What about...

Not to dig up old rumors... (but isn't that what this site is about? :D)

What if expanding your universe was about the ability to deploy applications in windows (I believe they used to refer to it as Yellow Box). This could attract more developers to the platform since you could write once and deploy for both platforms....

Just thought I'd stir the pot a little. ;) :D

i could almost see that this time, revering to "universe" as "universal"

expand your universal app?

That would be awesome ... the gaming implications alone would be mind-blowing.

Err.. Java already IS a core part of Mac OS X (note the lowercase "c"). It certainly doesn't deserve "Core" status (like Core Image, Core Audio, etc.), though.

Right, but a direct OS X port of PLG would be failing to utilize better technologies and have the whole UI running off a Java-based program that's clunky as hell. E.g. flipping windows would mean every window would be running directly off java.

I always presumed PLG was more of a conceptual development to experiment with working in a 3d environment rather than a serious attempt at a replacement GUI.

As i say, we can taker some cool ideas from it (flippy windows in Dashboard, etc.) but porting the whole project into OS X would be crazy.

I'm calling it:

OS XI will be named after planets or something with astronomy.

When are people going to realise that OS 11 will almost certainly not come until 10.9 has been and gone? We may get there before 10.9, but certainly you could be looking at least 5 years away already.

However, I did always like the idea of astronomy related names when OS 11 did come around. OS 11.0 Neptune, 11.1 Betelgeuse and so on.

And finally, yes, I do think once they get around to OS 11, the X will be dropped. It's just one of those natural cycles companies go through. We'll probably go black and through a few other changes in appearance before returning to Aqua and/or Platinum. It's almost inevitable.

Anyone yhink apple is kicking themselves in the teeth a bit here?
leopard is really cool, it does this and this and this and you cant live with out it. All that buzz, but its not ready! Ouch. If i was apple i would downlplay te leopard slightly and open iphone to developers, and throw in a product announcement to take attention away from the nonexistant leopard.

Except that this is a developer's conference, and everyone attending will be getting a copy of Leopard (Beta). So it's hardly "nonexistent" to the thousands of attendees.

Embedded windows option?

What do you think about the possibility of having the option to have Windows embeded into Leopard? Perhaps one could get Leopard alone for X dollars or Leopard with full windows functionality (? Vista) for X + $100. For those of us who need windows to run some work applications (VPN) this would be an ideal solution. I would rather have it embedded (and secure) than to have to install it myself and worry about updating it regularly (service packs, etc). Basically, what if the recent cozy Jobs/Gates session signalled a degree of partnership coming?

we can only dream... hell i would just like SLI support for mac... but as my friend told me today, he'd like actual flawless SLI on his PC

EDIT: just thought about it, bringing any sort of windows software compatiblity into OSX would completly compremmise the integrebilty of the opperating system... so prolly best to hope they don't mesh windows into my mac... bootcamp/parallels is enough for most people i believe... but when i got my macpro i decided to abandon windows and well, can't say i miss it

all though I think I'm getting bored with my mac... I don't have to keep fixing things.

There's more to this "spaces"

Definitely true that virtual desktops are not a new concept. I've been using them for at least a decade and I highly doubt the concept was brand new at that point.

From the day this was demo-ed I thought, "there has to be more to this..."

I suspect "spaces" is more like a safe or virtualised OS enviroment perhaps like Solaris' containers but where applications can move from one environment to the next. -sort of like how time machine slickens what is (we all suspect) zfs.

The again it's probably just a virtual desktops. woot!

Apple is really pushing the idea of "Space". The time machine theme, universe theme, and of course spaces.

I think we could probably see a lot more 3D GUI.

Anybody think that the 'expand your universe' banner could be the new finder?

I.e. Apps all over like stars and planets and you probably click and drag to move them around to find what you want then click the app to open?

Just a thought although its not very workflow efficient unless spotlight search is a big part of it.

:)

Yes, I agree with the point you were trying to make. I just wanted to point out something that you may have missed. ;)

...or maybe "coverflow" type option for the finder.

You're getting close..The finder will use coverflow.Be integrated with the desktop and quicklook.Quicklook is the old finder "window"..Wheras the desktop is the new finder.
