I would normally agree, but the way the dates slipped were kind of different this year, all pro max models slipped at the exact same time, regardless of color or storage option, this makes me hopeful that they may actually have some inventory. It doesn’t make sense to sell out of everything at once. I’m prepared to wait, but am still a little hopeful.
I honestly don't think they necessarily "sell out" of inventory. This is my non-expert, completely out of my a%& explanation of how I think it probably works. If anyone wants to call me an idiot and correct me on any of this, that's fine:
1. On some pre-planned date every year they switch their main production lines from last year's "new" model to this year's new model. Any previous year models are prioritized by demand in the production line. Things shuffle around, etc.
2. The new configuration runs full blast all the way up until launch day and all the way through when demand starts to peter out a bit just due to seasonal changes that I'm sure Apple has the ability to predict quite accurately.
3. By the time you put in your pre-order, a pre-determined amount of iPhones is already on trucks/planes/ships waiting to go out to customers, with probably plenty more waiting in the wings for constant waves of launch day boxes.
4. Pacing of these shipments is determined by shipping partner bandwidth, not inventory.
The real problem with getting a launch day iPhone these days is that despite pundits' wishes, the iPhone is only getting more and more popular. I sometimes wonder if demand is not outstripping physical inventory but rather number of vehicles available to get that inventory to peoples' houses and into stores.
The iPhone is such a GIGANTIC business all by itself. It's the most successful product in the history of the world. I personally believe iPhone 13/Pro/Max is going to tax the system even more because I'm convinced that this form factor is the iPhone perfected and is going to sell like crazy.
