I really cannot wait for this. Jailbroke my 4S early last year but only for a few months, then returned to stock when a new update came out (5.1 I think).

But now, I'm pretty damn excited to jailbreak again, even if only for a few tweaks. It'll be fun.

Hope it comes earlier than Sunday

To be safe, you always shut do a full restore (I even like to DFU mode, but probably not necessary) before jailbreaking. Just ensures you have a "clean" system.

You don't want to screw things up and have to restore only to find you can't restore to 6.1, but 6.1.1 or an update that patched the jailbreak.

Do the full restore now or on Sunday (hopefully) when we JB?

I mean, I doubt much will change on your phone between now and Sunday, so to be safe I would do it now.

That way you can also save blobs.

OK Cool. So I

1-download 6.1 on my comp
2-Backup my phone
3-Restore from backup

Is this correct? Thanks

so some people are updating and others are restoring. Is a 2-month old i5 worth restoring or is doing an update enough? Restoring a phone means I'd have to set up everything again, I'd probably lose my text messages, my 50+ app settings, etc.:(

Nope you won't loose anything, first you make a regular content backup of your IP5, after that is done, do a firmware restore, after that restore the content backup and all is back again

This is what the jailbreak developers are recommending.

I agree. that does sound very confusing.

If coming from something lower than 6.1, wouldn't you just want to:

  1. save your pre-6.1 blobs (if necessary)
  2. download 6.1 to your machine
  3. update your iPhone to 6.1
  4. save your 6.1 blobs
  5. wait for jailbreak
  6. jailbreak
  7. save your jailbroken 6.1 blobs (if necessary)

That sounds like what should be done, unless I'm missing something..

That's what I did,now i still have to wait another hour while restore is in progress..

Nope:

1 backup phone
2 download 6.1 or hit update
3 restore the backup from 1

your missing a backup from your current state and content

Fair enough.. So you would need a backup prior to the update.

But why the restore back to it before the update to 6.1?

BL.

still missing the sequence:

1 backup your content in tunes
2 firmware restore to 6.1
3 restore your content backup from 1

well yeah, updating is so much easier and less time consuming than restoring. Having to manually install 50+ apps again, one by one...

and what are blobs? isn't doing a backup enough?

blobs are used to downgrade or restore to 6.1 if 6.1.x comes out if necessary.

at the moment the downgrade does not work, they'll have to find a workaround, but ALWAYS save your blobs/SHSH/hashes (they are the same)
