I feel the OPs pain. I used to be a Mac hater but the iPad and AppleTV sucked me in so I bit the bullet and spent 5x what I've EVER spent on a PC only to get an email from Apple saying my hard drive might fail. My computer is now gone for a week and I'm starting to see pics on the forums of people who's brand new iMacs were badly scratched or have dust behind the glass after this repair.

I didn't have lion long enough to deal with the bugs. I love my iMac but to all the apple people who make fun of people "putting up" with Windows... You guys are a riot (or delusional).

Actually if you think that everyone is like this it is you who are delusional. There is so much animosity towards Mac users for no reason its unbelievable. I had a guy scream in my face at work that I "sucked Steve Job's d***" simply because I had apple equipment on my desk. If you think I'm wrong go look at the engadget or Gizmodo forums and you will see all this insane hate for no reason.

That being said, computers have issues. A brand new release of an OS is always going to have bugs undetectable in the betas, its just how software development is. This is why people recommend waiting for a few releases.

Luckily for Apple users Apple is usually very fast at these fixes so its generally only a few weeks wait between updates up until roughly the .4 release of an OS.

As for the OP's computer, it looks like a bit more than a software issue, that looks just like a bad vid card. It happens regardless of manufacturer. If it were me I'd simply ask for an exchange which you are entitled to since you are within the return period.

As for the seagate hard drive issues, blame seagate. Every PC manufacturer potentially using the same drives is going to have the same exact issue, but may not even recall them depending on the manufacturer. Be glad Apple gave the heads up and is replacing the drives.

People are just so insanely quick to go crazy over little issues. Work in IT a day and you will see stuff like this, regardless of OS, hardware manufacturer or software manufacturer, is completely normal.

I actually do work in IT... And everything you say is true... But I also just feel like I got incredibly bad luck... I've never had a piece of CE get "recalled" on me ever... And after a decade of poking fun at Mac people I finally splurge and either have to take it in or risk data loss (yes I back up religiously but the way I understamd this issue the drive could get corrupt and I could start overwriting my backups with bad data... So I really felt like I had no choice.)

And yes I know apple users are made fun of. 1) I used to be on the other side of those jokes and 2) as the owner of two iPads, two apple tvs, two iPhones, an iPod, an iMac, and a MBP, I catch plenty of **** from windows and android users... But thinking back to those "I'm a Mac" commercials making fun of windows when it went through the Vista growing pains has me wincing a little bit considering what I'm going through. I actually am sure Apple will do me right but I'm without my computer right now and terrified that I'm going to have to confront a store manager over scratched casing or dust under the screen like I've seen posted here.

Doctor says... "If it hurts, then don't do it". If computer hangs after its goes to sleep, then do NOT put it to sleep...

On the more serious side....

Sounds like a known problem (with Lion and some versions of iMacs). Since Apple is aware of it and its such large scale, I bet it will be fixed. And, fixed soon. Until a fix is known (and proven), don't allow your iMac to sleep. Or, return the iMac and get a "new" replacement in Oct (????), when this fix is known and proven.

It really is that simple....

If wondering... I bought my mid-2010 iMac when the brightness button was turned all the way up and its screen was still too dark. It was a wide scale / known problem as well. I had a choice to return my iMac within 14 days (get my money back) or "ride it out". Sure enough, 3 weeks later, a new video patch was available. I waited 2 more weeks for others to trial it first. Then, I applied this video patch to my iMac. Today, all is great. Glad I hung on and road that storm out....

It's not just sleep now. I have sleep turned off and if I play a HD video I get what is in the pic I posted.

I'm having those graphical screw ups on my computer ever since I jumped to Lion. It's seriously annoying.

While some people will deny that this is true, one should avoid buying into a new OS upgrade on the first run, unless one has a partitioned drive and puts the new one with the old one.

When I wanted to be the newest on the block I always partitioned my hard drive and put one system in one and one in the other while I waited for the new one to congeal.

Its only prudent. One time I did that there were no issues and and moved in almost immediately; another time there were and I had to wait about a month for the second upgrade to get them fixed.

Jesus ****, I don't understand this constant bitching. You're probably mature enough to deal with this yourself- it's a well known graphical issue. Either it gets fixed in the next update or it doesn't. If it does, that's good for you and all the others. If it doesn't, then you either set your Mac so it doesn't sleep/downgrade to SL or you return your Mac and go buy a windows machine. Sitting here whining and saying "You hope it get's fixed in the next update" isn't going to solve your problem.

So glad I held off the lemming run into Lion OS :D
Maybe in six months when they've squashed all the bugs, then the bugs from squishing the earlier bugs, I'll go Lion.

Until then I'm perfectly happy with Snow Leopard.

It's people like you that makes me want to return this stupid thing.

I like my iMac and Air (both 2011), and switching to Apple makes sense to me for personal reasons I won't digress into, however, a lot of my preliminary "enchantment" with Apple (thanks to fanboysim, thanks to Apple's own marketing e.g., "it just works," thanks to the premium pricing, the branding, etc.) has lost a bit of its luster.

