Golden devices have been made by Samsung, Nokia and others for ages. It's pure coincidence that they announced a golden S4 right after the golden iPhone 5S.
Can you elaborate on R&D required for a retina display?
It's not some new technology. Plus, you'd think they know pretty much how to work with retina displays by now.
Sorry I don't agree. Mini was a brand new product last year. The primary concern was getting something thin and light with amazing battery life and great build quality. They got away with the higher price tag and crappier screen because of that. I'm not so sure they can do that two years in a row, especially with the Nexus 7 and Kindle devices with amazing displays at cheaper price points. The "premium" people paid for last year is not new this year and I think people will expect more than just a spec bump. Plus iOS 7 was really designed for retina displays. To keep one of their most popular devices completely non retina is pure madness.
Have you considered the possibility that the first generation mini is already priced such that the addition of retina would not have to make an increase in price necessary?
The mini is a budget device just like the 5C based solely on hardware inside and price. Deal w/ itThe cheaper alternatives are just making very little money while iOS devices make a good bunch. They are not gonna add touch-id and extra colors to it; it would cost them too much to be viable from a business point of view, plus it would canabalize even more sales of the reg size iPad.
I must be the only one, but I just can't stand the ugly ring around the fingerprint sensor.
On the iPad, on the new iPhone, just absolutely ugly...ruins the design.
Which is why many folks are put off by it - for the security concerns of handing over they fingerprints, and LACK of plausible deniability when it comes to where/when you are at every second - since IT knows you opened the phone/tablet with YOUR fingerprint.
So while I agree that the security issue is a parameter used to define the devices, it's not all good, as you seem to think.
No, the budget iPad is the iPad 2 which is still available. The mini is a different device aimed at a different market. It definitely wouldn't cost them too much as the device is priced very highly. They did not skimp and go cheap on the first mini, they gave it the right components for what it was; a smaller tablet. Why would they give it the same processor as the full-sized iPad when it had such an incredibly small resolution? The lack of retina screen wasn't down to price, but down to battery life.
Just my opinion, anyway. Either both sizes of iPad will get Touch ID, or neither will. Personally I don't care.
I agree with you up until you made an assumption on what I think. What I think belongs in the "political" forum, but I'll just say it can be categorized by "nanny-state".
Why? Not everyone is going to buy an iPhone. Apple should be focusing on every category so each customer's tech needs are fulfilled, not just yours.![]()
Dont really know how much sense it makes toadd Touch-ID to an ipad. I dont even know anyone who cares to passcode protect them.
So how long until Samsung start shipping golden coloured devices?
The timing was definitely intentional. The fact that they made a golden S4 may or may not be coincidental, but the timing wasn't. Not a chance.
Take my money Apple! But I hope the full size iPad gets Touch ID next month.
I don't know how much sense it would make adding Touch ID to the iPad but it would keep me from pulling out my hair! I keep holding my thumb on the home button on my iPad waiting for it to unlock. I've had my iPhone 5S for 1 week and I'm so comfortable with it.
I might actually pick up a Mini, doesnt really make sense if you already have a 5s but seems like fun if not ill just sell it

that sentiment makes no sense to me, one is a phone and one is a tablet. Both are great devices, but unless money is the issue (or something else i'm not seeing) why would you forgo a mini just because you had an iphone?? I've got both and will keep both. I actually use my mini far more than i use my iphone, in fact if i had to get rid of one, i'd get rid of the iphone - i'd find it much easier to get along with a simple phone and my mini, than to get along with just an iphone and no tablet.
omg, are people still claiming this? The mini is *not* a budget device like the 5c, it's a smaller ipad, deal with it. [rolls eyes]
Could be economies of scale as it is easier to make one home button to use in all devices?

The iPhone can do all the Mini can do, even has better specs but just the screen size, no im ohk its fun to watch on it and all but if you also have a MBP, a Mini will serve no purpose, the Gold just made it look better
