you passed up the 4 and 4s(2 years of waiting) and now going to wait another year till the 5s? They wont change the design next year so your waiting 4 years for a Possible design change to something that of the 3 and 3s...
Id make the switch now because i think they wont ever go back to what the 3 and 3s looked like. They look cheap. plastic cracks( i replaced 4 phones over 2 year span for cracked plastic) and the ugly chrome bezel that got scratched easily from cases.... The 3g and 3gs look horrible in comparison to the 4 and 4s. In terms of materials used on the outside its a huge jump. I personally loved the 4 design coming from the plastic iphone days. I dont understand how people prefer that design over the 4,4/s. I think i will like the new design i was hoping for a complete redesign so im a little disappointed but i think i will still like it. Much better then the 3,3/s days for sure.
im surprised youve held out this long with a 3gs. the screen itself is horrible.

I quite like the 3GS. It's comfortable to hold and I don't mind the plastic. I've never understood why people object to plastic, it's light, strong and durable. I absolutely hate the 4/4s design. It feels heavy in the hand, it's uncomfortable to hold and I would be terrified of dropping it and cracking the glass. I do agree that if I don't like the new design there is no point holding out any longer. I'll probably just buy the S3 instead. I've noticed a distinct change in Apple's design policy over the past few years. Out has gone the brave new designs every few years in favour of a more evolutionary policy which means small changes. I've heard some describe it as a "design classic" which needs no changes. Just seems boring to me coz I like change. I like new radical designs every year or two. Hey ho off to Sammy we go. Good job I didn't buy too many iOS apps.

From the question on the translated site asking why the NFC sensor was on the front?

It's part of the display module, but that doesn't mean it's on the front. I'm sure NFC will work "both ways".

I thought they meant the black area on the other side highlighted yellow.
Now I wonder if that might be Authentec fingerprint sensor?
Given the way their tech works their sensor should be able to pick up an ear and act as a more reliable proximity sensor.

Since when is the proximity sensor unreliable?

I passed on the iPhone 4 and 4S because I really didn't like the design so I was hopeful that after 2 years we would see a radically new design.

I'm with you there. I've always preferred the 3GS design too. But this new iPhone is a radical new design. It's a completely new unibody aluminium shell with completely different construction. No more "glass sandwich" with a stainless steel band.

It may be superficially similar to the 4/4S but I'll bet it will feel quite different to hold and use.

----------

It worked like crap on every single Android phone I owned expect the Sprint GS2

Sure, but on an iPhone it works great. Always has.

The ambient light sensor, on the other hand, has never worked properly IME.

Occasionally enough for there to be scope for it to be more reliable.

from linked Macotakara article
Considering past leaked new iPhone photos which are reported by iLab Factory or other reporters, a hole is pitted beside iSight camera and new expanded flex-cable, which are connected volume button, reaches where this hole places. This meant some sensor should be assembled on side of iSight camera, and it was cleared now. NFC sensor is it.

I've not thought NFC to be placed on front LCD side of iPhone.

I know it's bad google translation but...
this description sounds to me more like a sensor in a recess on the front face and addressing the front of the device. I mean having the NFC sensor on the back of the front panel so that it still addresses the back doesn't seem that remarkable.

Looks too similar to the 4/4S :(

I don't understand this complaint but it seems that lots of people feel this way. Maybe Apple should add some racing stripes and bolt on a spoiler? Would that make it a more appealing device? Frankly I'm glad that Apple doesn't add all sorts of geegaws to their products. They look classy and refined.

Do you also feel disappointed that the new MacBook Pros look the same as the last MacBook Pros? How about the most recent iMac revisions?

I object cause in my experience everything Apple makes in plastic tends to crack. My Macbook got several cracks and this was endemic with Macbooks (to the point Apple would replace the keyboard if you asked cause it was so common), my iphone 3G cracked in the corner where you put the dock connector in (and apparently also was common to happen).

So in my experience, plastic is not durable (at least not the stuff that Apple uses), and even if you take the best care of it, it will still crack (and gets easily scratched up). At least with glass if you are careful you can keep it in good condition (and isn't as easily scratched up)..

You're lashing out like an overly emotional child. Many of us like for our new phones to look different from our current ones simply for a change of pace. Who said anything about racing stripes?! Are you still in grade school?

Maybe that chip is a fingerprint reader?

I'd prefer a fingerprint reader over NFC, actually. So long as they open up an API for it for developers that is. I'd love to have it for two-factor authentication for everything. It would also be awesome to use just for unlocking my iPhone every time I pick it up.

I doubt we'll see it until iPhone 6 though.

technically the iPhone we are talking about is the 6th gen :D:D:D:D

I'm not criticizing, i'm just making a statement. The design is the same so ill keep my iPhone another year, that's it.

My point is that the design is unlikely to change significantly in the near future. I don't know how can this design look the same to you, cause except for the home button, everything is different. The change is comparable to 3GS -> 4

No way is the same jump of 3gs to 4 ; i do agree that theres not so much to change :) in reality the design its perfect as it is but i will love if they come up with some more different.

So buy a case if you want your phone to look different.

And lay off the name calling.
