No thunderbolt or way to connect to an external monitor?! Err, I don't get it. I literally use my MBA everyday but mostly have it connected to an external display at work. Surely they will allow for external display...

How many driverless cars has Google sold so far?

It's not innovation if I cannot buy it.

Wait, what? Innovation stands alone from whether that innovation is mass marketed or not.

For example, Apple has filed hundreds of patents that they do not, and likely never will, use.

Does that mean Apple's patents have lost any "innovation" simply because you can't buy an Apple product that uses them?

I wish Apple would hurry up and get this 12" MBA released, i have been dying to press the buy button on a 13" rMBP all week, but i want to see what this new Air is going to be like first.

Apple doesn't want Microsoft to be embarrassed?

o_O Your reading comprehension is kinda poor, isn't it?

If there is a polished Apple logo on the new laptop it will no longer be illuminated, so you will not see as many press pictures as this. So, despite the photographed prototype of the laptop shell we have here showing Apple moving to a polished metallic logo on the lid, they will likely continue to use the illuminated logo on the final design.

First, instead of a backlit Apple logo on the back of the display assembly as is typically seen on Apple's notebooks, there is a polished metal logo more like those seen on iPads, with iFanr speculating the change could be tied to the device's thinness.

At first I was really upset, but now, I actually feel like it would look better than the current ones with the lit apple logo.

Apple will save a huge amount[*] of cash money by removing the illuminated logo, by simplifying the production line and reducing the device's part count.

They are presumably also able to make the display thinner by removing the illuminated logo.

Making a better, thinner, more efficient design has won over concerns of vanity. You're crazy if you think Apple are going to go and redesign the entire device to have a glowing logo just because of a photo.

[*] when multiplied by the millions of MacBook units produced each year.

REALLY hope they do not do the metal logo. So out of place and such a downgrade. So far, even though they are just rumors, I haven't liked many of the developments on this machine, and probably will be switching from the Air line to the Pro line because of it if true. Cheap and downgrading. Less ports, less usability for the sake of what... thinness on an already very thin machine? Every single notebook in the lineup with an illuminated beautiful translucent logo, and this one odd one out just not matching. DON'T do it. Jobs would have NEVER let this slide, if it is true. Never. Not a doubt in my mind. I sincerely hope these rumors are not true. The black bezel wider retina screen is a great idea, but everything else has been off. This also could just be a random prototype testing some other things though. So don't want to go too wild on jumping to conclusions.

looks freaking awesome I wasn't really sure about the size, but it looks quite all right. And it's thinner, yay! Thanks for showing the pics.

No backlit logo is probably another supply-chain optimization or something.

Hey, I wonder what's more impressive, 10 posters and 2 TV ads or seeing those big rooms full of aluminium laptops... Uhm... Oh you're still waiting for it right? Yeah, the AL laptops with glowing Apple logos.

Your user base is doing the heavy lifting on your marketing efforts in real life here, but sure, remove the iconic traditions.
They can't be worth anything.

That's the problem when you load up your brand, company culture and identity with emotions.
If you take away the things people fell in love with too much you don't do anyone a favor.
Let's hope it saves you many cents per Macbook made, has to be worth something! ;)

Looks like the new MacBook Air 12" will have only one CPU option (no upgrade) and will be a little slower than the current standard macbook air, most likely due to it's new M Core 4.5 Watt CPU but the battery will probably last close to 24 hours. :)

LOL. Apple is all about vanity. Why do you think they keep making the iPhone thinner when people don't really want it thinner, and want better battery life?

You're crazy if you think Apple are going to go and redesign the entire device to have a glowing logo just because of a photo.

Considering other Apple laptops have the backlit logo, logically that would make going to a polished logo a redesign.

SD Cards slots are used by photographers to transfer the images from the camera to the computer/cloud
OK but I am not a photographer, I take photos with my phone and use it to upload to the cloud.

Anybody who's carrying a DSLR and a few camera lenses in a huge padded bag probably won't mind the extra size/weight of an 11" MacBook Air or 13" MacBook Pro.

No thunderbolt or way to connect to an external monitor?! Err, I don't get it. I literally use my MBA everyday but mostly have it connected to an external display at work. Surely they will allow for external display...
It has a USB 3.1 connector, which can transfer data at 10Gbps (exactly the same speed as Thunderbolt) and can drive any Display Port monitor (exactly the same as Thunderbolt).

Also, if your MacBook is almost always sitting on a desk while you use it, then you probably don't want care enough about portability to fit within the target market for this model.

----------

The display lid looks quite thick and bulky.
The only photo where you can see the thickness is this one:

macbook_air_12_display_2.jpg

If you zoom into it, you can see that it's only thick for about 80% of the bottom edge of the display: which is the hinge mechanism exactly the same as every other recent model MacBook Air.

I mean really, how many different (but almost the same) Apple laptops do you need to chose from? Even smaller screen with a smaller keyboard, is that innovation?

The only thing interesting about it will be if it is ARM powered.

I am on a late 2010 13 inch MBA...I plan on doing some long term travel starting this fall...I would love something that has the screen size of the 13 inch but with the footprint of the 11 inch...I plan on doing a lot of writing so I can't quite get down to the 11 and since I will be will be living out of a backpack for about 15 months, I am looking at being as efficient as possible.

to bad that apple is not using a smaller bezel. That would be awesome just like the screen of the dell xps 13 2015
