Oh! I've assumed this was a common thing outside of Germany and the Netherlands! It's beer mixed with lemon juice. It's often around 2-3% in alcohol and is perfect as a refreshment after a warm day of cycling (hence the name)

It's basically the German (Central European) variant of the British Shandy (not the Dutch one).

About 50/50 Beer and limonade (most often fizzy, but juices can also be used).

A shandy, in other words,

They can be wonderful in summer, when served with a light lager, especially in the afternoon when anything stronger would leave you comatose, or, at the very least, somewhat sleepy.

Went to the Achelse Kluis abbey for the first time since they held a christmas market last year and it just so happened that they've released some new beers!
A 'singel' a 'rouge' (kriek, so with cherries) and a grand cru.

This one is pretty light, 5,3% and it's pretty floral.

I ofcourse also had a 12km hike through the national park surrounding the area ;)

I’ve always thought Radler to be stronger than a shandy. The ones I’ve seen in Greece come in at 4% or so but that extra little bit of flavour does make them refreshing.

Wonderful.

Visiting the brewery must have been an amazing experience - I'm both envious, and delighted for you.

Needless to say, the beer looks divinely delicious, and I am most impressed by the glass; while I do have quite a collection of Belgian beer glassware (Trappistes Rochefort, St Bernardus, Achouffe, Chimay, Westmalle), this is a glass (and indeed, a beer) that I never never laid eyes on, let alone sipped, sampled or savoured.

Do enjoy.

I've actually never visited the brewery part of the abbey itself yet. There are probably tours available but then I'd have to visit by bicycle since driving home after taste testing their (heavy!) beers is not a bright idea ;)

However, they have a nice abbey store, which also sells cheeses made by them and other catholic related parafernalia.

It's still close enough to where I live for casual visits, which is a very precious thing to have. Been there on bicycle before, it's about 35km away from me give or take.

Agreed.

You have my complete sympathy, and agreed, attempting to balance, control, direct and steer a bicycle while cheerfully inebriated presents its own set of challenges (and comprises some happy undergrad memories.....)

That sounds wonderful; I would imagine that their cheese is also excellent (I recall having had Chimay cheese - a beer washed rind cheese, and it was absolutely delicious).
