Damnit. How can he be working on an unlock without a jailbreak?

If there is no unlock exploit already found/reported to Apple, why wouldn't he be working on the most recent baseband?

I don't need the unlock, but I do want it when I go to resell. If the 4S is anything like the 4, I'll have to buy a Gevey Sim and package it when it comes time to sell.

He has a jailbreak, but it can't be legally distributed.

I don't think jailbreaks are the big issue, it's about removing Apples code and have the exploits still work.

Pod2g has a new blog post. Basically, his JB only works of you have a developer account, so it can't be publicly released. Looks like a major setback.

A5 FAQ
How could pod2g have an untethered 4S and dev teams still haven't released tools to achieve this at home ?

The exploit I used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account, and can't be released publicly.
It's the same reason why @MuscleNerd has an iPad 2 tethered jailbreak but couldn't distribute it.
So, we need to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Why A4 version of Corona was easier to release ?

Because a tethered jailbreak is a good way to install Corona!

Why don't you do a tethered jailbreak then ?

A tethered jailbreak also relies on an exploitable vulnerability that we still haven't found yet !

pod2g, release this stuff quick, [your insult here], I've waited enough now.

If I could, I would !

I read that blog post as "disregard my twitter post about the possible week thing" :(. Oh well, good luck pod2g. The community looks to you.

I wish I knew how to jailbreak or if someone would release a guide "if you have a dev account here is how you can easily jailbreak" since you can sign apps and such.

I'd agree with all of that. I'm sure hes still hard at work trying to find a way, but I don't see a public release anytime in the near future.

EDIT: But I'll gladly clutch at any straws, as in p0sixninja's latest tweet:

It's a little confusing at the moment, I think the blog post is talking about why they aren't releasing it this second.

I think that the big step earlier this week may have been the distributable injection method, as pod2g has said all along the kernel exploit is the same for A4/5

Given that the iPad 2 is nearing the end of it's "lifecycle" as the top iPad model, and it's never been jailbroken on iOS 5 (for public release), I think it's looking like the A5 will remain unjailbroken. The iPad 3 is out within months, and will no doubt feature a Quad Core A6 ... so where does the focus go for the likes of pod2G? Continue on the A5 exploit, or look at the A6, which will have it's own band of users moaning/clamouring/demanding a jailbreak for.

The A5 has been in Apple products for almost a year now thanks to the iPad 2 and it was only jailbroken on iOS 4.3.3 was it not? It looks like the combination of the A5 and iOS 5 is stumping the jailbreakers to the point of it being nigh on impossible, and God help them when the A6 is released.

Yes, god help them, because I swear, I will never buy another Apple iOS product until a jailbreak is released. Surely the masses will continue blindly buying, but if Apple rests on their laurels, Android will continue to pickup steam and not only be the most popular, but also the top choice for smartphones. I love my 4S hardware wise, but my 4 on 4.3.3 with all of my jailbreak tweaks was about 10x better of an experience.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Yikes.

I wish some of those Android devs knew how to work on ios too. Looking on the XDA forums, it's nothing but Android devs. They are goooood.

A6 and iOS 6 is probably going to be hell for the Dev Team.

See, I love the jailbreak tweaks like FakeClockUp and Zephyr, but I always end up restoring to stock because I'm **** scared that my iPhone goes tits up (screen goes, for example) and I can't do a restore before taking it back in to the Apple store. Their diagnostic software would show up a jailbreak, and goodbye warranty.

I'm also a little insecure about the security side of things, such as iTunes/App Store log in/passwords and other personal data after the phone has, essentially, been hacked.

A SHRINKING dev team mind you.

Jailbreaking doesn't make your phone anymore vulnerable than it is stock. And you can ALWAYS DFU restore no matter the condition of your phone, so you should never be stuck.

Again, what if my home button or sleep/wake button broke? Couldn't go into DFU mode without either.

