I do not know about the authenticity of the images, but I believe that it is more likely that the Mini 2 includes TouchID than a retina display (although I believe it will have a retina display as well). I'd even go as far as to say that all iOS devices going forward will include TouchID - 5C will be the last without. My guess is that Apple views TouchID as a core technology that will be prevalent across their portfolio, much like Lightning.

IMO all Macs released in 2014 will also include TouchID, which will further Apple's push into the corporate world.

When has Apple cared about cannbalization? I'm sure they'd rather have someone buying a mini over a full size iPad than buying a Nexus or Kindle.

They have always cared in all their devices including macs

touch id and gold on the 'cheap' iPad I don't think so.

The mini is currently aluminum and glass with chamfered edges. Unless the mini moves to colored plastic (doubtful) why wouldn't it be updated to the 5S colors? The gold 5S isn't more expensive than the silver or space gray models.

If the mini has an A7, Touch ID and Retina, I'd be jumping to my wallet in a nanosecond. Even if the price increased a little from £269 for 16GB to something like £329, it'd still be great value.

Now I'm just hoping it gets announced soon!

oooooo!

Throw in a retina display, and this ipad release will be a mega phenomena!

ipad mini.. touch ID... retina display... a new faster chip... different colours eg gold...

wow. They'll sell millions!

Apple can just do one of those 4 updates and sell millions. People will buy them.

Am I the only one who thinks that looks really nice? The Gold is such a subtle shade that it doesn't look tacky at all. It works with the TouchID Sensor golden ring.

When looking at the shipping times of the 5s gold models I would say: No, you're not alone :D

You are joking, right? No dGPU in the mini, no dGPU in the 13" MBPro. The SECOND Apple felt they could remove the dGPUs in those machines, so as to not cannibalize sales, they did it. Prior to that, at least in the mini, Apple purposely gave you a substandard amount of VRAM, in order to differentiate as much as possible.

Huh? How do you explain the iPod mini and nano? Or the MacBook Air? Or the iPad for that matter which no doubt has been cannibalizing Mac sales. And even the iPad mini has no doubt cannibalized full size iPads. In fact Tim Cook has said numerous times that Apple doesn't fear cannibalization.

I really like the size of the mini but don't really want the non-retina display--would be great to have a retina mini with a gold finish but any finish would be fine with me.

No I'm not joking. Yes I don't doubt there are instances where Apple wants to upsell people to more expensive product but that's not the same as fearing cannibalization. The latter would be never producing an iPad because of worries that people would stop buying Macs.

If Apple were to release the iPad mini in gold and with Touch ID, but no retina, this would be a tough, tough decision. Would you go ahead and buy the gold touch mini now, with a retina version possibly coming out in the spring? Hard decision.

really?!?

iPod nano replaced the mini

MBA 13" is way different than a MBPro, even w/out retina and different people will choose depending on features

iPad vs Mac different products

When you have a big portfolio you will have some cannibalization, you just don't want it to get too crazy... Hell just read the post above you that replied to you.

The mini is a budget device just like the 5C based solely on hardware inside and price. Deal w/ it :p The cheaper alternatives are just making very little money while iOS devices make a good bunch. They are not gonna add touch-id and extra colors to it; it would cost them too much to be viable from a business point of view, plus it would canabalize even more sales of the reg size iPad.

Why can't it be like with the MacBook, where you don't feel like you're a year or two behind with the tech just because you wanted a smaller size. Apple never had a issue with one of its own products canabalizing another. It just shows them what the market really wants. The "large" iPad isn't large enough for some and in its current form, too heavy for many. It's a "in-between" size for some of us. A 12.9" iPad/MacBook hybrid, a 7.9" iPad mini with retina, A7/M7, Touch ID an a 4.7" iPhone would be great for some of us.

how about instead of a gimmicky fingerprint sensor, apple implements a useful feature, such as the ability to set up multiple user accounts on an ipad?

Personally, the Touch-ID feature is awesome once you have it. No more typing passwords or 4-digit codes. No more having to tell my spouse the password. I just put in her fingerprint in it.

Plus added multiple prints for myself from convenient angles in which occur when I'm holding my iphone different ways.

It's way convenient. I have no idea why anyone wouldn't want this feature. Even with the feature on, you can still use a password or passcode.

I wouldn't mind multi-user access to the iPad/iPhone as well. However, I think this would hurt Apple sales a bit. If you can share an iPad, why buy another one? I'm sure that's their thinking.

If the gold had been available when I'd bought my 5 last month I think I would have gone for it for sure. I admit it's a little feminine, but I just think the finish is gorgeous! And I'm not ashamed of my feminine side :D

Releasing a new mini without retina makes zero sense. Especially since there is not a product in the line-up from the iPod Touch to the iPad that is not retina, except the iPad Mini. I'm not saying they will release it with retina but I can't understand the rationale if they don't

All I want for Christmas is a retina iPad Mini 32GB LTE space gray with Touch ID and A7/A7X chip

But the mini and the nano didn't replace the classic iPod even though they both went on to sell way more than the classic ever did. And I guarantee you part of the decline in Apple's Mac sales is due to people buying iPads instead.

iPod touch is retina, all the iPhone models are retina. There is no legitimate argument for keeping the iPad mini non-retina. And if Apple does it just to protect full size iPad sales then Tim Cook really is an idiot. But I don't see them doing it.
