Sorry to be off topic, but two days after Jobs resigns as CEO, AAPL is kicking butt (passing XOM to become most valuable company)!

Nope, that happened before he resigned. Look in the archives here. They actually dropped 5% right after and then recovered. So, right before resignment: Top, then 5% down and 2nd, then back to top.

A4 may not be cheaper. Yes, if a company was selling it, they would charge less for it than an A5. However, this is Apple's chip. They need to pay for the mask sets for A5, which is very expensive, but they need to spend that money whether 4S uses A5 or not. Then, Apple is only left with per chip costs due to wafers and packaging. It is quite possible that the overall costs could be lower once you include the advantages of incorporating more functions inside one package rather than over more components and the increasing volume. It may also make it easier for software development if A5 is the only processor.

Of course, even at similar costs, Apple could stick with A4 for its entry level model as a differentiator to persuade people to pay up for the "better" iPhone. Apple usually does not emphasize the geeky stuff such as CPUs all that much, so I don't know if that would be a big deal for Apple's marketing team.

Everyone seems very confident that there is going to be 2 versions of the iPhone?

How sure are we?

All the parts leaks point to an iPhone 4S Worldphone. The only notable iP5 rumor was a case leak with tapered sides, but who is to say that is not the new iPod Touch, possibly with 3G added now?

Do you remember how pissy Steve was about 3 years ago or so when he noted Qualcomm could not get the worldphone chips die-shrunk in time for Steve's plans? It has taken this long. It reminded me of the IBM failure to achieve 3 Ghz on Power PC. More pissy Steve. Patience may be a virtue, but is not a characteristic. :D

Ah, either way - I'm a very happy man.

Sorry to hear Popeye206. Solar stock over AAPL...?

The A5 should pay for itself (in A5 devices). Apple has $70B. It isn't like they can't wait a year for something to pay for more than itself back. Right now, the A4 is cheaper. Primarily because it is already paid for (or very close to it). As you point out the A5 isn't. However, eventually the A5 is going to get put into everything, including Touch. There is plenty of time for the A5 to pay for itself and even rack up enough seed money for A6 production costs.

i think and am 90% sure we are only going to see an iPhone 4s with A5 chip and 2 times the power of the 4 and 64 gig option.. the "cheaper phone will be the current iphone 4 with 8 gig an 16 gig and no more 32 gig model..

I get the sinking feeling that we're all going to be bitterly disappointed very soon with the new iPhone..

iPhone 4S
- Same form factor with tweaked antenna
- A5 CPU
- GSM / CDMA
- 64Gb option

..and that's our lot.

While I planned to skip this revision since I think my i4 works great (minus very minor cosmetic issues due to me), if there is a bigger screen, then I'll reconsider.

as long as the phone is a redesign i'm buying, but i wont buy an ip4 clone

The A5 is a significantly larger chip than the A4 because of its extra CPU and GPU portions. However Apple also wants to move the platform on rather than having another 3GS hanging around dragging everybody down.

Unless Apple has migrated the A5 design to TSMC's 40nm process (28nm isn't ready yet, that's for the A6) - that would shrink the chip and potentially drop power consumption. However I expect that it is still made on Samsung's 45nm process.

It may just be simpler for Apple to move to an all A5 platform. An iPhone 4S at $99 (subs.), iPhone 5 16GB at $199 (subs.) and iPhone 5 64GB at $299 (subs.).

Based on the leaks so far, my guess is that the iPhone 5 will have:

- same design as iPhone 4
- an A5 processor
- an 8 megapixel camera
- a slightly redesigned antenna
- GSM/CDMA capability
- possibly more RAM
- possibly a 64GB option

I doubt it will be called anything other than "iPhone 5" since iPhone 4S doesn't even make sense, if you think about it. I suppose there's a slight chance that Apple could argue HSPA+ is 4G and call it the iPhone 4G, but I doubt it since it would confuse consumers (many of whom already call the iPhone 4 "4G").

Somewhere down the line we'll probably see a cheaper version of the iPhone 4 with 8GB and perhaps cheaper components that could be sold at a lower cost out of contract. I highly doubt that will be called "4S" either, since (again) it makes no sense. Not sure where these name rumors came from.

So the iPhone 4S may actually be the next gen iPhone. I still think the iPhone 4 is the best looking smartphone on the market and after two years of plastic 3G/3GS it still feels fresh. However I get why people want a new design.

Here's an interesting factiod:

Wintek is a Taiwan-based electronic-component maker, with operations in China and India. The firm supplies touch screens for Apple’s iPhones.

The company has been facing pressure on the pricing front. According to a report last week from Digitimes, Wintek has received touch screen orders from Apple at prices nearly 50 percent lower than previous shipments, even as volumes have increased significantly for the third quarter.

This looks to be iPhone 4S Worldphone news not rumor. BTW the 3GS is the #2 selling smartphone by volume. 4 is #1. Calling the new phone 4S is sensible from a marketing perspective.

I'd love to see a new design and a larger screen (my biggest wish). But it's not looking very likely.

iPhone 5 will be a 3GS-style upgrade, I'm betting.

We haven't seen a single part for a mythical re-designed iPhone 5. I think it's time to just accept we're getting the same design on a new phone with a marginal processor enhancement and camera upgrade.

Google must be grinning right now -- it's taken Apple 15 months to update the iPhone and they've done absolutely nothing to bring into competition with the top of the line offering from Android.

The slogan for this one should be "This would've changed everything if we released it a year ago."

Why can't you label the damn photos so we can understand which is which?

Maybe Apple have been tought a lesson and have been doing a better job at keeping a new product secret?

Just because the public hasnt seen any new part of the new iPhone doesnt mean there is no redesigned iPhone 5.

Google is surely grinning yeah, about iPhone being the best selling device. That sure makes them smile. Infact, it made them smile so much, they bought Motorola for 12 billion, just incase, you never know right?

iPhone 5 is gonna kick ass, and not just with a marginal upgrade.

You don't know whether A4 is cheaper per package once the initial costs of development and masks are taken out. "Paying for itself" is a misleading concept here. It is just a matter of simple algebra. How much does it cost to produce every phone with A5 or a combination of A4 and A5 during this model year? The fixed costs (R&D, masks etc.) are spent no matter how many of each gets produced this year, that money is water under the bridge. Math does not change at all whether Apple lost money spent on development of A4 up to now or not. What matters is what happens from now on.

Well they added an S before, what sense did that make?
