Golden devices have been made by Samsung, Nokia and others for ages. It's pure coincidence that they announced a golden S4 right after the golden iPhone 5S.

The timing was definitely intentional. The fact that they made a golden S4 may or may not be coincidental, but the timing wasn't. Not a chance.

Can you elaborate on R&D required for a retina display?
It's not some new technology. Plus, you'd think they know pretty much how to work with retina displays by now.

It's a different form factor, requiring them to adapt the retina technology to a smaller screen. Components, board, the works will have to be adapted, and that requires R&D money (even if it's iterative R&D). The production process would have to be adapted as well, and that would require investments for such adaptation to take place (also, even if it is iterative R&D for a peripheral technology, i.e., production process technology).

Sorry I don't agree. Mini was a brand new product last year. The primary concern was getting something thin and light with amazing battery life and great build quality. They got away with the higher price tag and crappier screen because of that. I'm not so sure they can do that two years in a row, especially with the Nexus 7 and Kindle devices with amazing displays at cheaper price points. The "premium" people paid for last year is not new this year and I think people will expect more than just a spec bump. Plus iOS 7 was really designed for retina displays. To keep one of their most popular devices completely non retina is pure madness.

They also got away with not one, but two generations of iPhones (4 and 4S) with 3.5in screens before releasing the iPhone 5 with its 4in screen. And throughout those two generations people screamed exactly that: Apple was screwing users over with crappier screens while the competition had bigger ones already on the market. Think of how many times you read a variation of your last sentence prior to the iPhone 4S release: "To keep one of their most popular devices with 3.5in screens is pure madness".

As much as I want the next gen minis to sport retina displays, it won't surprise me at all if Apple keeps it for next year models. It also won't surprise me at all if they still sell as many of these new non-retina minis as they can make.

----------

Have you considered the possibility that the first generation mini is already priced such that the addition of retina would not have to make an increase in price necessary?

No, but that doesn't disprove my original statement: recent history shows that they don't need to add all the available bells and whistles in order to sell like mad. No 128GB model? No problem: still 9 million new iPhones sold.

The mini is a budget device just like the 5C based solely on hardware inside and price. Deal w/ it :p The cheaper alternatives are just making very little money while iOS devices make a good bunch. They are not gonna add touch-id and extra colors to it; it would cost them too much to be viable from a business point of view, plus it would canabalize even more sales of the reg size iPad.

No, the budget iPad is the iPad 2 which is still available. The mini is a different device aimed at a different market. It definitely wouldn't cost them too much as the device is priced very highly. They did not skimp and go cheap on the first mini, they gave it the right components for what it was; a smaller tablet. Why would they give it the same processor as the full-sized iPad when it had such an incredibly small resolution? The lack of retina screen wasn't down to price, but down to battery life.

Just my opinion, anyway. Either both sizes of iPad will get Touch ID, or neither will. Personally I don't care.

I must be the only one, but I just can't stand the ugly ring around the fingerprint sensor.
On the iPad, on the new iPhone, just absolutely ugly...ruins the design.

Hyperbole much?
It's no uglier than the little white squarish thing it used to have.

At least you can't really see the ring if you get the space gray version. But I keep forgetting that space gray is the most appalling color Apple has ever come up with, just a horrible horrible example of the extreme dullness that sucks the life out of whatever room it's placed in.

Which is why many folks are put off by it - for the security concerns of handing over they fingerprints, and LACK of plausible deniability when it comes to where/when you are at every second - since IT knows you opened the phone/tablet with YOUR fingerprint.

So while I agree that the security issue is a parameter used to define the devices, it's not all good, as you seem to think.

I agree with you up until you made an assumption on what I think. What I think belongs in the "political" forum, but I'll just say it can be categorized by "nanny-state".

I thought I would like the gold but man the granite looking iPhone definitely has my attention.

I disagree, I think we will see touch id on the reg size iPad, later for the next gen of iPad mini (3) we will see it w/ touch-id. Also, a processor is not just for the screen... I guess that is why my 5S has an A7 ;) Let's just see what happens come October

I was simply referring to that security point you mentioned. In that context, it seemed like you noted it as something positive. So I was just pointing out how much of a negative, a large % of people saw it as. That is all.

