:
It doesn't have an illuminated logo because this device is thicker than usual, which is because it's got enough guts that they cover the entire area under the screen preventing light directly to the logo, which is because it has got its entire hardware and battery under that screen.

I say its larger because it is bigger than the current iPad when compared to the MBP 13 (as shown in OP).

Look again. This is a standard screen with a hinge. The screen itself is MUCH thinner than the iPad it is compared to. I can't believe we are still correcting this after 14 pages.

Get ready to repeat that a 100 times more ;)

I'm sure Apple could come up with a Broadwell box that's just a keyboard and an 12" iPad that slots in on top, sort of like a Microsoft Surface

I absolutely hate this wobbly piece of joke you call surface.

looking at sales most people don't like it. They are doing so well that the 1 year old Surface 2 is not manufactured anymore. Ironicaly I thought that was the best one since the new one is just way to big for a tablet and to square for a laptop. Also Keyboard and Magic Trackpad go along way to making the laptop experience kick ass and the surface is hopeless in that regard.
I wonder how the big ipad will do since I don't expect the majority of people to buy it. It seems like 10 inch is the sweet spot in tablets and apple nailed that since day 1. They nailed it so well in fact that all competitors now do square tablets instead of widescreen. Laptops on the other hand not so much.
It's very hard to combine those 2 categories and that's why the surface is sort of a failure. Either the tablet experience sucks due to massive size, wrong screen and bad UI or the laptop experience sucks since the screen is too small, not widescreen and mouse and keyboard are meh.

IMO the only way of reasonably merging the laptop and a tablet would be something like Yoga 3, but with additional foldable cover for keyboard and trackpad. It's still not sturdy by any means (flexing around hinges when fully opened by 180deg), but it's significantly better.

I think only Apple could theoretically pull off something like this. I could see that with iPad Pro, if it will/would be using Core-M CPU, then it could dual boot iOS and OS X, have a nice integrated stable adjustable stand on the back and could come together with compact wireless keyboard with integrated trackpad. But seeing the way Apple is going with the upcoming Air, that concept is highly unlikely to happen.
