It has nothing to do with the OP's situation. Any Applecare customer, at anytime during the Applecare period, for any reason, can request a pro-rated refund for the remaining time.

From the Applecare terms and conditions :
5. Cancellation
You may cancel this Plan at any time for any reason. If you decide to cancel either call Apple at the telephone number below, or send or fax written notice with your Plan Agreement Number to AppleCare Administration, P.O. Box 149125, Austin, TX 78714-9125, U.S. (fax number 512- 6748125). A copy of the Planʼs original proof of purchase must accompany your notice. Unless local law provides otherwise, if you cancel within thirty (30) days of your Planʼs purchase, or receipt of these Terms and Conditions, whichever occurs later, you will receive a full refund less the value of any service provided under the Plan. If you cancel more than thirty (30) days after your receipt of this Plan, you will receive a pro rata refund of the original purchase price, based on the percentage of unexpired Coverage Period, less (a) a cancellation fee of twenty-five ($25 USD) dollars or ten
percent (10%) of the pro-rata amount, whichever is less, and (b) the value of any service provided to you under the Plan. Unless applicable local law provides otherwise, Apple may cancel this Plan if service parts for the Covered Equipment become unavailable, upon thirty (30) daysʼ prior written notice. If Apple cancels this Plan, you will receive a pro-rata refund for the Planʼs unexpired term.

OP - just call Applecare and get your pro-rated refund. YOU ARE NOT OUT ANY MONEY for the applecare.

I was just going to post this up. It helps if you guys actually READ what you are buying. Just cancel it and get your money back....

This reminds me why I do not shell out 300.00 for Apple care while still within my first year. Yikes.
Let it dry and take it to the apple store. They will be more help. Good luck!

Actually you are not out money, just read the post above! You can get a refund.

what that means is when you drop, spill, abuse, void... why shell out an extra couple hundred bucks to void a 3 year warranty when you can just void the 1 year warranty at no extra AppleCare cost.

Good point. I didn't even consider that when I purchased Applecare.

**eta**Okay, I see where you can get a prorated refund of Applecare!

Or... wait until day 364 before you buy it.

No need for paperwork, cancellation, rebates, attorneys... none of this nonsense.

Honestly, I don't understand why folks here insist that it's better to remove $250 from your wallet a full year before it's necessary.

Consumable liquids and electronics. . .

Fix it, or sell it and get a mac mini where you can spill as much water as you want and you just replace a 70$ keyboard
No not quite...

I would recommend NEVER NEVER EVER allowing fluids within a three foot radius of electronic equipment of any type, blackbox, exposed circuitry whatever, NEVER, NEVER,EVER period. Accidents happen, just like human waste happens...

In summer 2007 I violated that rule for about two seconds. The result was a fried motherboard of a 2006 Mac Mini. I spilled a small amount of soda on the keyboard, and before you could say OH S$%^!!!, the image on the the display was a most lovely and incoherent pixelation I ever laid eyes on. Yeah, a real piece o'work it was. Then a black screen and a Mini that would not boot.

In all my thirty plus years experience in the field of electronics test and development, I never allowed ANY liquid any where near electronics. Except in one moment of boneheaded stupidity, that's all it takes folks, a mere heartbeat.

Rule of Thumb...
NO liquids near electronics of any kind at any time for any reason no exceptions.

Life gets in the way.... I can't tell you where I will be or what I will be doing a year from now so for me it is better just to purchase it up front. I have had to cancel it once on a lost device and it was a simple process. No headach needed.

Protip: An Applecare purchase (not just the 1 year warranty) includes a copy of TechToolDeluxe that can be used to diagnose your machine. It isn't as good as the full TechTool (which sucks IMO) but it's better than nothing.

Also, there've been plenty of stories where individuals forgot that they didn't get Applecare, then are scrambling and hoping Apple will toss them a bone.

I know you are correct, but my laptop spends 95% of its time on my lap with me sipping a drink over it quite often. I just pray I don't spill anything, but I'm not going to keep it in a sterile environment either. :)

Tis the reason for home or renters insurance. ;) My renters covers accidental damage.

I spilled a drop (seriously) of water on my new 13inch mac pro that I bought like 1 month ago.
The power went off and the computer is completely dead.

I paid 300+ for the applecare and they say it's not covered and they want me to pay 750+ (plus tax) to fix it.

What should I do? I am seriously gonna cry.

Should I pay 750+ for the repair or should I rather sell and buy a new one? But i already paid 300+ for the apple care and it's a brand new computer and I seriously don't think it's going to do much if i sell and buy a new one.

But, does it really cost that much to repair?

File a claim with your Home owners or renters insurance. They should cover it.

About a month ago, I spilled a whole diet soft drink down my keyboard. It cut off immediately, and was dead, dead, dead. I felt so stupid. I had just taken a prescription pill (for a migraine) and was moving away from my MBP and it just fell out of my hands.

I sent it to Microreplay through ebay, and I'm typing on it now. They were excellent and saved my behind. It wasn't cheap, but it was cheaper than replacing the whole thing.

And yes, lesson learned. No more drinks.

You want my advice? Stop pouring water into your computer. That's all.

I totally understand that ideology however, you could have AppleCare on the 366th day of owning the unit and the same thing could happen then also, you still be out the money... Make no sense that it should matter less the first year, you still end up with a pile of trash...

Best thing is be careful with unit and keep fluids away!!!!!!

It is simply time value of money. Why pay for something now when I can pay for it a year from now with absolutely no reduction in warranty coverage received.

You have two option on my opinion...

1. Sell it and buy refurbished one. It will be cheaper than paying for repair. It might be even it out, but yet you get a laptop with no cosmetic damage and new battery.

2. It cost much to repair because it's apple computer.

3. If there is any chance that you bought a laptop with AMEX, Call AMEX and they will pay for your repair. If you didn't, then you have to fix it on your own.

Also, don't buy apple warranty...

1. Buy it from amazon. It's cheaper.
2. I upgrade my laptop every 3-4 years. It will last. If not, I will just sell it and buy new one.

Extended warranty is a waste of money. Only warranty I ever buy is for my car. Nothing else in this world gets extra warranty.

I never said that OP won't get their money back, I said OP is OOL getting a repair from applecare because they aren't breaching their contract for doing a repair that is accidental...

I don't know why you guys won't buy a clear guard for your keyboard!!!
It may not protect it fully, but sure it will protect it from droplets !!!!!
25.00!!!!!! People!

Think I've seen about 10 posts about "drops" of water or drinks.

Agreed stuff happens. But I am totally addicted to being in front of my computer so if my roommate isn't home, I'm in front of my computer (means when I'm eating, I'm in front of my computer. I don't like eating and not having something to do while I eat).

Which is why instead I just got State Farm to insure my computer for 30 dollars a year *shrug*. Pretty much insures my laptop against everything that's not warranty related (Theft, dropping, water, etc).

And honestly, I have yet to spill any liquid on my laptops (come close a few times). But while I will drink around it, I tend not to have anything completely open like a cup or glass but keep it in a can or bottle (and if plastic bottle, if I'm not drinking out of it, the cap is on all the way). Yeah, the can I cannot do that, but it tends to spill out a lot slower so you get a lot more time to stop it before it gets anywhere (plus I place the can in a place it more likely won't spill right on my laptop). I will say it makes me very nervous though to have a glass of liquid around my computer.

That isn't available to everyone though (atleast not that I know of???). Us washingtonians get a free pass on stuff like this :D