Have a great weekend:cool:

Why? Not everyone is going to buy an iPhone. Apple should be focusing on every category so each customer's tech needs are fulfilled, not just yours. ;)

I said that mostly in jest but I look at it this way. . .

If Apple is struggle with iPhone (Gold demand) what makes you think a larger device would be any easier?

Furthermore I said that comment earlier when MY iPhone wasn't yet shipped. . . . however It shipped this afternoon so at this point bring on the gold iPad! :D

Dont really know how much sense it makes toadd Touch-ID to an ipad. I dont even know anyone who cares to passcode protect them.

I don't know how much sense it would make adding Touch ID to the iPad but it would keep me from pulling out my hair! I keep holding my thumb on the home button on my iPad waiting for it to unlock. I've had my iPhone 5S for 1 week and I'm so comfortable with it.

So how long until Samsung start shipping golden coloured devices?

So how long before Apple copy Samsungs OS ... Oh wait, ios7, they already have!

So how long before Apple copy Samsungs pastic back ... Oh wait, the 5C, they already have!

So how long before Apple copy Samsungs watch ... Oh ... Not got there yet!

So what.

----------

Take my money Apple! But I hope the full size iPad gets Touch ID next month.

There are millions of people like you, eager to hand over your money whatever the spec. Sad really!

I would say as much sense as adding one to the iPhone!

Back when the iPhone 5 came out, some Walmart's had a killer price on the iPad 2, which was posted here. I went to my local Walmart to check, and naturally this wasn't the case in my area. The "idiot" behind the electronics counter told me that the next iPad and iPhone were going to be available in different colors, which I thought was crazy. At that point there were no rumors about colored iPhones, let alone iPads. Now look what we have. I'd love to know where this guy at Walmart got his info.

I might actually pick up a Mini, doesnt really make sense if you already have a 5s but seems like fun if not ill just sell it

That sentiment makes no sense to me, one is a phone and one is a tablet. Both are great devices, but unless money is the issue (or something else I'm not seeing) why would you forgo a mini just because you had an iPhone?? I've got both and will keep both. I actually use my mini far more than I use my iPhone, in fact if I had to get rid of one, I'd get rid of the iPhone - I'd find it much easier to get along with a simple phone and my mini, than to get along with just an iPhone and no tablet.

The mini is a budget device just like the 5C based solely on hardware inside and price. Deal w/ it :p

OMG, are people still claiming this? The mini is *not* a budget device like the 5c, it's a smaller iPad, deal with it. [rolls eyes]

If Apple does add Touch ID to the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, one of the main reasons will be what you just described. In other words, to have a consistent and equal experience across all iOS devices. Perhaps, an 64-bit A7/M7 & retina display will come along for the ride (with the mini 2).

THIS.

Could be economies of scale as it is easier to make one home button to use in all devices?

they are still making home buttons for ipod touch, iPhone 5c and iphone 4s that aren't touch id so this makes no sense. All of those models put together will likely sell more than the 5S does if past numbers are any indication

The iPhone can do all the Mini can do, even has better specs but just the screen size, no im ohk its fun to watch on it and all but if you also have a MBP, a Mini will serve no purpose, the Gold just made it look better

Silver, Standard Screen, A6 - wait another year
Gold, Standard Screen, A6 - wait another year
Gold, Retina, A6 - hmmmm.....

Gold, Retina, A7 - SOLD !!!

Maybe fake, but i wouldn't be surprised if Apple actually DID to a Gold ipad mini...

Why the hell not ?

It would tie in perfectly with the 5s... And it would also add a compliment to your friends as to the saying "so THAT'S why pricing is expensive".

I wouldn't mind one..... but it had to have Retina :p Maybe not a mini but in gold, would settle me, maybe with Touch ID i'm sold.

Let me guess....

Apple under Tim Cook -- "gold" everything = innovation.

Sigh.....how times have changed.

Screen size simply can't compare between the devices, regardless of specs, truly, and I don't agree about having a MBP - I've got a MBA, which is the best complement to a mini in my opinion, both so portable, same would go with the lovely MBP, the mini would be a great complement to that machine as well.