Despite having some amazing ideas here and there over the competition, Apple, at the end of the day is more or less similar to anything else you get. The one major difference that Apple has over the competition is its customer service, but I'm speaking about their products themselves. They'll have problems both hardware-wise and software-wise. It's not perfect, and I think fanboys actually do Apple disservice by raising the hype of Apple products.

(I'm discovering the same thing with a recently acquired iPhone 4, for e.g., typing on an iPhone 4 is far less responsive than say typing on a Nexus S and Google's stock keyboard. The iPhone 4 misses a lot of pressed keys).

Apple sells perfection -- the idea, not necessarily the products. And we eat it up to varying degrees of satisfaction.

To get back to the point of the thread though: yes, Apple needs to release .1 update to fix this video problem soon. The OP is right to feel sleighted consider the price he dropped. Granted, new operating systems often have bugs in its initial release, but this particular one with the video is awfully nasty -- no kernal panic to induce auto-restart, nothing is accessible, it has to be power-buttoned restarted, it affects all types of videos (can't blame Flash anymore); it's a crazy bug. Apple shouldn't have released Lion before this was fixed, especially considering they knew about it during Lion-beta testing.

Hopefully .1 comes soon.

To the OP: you have a decision to make, and only you can make it. Either hold out until the bug fix comes, or return the product (you can always visit it again when you feel Lion is updated and ready).

People unfamiliar with logistics always believe that others will be able to perform at levels and provide fixes for things at levels and speed which they themselves have no clue about doing.

Making updates for a system as complicated as OS 10.7 is not something you do in an afternoon. One must be sure that the cure doesn't cause an even bigger problem.

These are issues that I'm sure Apple is working on. But no one can honestly expect a full .1 upgrade in 7 days, or at least anyone who knows how these things work.

I ordered it right around the switch and I was hoping for it to come with SL since the Lion upgrade would have been free. So either I return it now and wait til the issues are settled or wait without sleep or even buy a copy of SL and install that.

You could check with your local store to see if they have a SL machine in stock still, otherwise I thought I'd point out that since it came with Lion, you probably won't be able to downgrade to SL.

I'm sorry your experience isn't going so hot right now, while I agree it is a bad issue and should have been addressed before launch, Apple does really want happy customers.

I hope for everyone's sake the bug is found and patched ASAP.

Stores don't carry the maxed out iMacs, unfortunately. Yeah, even if I buy a copy of SL, I realized I can't downgrade. Now that I have sleep turned off, I'm having problems still.

I'm thinking of returning it and waiting for issues to be fixed. I would get an iMac with SL but I don't think the BTOs will come with them anymore. Will Apple make me pay for return shipping? I figure they should cover the cost. It's not that I don't like it, it's just I can't use it.

Man, the Sausage King of Chicago is grumpy!

Nonetheless, I think the OP has made it clear that he'll wait for the next update which will hopefully fix the issue or return it. There's no need to jump on him about it. What I find hilarious is posts like the one from "imahawki". Just because a piece of CE has never been recalled, doesn't mean dozens of them shouldn't have been.

My advice to both the OP and "imahawki" is to reserve judgment. Get your issues ironed out and enjoy your new iMacs. Use OSX for a few months, then hop onto a Windows machine. I think then you'll finally understand what everyone here already knows.

Okay...if they can't fix it right now...take it back and ask for a Snow Leopard installed iMac. It's not like they can't do that.

Have you tried not playing videos?

LOL, I'm also not turning it on anymore. ;)

Anyway, I called Apple and I'm in the middle of erasing and reinstalling Lion so I can pack it up and drop it off at Fedex.

Meanwhile, I'll wait for Apple to fix this and hopefully order another iMac. Plus, I had a slight defect on the front silver bezel and had some yellowing and a faint gray line towards the bottom of the screen. I was willing to overlook those defects because I'm hardly going to use the iMac with a white or gray background, but not being able too use it is just silly.

Abe, this sucks man. I have a mid 2011 iMac base model, and haven't experienced any problems with Lion. When I downloaded Lion, I reformatted the drive, installed SL and then Lion. I dunno if that even did anything to cause me not to have problems, but for some reasons I haven't experienced anything..

Yeah, if I could have downgraded to SL, I would have done that. I'll just wait til the next update and see if that fixes things. I talked to a Senior Advisor and he told me he would keep me up to date with what I sent in with the Capture Data software and any Lion updates. In the meantime, I didn't want a $3k just sitting on my desk.

If you needed a copy of SL, I could've let you borrow it to see if it helps, although Apple would/should do the same if you live close to an Apple Store.

Apparently you can't downgrade. Just as long as I hear that people's sleep/video problems have been fixed, I'll quickly order another one.

Hmm, i have never heard of not being able to downgrade on the new iMacs. That sucks if true

Can't fathom why you wouldn't be able to downgrade and this is the first I've heard of it.

You can't downgrade in place, if that's what you mean. You'd have to do a clean install of SL.
