Can't fathom why you wouldn't be able to downgrade and this is the first I've heard of it.

You can't downgrade in place, if that's what you mean. You'd have to do a clean install of SL.

I'm not sure why, but booting off a retail copy of SL doesn't work from what I've read. This is in regards to iMacs that came preinstalled with Lion.

Are you using the boot manager in the prefpane Startup Disk utility? Maybe try holding down "C" or "D" or whatever it is with the disk in on startup before the OS loads? I know this is stating the obvious just really surprised that one can't do this.

Isn't it if it shipped with Lion, you can't downgrade. But if you upgraded to Lion from SL, you can go back?

Right...the Apple Genius Bar guys would have to wipe the drive and install SL...one days work and you have what you want. Why wouldn't you do that?

A few people, over at Apple Discussions, have tried installing SL on their Lion iMacs and couldn't. For some reason, you can't boot off a retail copy.

Even the most recently printed SL discs won't have the correct drivers for the 2011 iMacs.

I am surprised that Apple let Lion ship with this bug in it. They knew it existed before Lion was released, because myself and other developers had reported it. I'd have to think that it will be fixed in 10.7.1 though.

2011 iMacs were already out when Lion was released. No new iMac models accompanied its release. So where is the hardware difference that requires different drivers?

When I had my early 11' MBP, the SL disks stated "install disk early 2011 MBP" on it.

My 2011 iMac disks says "Mac OS version 10.6.6 - Disc version 1.0". Dunno why you wouldn't be able to "downgrade" to SL via an install disk from a mid 2011 iMac, regardless if it shipped with lion or not. Hardware is the same..

We're not talking about Lion. We are saying that retail Snow Leopard discs will not work with 2011 iMacs, and the only reason that would be the case is if they don't include all of the correct drivers, which the version of Snow Leopard included with slightly older 2011 iMac does (i.e. prior to the release of Lion). So yes, any 2011 iMac-specific Snow Leopard install DVD should work on 2011 iMacs even if they came with Lion.

Correct, 2011 iMacs came with 10.6.6 or higher, which had the correct drivers for 2011 iMacs. If you buy a retail copy of Snow Leopard it is 10.6.3, it will not boot.

I slept my 2010 Air with Lion installed without any problems. It woke up normally. The problem might be caused by the communication between the OS and the firmware of the graphical card. If this is true, it is then a shame on Apple for not fully testing the compatibility of its own hardware with its new OS.

I can't help but think that the people on this thread telling the OP to 'shut up' and 'quit yer bitchin' about his legitimate problem on his top of the line iMac would be hooting and hollering if the same thing happened right after a new Windows release.

Seems that you have installed some third party utilities that deal with the system. WHy don't you try a new clean account without the plugings?

I tried 2 clean Lion installs without installing 3rd party apps and still had the same issues.

It's all good, I returned it and will wait until Lion has some of its bugs fixed. I'll just play with my hackintosh til then, which ironically is less buggy... lol.

Apologies. Missed one little word, 'retail'. :)

TBH you should just downgrade to SL for the time being if this is causing that big of a problem. Then wait until they release 10.7.1 and then update to lion again.

People need to understand that with an new OS there will be problems, regardless if it is apple or not.

I would except I can't. The iMac came with Lion and I can't use a retail copy of Snow Leopard.

Same here!

Haha! Yes same here. After agonising for literally years, I finally have made the jump to mac. I purchased a 5 mth old air with Lion installed.

Whilst I haven't had the horrendous problems related here, what I have experienced is that my mac-using friends upon whom I relied to steer me throughout the learning curve haven't got Lion yet and are scratching their heads like me! Lol!

Anyway. Lovely machine and I hope mac will sort out the glitches soon.

That's what I've been saying. Apple is still ultimately a company that is susceptible to mistakes. Some are more forgiving than others. This one certainly edging toward the unforgivable, but part of the reasons we're so mad at Apple is our own hype and elevation of Apple products, and of Apple's own attempt at selling and branding "perfection" (e.g., "it just works" anyone?)

Doesn't matter, you should not let the hype get to you. Early adopters of tech or software always suffer in the beginning. Microsoft hyped vista to high heaven, but in the beginning it was terrible, after a couple of updates it ran just fine.

Im sorry but I do not feel bad for anyone that goes out and buys the newest tech or program, and then the program or tech has bugs/glitches/problems. Its your responsibility to do the research and not just blindly buy something.

I'm usually the first to defend Apple, but I feel like a bug like this is serious enough that Lion shouldn't have shipped with it.

Apple better come out with a fix before my 14 days or I'm returning this and will think again about paying a premium for a PC with an Apple logo. When I switched to Windows Vista I didn't even have any problems close to this.

On the flip side, I had nothing but issues with Windows, switched to Apple and bingo all my troubles gone.
