I really don't get the anger towards the op here. Nobody can possibly blame him for not wanting to hear a loud passenger on a bus and he went here to vent. What's the big deal?

I don't get it either. A lot of the responders are probably just your typical internet posters, who just like stirring things up, because they feel tough behind their computer screen. I can name at least one of the responders who just said to ignore this noise, who can't even ignore the noise of this site. It's beyond laughable.

Rude people suck, rights or no rights. Oh, and equal rights doesn't give one the right to say anything they want. Screaming "fire" when there's no fire in a theater is just one example.

Oh, and I can't see your downvotes, so have fun. :)

I'm so vain I probably think this post is about me. :D

Christ, you can't say a thing on these forums without getting pounced on from a great height!!

The OP was expressing his opinion in general, not going on about anyone on here, and yet the wolves start circling! Wow, you all must be so proud. And to use the word 'bully' in this context is quite simply ridiculous!

Flame on...

I agree, these things bother us all, and sometimes having a vent and a talk about it is better than ignoring them and wishing them away.

I'm with the OP 100% and that's why I'm not a big people's person, they are either loud or inconsiderate towards others.

yes. I think the people who post "people should chill" should look in the mirror. They are getting worked up over a conversation that they don't want to have. Weird. But on topic:

Some people here wrote stuff like: why don't we man up and just say please be quiet. Because, in my experience, it just makes it worse. People just get louder or yell back and who needs that?

Who said we're worked up, and who said we don't want to discuss it? I'm as eager as you are to weigh in with my opinion; just because it's different from yours doesn't mean I'm angry about it, or that I don't wish to discuss it.

That's unfortunate - now that sort of behavior would bother me.

.

But I wasn't talking about you....

I am a loud motormouth. Because I read this thread, tomorrow I will try extra hard to be louder and run the motor at redline on my jaw. I will annoy people. When they ask why I'm suddenly 200% more annoying, I will tell them it was the OP's fault and will instruct them to take their grievances to him.

Way to have ruined a bunch of nice people's Friday vrDrew. ;)

People on the trains here will tell off someone who is being very noisy. Eg, loud phone conversation, music playing too loudly, etc. It's not the exception, it is the rule. Have the music going too loudly, or have a loud phone conversation or similar, and you will get told off for it! It just depends if you'll have one or two people annoyed, or the whole carriage will yell at you.

Although there are no written rules, there is an unwritten etiquette that dictates that you remain quiet on public transport, more specifically the morning/evening peak-hour trains with lots of tired people on them.

The rail-operator has worked this out and is now rolling out quiet-carriages on certain services. :D

I also think saying something to loud people is rarely worth the hassle. People who are so inconsiderate usually have no qualms being completely combative. I welcome all tough-talkers to ahead and try to tell a group of 7 or 8 loud, hateful, over-entitled tweenagers with nothing to lose to quiet down. Let me know how that goes.

Generally I just roll my eyes and carry on with what I'm doing without much angst over it but sometimes I really wish I could inflict:

What ever happened to common courtesy?

Everyone also has a right to personal privacy. Public streets do not give you a right to scream off the top of your lungs for no good reason. I don't want to hear your private conversation anymore than the person on the other end of the line wants the public hearing it.

There's no such thing as personal privacy in a public place, thats why we have a (supposedly) free press in the western world

And whilst we're at it:- Emergency vehicles, rushing around with your engines flairing and your sirens wailing away. **** will you? Some of us are trying to pretend our urban lives actually occur out in the wilderness!!!

Indeed. My mother and step father went to a movie, and the group in front of them was texting. My mother asked them if they could turn their phones off, and one of them replied basically "F you bitch. Mind your own business." Luckily, my step father is quite large and a little crazy, and I think he convinced them pretty quickly to turn them off. But the whole thing just ruined the movie for everyone involved.

"tough-talkers"

The key is to be polite and pleasant, but firm. (Too many people think these are mutually exclusive!) If you go in with guns blazing, of course they're going to fight back.

Also, if it's a situation like the OP is describing, you might be the only one with the courage to approach them, but you're probably speaking on behalf of the entire crowd.

And if they're rude or unpleasant even after you've asked politely, then you can either say "Hey, I tried" and live with it, or you could, if the situation warrants, escalate it (e.g. complain to theater management).

But I am not worked up and who said I didn't want to have the conversation? Next time just use my name and quote me, man up. If you want to discuss it we can but you clearly comment on things you don't want to truly discuss yourself. ;)

So yes, man up ... ask someone to be quiet. If not delivered with the amount of rudeness the OP exhibits then I bet it will work just fine. I've done it countless times. If your experience is that it makes it worse then I can lend you the aforementioned mirror you recommended that I look in and you can reevaluate how you come at people in public. If kindly asking someone to tone it down escalates then I'd question my delivery. If you're polite and calm and things escalate then chances are you won't win ... walk away if you can and if not, it won't kill you to have to deal with it for a short while (hopefully). It's simple.

To remind you, if you want to "speak" to me then do so. Don't just passive aggressively point out something I did and expect fair results.

I'm was talking about multiple posters. I'm not going to quote a dozen posts, especially when I'm using a phone.

I meant "tough-talkers" in the sense of people sitting behind a keyboard telling others what they should say/do.

I am quite capable of sussing out a situation for how best to handle it. But by all means, I hope everyone continues to use this internet thread to post about what impeccable social skills they have.

Yes, that is what the OP and everyone who agrees wants. You hit the nail right on the head. 8 ball, corner pocket. You shot and scored.

Here, you can borrow this if you need help interpreting the above:

:D

I don't really get this whole "MR is so mean nowadays" and the more general "what happened to good manners". It's not as if the situation is carved in stone or out of our hands. We are all part of our surroundings and if we want nice people - we should be nice people. That's all it takes, we don't have to convince anyone - just be polite and spread the love. :)

Some guy tried that, more than a few years ago.

Unfortunately his 'revolution' was high-jacked, as so many have been since.