Well, Apple is smart. Hire the Dev Team to work for them to avoid exploits of their OS in the future. Who in their right mind is going to turn down an Apple internship. I, for one, wouldn't.

It's mostly the A5 chip. The haven't found a bootrom exploit so everything has been userland so if a new iOS update comes out...that's the end of the jailbreak until bootroom exploit is found or a new userland exploit is found.

pod2g said within a week - he said that KNOWING his untethered jailbreak is only available through his developer account access.

All he did in his update was explain why it currently isn't available publicly.

He didn't say he hit another roadblock. He just explained to a person what's going on.

So far as I'm concerned, the 1-week window still remains unless pod2g himself says he's hit a roadblock that will take a while to figure out.

I understand why they did what they did. Just saying, I won't buy iOS products if jailbreaking stops becoming a reality. If it takes months upon months for jailbreaking to happen, I'll jump ship. iOS is much too limited and controlled for my liking, it's the hardware and Apple ecoystem integration that keep me (for now).

Right. We got "lucky" with iOS 4 because geohot found the A4 bootrom exploit, limera1n, which made the rest of iOS 4 smooth sailing.

With comex and geohot off the scene, and the A5 being more difficult, I'm getting worried that since they still have not found a bootrom exploit, A5 devices will have a real hard time being jailbroken.

I'm going to agree with this. Jailbreak devs know better than to be overly optimistic and reveal too much info. If anything, they are pessimistic and under relay information to avoid falsely raising hopes. I will give pod2g the benefit of the doubt and cross my fingers we see a release or at least an explanation come next Tuesday.

Honestly, I don't care about running "illegal" code used to jailbreak on my phone. I restore it if I hand it over to Apple anyways, and they want to try and deem jailbreaking "illegal" anyways. I can't wait until it's ruled that jailbreaking must be permitted on mobile devices.

If that was the case he probably would have said so publicly on twitter to prevent people from updating from 4.3.3 to 5.01, not everybody reads the blog.

But he obviously knew what exploit he was using before he posted that initial post that was hopeful of a one week release, so it's no surprise to him that he was using Apple's code. That said, something tells me that given how smart he is, he has something else up his sleeve.

lord im torn!

just got off craigslist...looking to buy a iphone 4 again. wish we knew more!

The iPhone 4S was never on 4.3.3 so theres no harm done, and every older device that is no an A5 is already JB on 5.0.1.

@rick snagwell

I'd get a 4.I've got both at the moment. If the 4s gets jailbroken I'm selling my 4 if not the 4s is going. You will be able to resell either easily.

The 4s is fine but when you've enjoyed a jb

The 4S came out on 5.0, a lot of 4S owners are still at 5.0 partly because of unlock possibillities from MN
Just like iPad2 on 4.3.3 if you don't upgrade to 5.01 before the signing window closes, you might miss out on the 5.01 JB.

I guess we'll see after s(f)unday....

i agree 100% with this. i think that (maybe) he's got something that can/will work, but could be fixed with the next update. maybe he's waiting for 5.1 to be sure his exploit still works.

Just like most have said this latest blog post from pod2g really confuses me. I mean we all know that pod2g is a bright guy so when he posted the whole "week" thing on twitter all the stuff he just wrote on his blog he already knew. So when he posted on twitter he already knew that he had up to that point only achieved a jailbreak using a developers account. So why tell everyone, mainly iPad2 users to update to 5.0.1? Who knows!!! Just confused and hope it all works out. Cause the more I think of it and look at the iPad 2 I start to think we may never see a JB for the 4s.

On another note....some of the recent post from some Chronic-Dev team members has me wondering if they have something up their sleeves for the 4s and iPad2. Maybe pull a Geohot and release something before pod2g?

@chronic next week will be one awesome ****ing week. and I'm not just talking about what we'll see unveiled at CES.

@p0sixninja Chronic-Dev, we the hardest team, forever winning bitch, we on our Charlie Sheen

I know it isn't much....but I'm looking for anything here hahah
