My bet is that there is either a battery of a CPU behind the screen, making the MBA super thin.
Of course there won't be any ports. Essentially, apple will kill the ports on 12 MBA so that people who use them will have to invest into MBP. Makes a lot of sense from sales perspective.

If it comes with now ancient iOS operating system i will skip.

Please, give us proper OS for device that large!
But they will not as it would eat sales of laptops.
What are you talking about? No rumor suggest that this will be running iOS, also, the odds are 99.9% that this "device" will run OS X like all the other laptops in Apples lineup, also, this laptop will eat sales of laptops? Hmm.

The display isn't thicker at all, it just uses a metal hinge. It's clearly shown in the photos that the display is thinner than the iPad Air 2 next to it.

But why leave all the space and why ditch the glowing apple logo?

I've often thought about the possibility of a Surface Pro 3 competitor with a detachable keyboard. Think about an iPad Pro that docks with a base that houses a Core M + OSX + Battery. You dock the iPad Pro and your iPad Pro becomes a screen running OSX, undock it and it becomes and iPad Pro.

Super Out-There Theory....

What if Apple discontinues the Mac Mini? It hasn't received a big update in a while, with the most recent update being a real disappointment. But, instead, apple releases what is essentially keyboard docking station? You pay $500 for what is essentially the base to a laptop computer.

This base serves as the base for a rMBA, dock for an iPad Pro, and MacMini Replacement. This could also explain the USB-C connector: you'd want a more stable power connector instead of MagSafe for a MacMini replacement.

Further, imagine a situation when you connect this base station to an external monitor, the iPad pro reverts to iOS and OSX is displayed on the external monitor.

So, you can either buy a redesigned MacMini that is essentially a computer inside a keyboard that doubles as an iPad Pro Dock. Or you can buy a rMBA. It's a CTO thing.

Maybe there's something wrong with my eyes because the iPad in that photo definitely looks thinner than the new MBA display.

Also, I think his point was that the new MBA display looks thicker than the current MBA display.

How can you ditch the light up Apple logo? That's almost iconic when you see a apple notebook, that sucks if true, not very innovative on ditching the light up Apple

The illuminated Apple logo is nifty, no doubt, but it's not always been an Apple mainstay. It's likely the desire for thinness that has motivated the move to the quicksilver Apple logo. It's perhaps the least compromised part about this computer, if the rumours about limited input connectivity are true. However, not all of us associate the illuminated logo with Apple laptops. The first one to have it was either the Lombard or Wallstreet in the late 1990s. They didn't bother illuminating the original iBook's logo either.

My concern is where this will be positioned within the MB range and if this 12" will be low on the power side.

At the risk of sounding like a hipster, I think the lit Apple logo was cool before everyone knew what a Mac was. Now it does kinda come across as pretentious advertising.

I don't know. I still like it, but I don't mind it going, either.

But the first illuminated Apple logo was upside down when viewed from behind. There was nothing cool about that! =P I agree with you on all points.

*Technically, the image below represents a computer without an illuminated Apple; but the subsequent model had it and looked virtually the same from behind.

Anyone want to fathom a guess as to thickness, based off the images of the hinge?

Looking at the iFixit teardown of the current MBA, isn't there a rough relation between the screen attachment sectino and the ultimate thickness of the MBA?

E.g. If the lid looks like below when flat, shut on MBA

we know the depth of the hinge is iPad thickness.

I travel on motorbike in Morocco using pistes (tracks) a lot of the time, carrying my gear with me. When I bought my MacBook Air I wanted the portability of the 11.6" but really needed the screen real estate (1440 x 900 pels) of the 13.3" for route planning (e.g. zoom in on satellite images), and that's what I went for.

I need to buy a couple more MBAs in the near future and I would rather have a 14" display (which was rumoured at one time) in the chassis of the 13". I'm fine with the machine otherwise, I don't need it to be faster, thinner, lighter, and would like to keep all the connections it currently has, thank you very much!

Ideally with a higher resolution display, maybe 1680 x 1050 (or whatever) to give more screen real estate.

I'd even consider a 15" MBA, but going down in screen size is a no-no for me.

Random question:

How come laptops don't have mobile Internet compatibility and a sim card slot? Always wondered that. It obviously fits into tablets so why not laptops and a laptop is a PORTABLE device and would be perfect for a small air like this.

Battery life?

Think thats because they run full OS's and not a mobile OS. That would use so much data. I knoooowwwww most have a flatrate, but still thats limited to some GB's

I am with you on that one, I would love to have 4G built in!
(yes I can use my phone for teetering as well but that eats up the battery and as soon as I make a call the data connection is broken)

Stupid

I think this thing is stupid, but sadly, if it came with built in cellular and was REASONABLY priced at around $800 with a 256 GB SSD, I would buy this instead of another iPad. And as long as I think of it as an iPad replacement and NOT a laptop, then eh.

End of an era with the glowing logo it seems, I was sad to see the happy mac go on boot up and now this

I think the biggest thing about having this is that lately the wireless technology has evolved so quickly that you'd have a notebook operating on a slower network in just a couple of short years, if that. I suppose you could set it up with a daughtercard like setup, how's that for an old computer user term lol, however that would just take additional space as well.

Would be great though but I think the point someone else made is valid too, using your phone as a hotspot. 10.10 now makes that easier so it's a rock and a hard place. I, for one, would welcome a setup like that but I don't think nearly enough would to make it worthwhile to design and manufacture given the other options. :(

I'm calling it now. The next gen MB Pros are gonna come in 14" and 16".

I thought about this a while ago.

It makes sense if you look at it this way :
The iPad Mini is 7.9" so almost 8", The iPad Air is 9.7" so almost 10", the rMBA will be 12" and the rMBP with 14" and 16".

Wow, that would be the first Apple notebook in like 25 years that doesn't have a backlit Apple logo.

Just to save a few bucks. Shame.
