Will you switch to the iPhone?

I'll certainly consider it when I'm looking for a new phone in March when my current contract expires.

I'm less concerned about whizz-bang features and more interested in the user interface.

The UI's of all the major phone makers has stagnated, with each adopting their own style with little variation between models. Personally, I find Nokia's interface a little laborious and Motorola's is an absolute pain (with the ugliest font and text rendering in the world). SonyEricsson's is the one I'm most comfortable with, but it still triggers a few 'grrr!' moments.

I'd like to see something special in the UI department from Apple. Something rather understated yet powerful, much like that of the iPod. However, comparisons with the iPod's UI is rather pointless, since the range of functions that need to be manipulated is much broader on a phone.

The 'iPhone' may not be perfect from the get-go. However, I'm hoping it'll be very close :)

I wonder if any Apple phone would support firmware updates? I know that SonyEricsson have offered an online update service for a number of years, but it's a cludgy online affair which does not inspire confidence. Perhaps Apple will offer occasional updates and improvements via whatever computer-side software will manage it (iTunes, perhaps?).

Of course, it's rather silly thinking too heavily about this, since it's not even been released yet :)

4hrs 13min to go :D

well, u can be sure apple's design depart is one of the best out there.
but still, I think functionality is very important for most of the cell phone user.

i would switch if it had

-8GB+ storage for music
-blackberry style push email
-some form of QWERTY or similar suretype style input
-sync with calendar, address book, etc via bluetooth
-works on Tmobile (now or later)

personally i think having all of these is a pipe dream, so i am probably going to hold off.

$299?!?!

Pork!!!

edit* oops, thought this was the apple tv.

Anyway, for iphone, no. will not be buying. too many bad experiences with cingular, everything from bill haggling to not even getting service where i live or work. I was losing clients because I couldn't hold a damn conversation, and finally had to bite a termination fee.... though they did reduce the fee to "only" $100 considering the **** service i had to put up with them.

I've had nothing but great experiences from both verizon and sprint. And broadband tethering at starbucks. Can't beat that, even if it means i have to settle for a samsung.

I'm going to pass on the iPhone though it is amazing. Price and carrier is what made me lose interest.

Maybe.

I don't have a cellphone right now. Hardly anyone I know ever calls me, they just send email instead. My last cellphone I cancelled after the 2 year contract was up since I realized that I rarely used it for anything more than to call my bank to see how much money I had in my account (my bank has very few ATMs around here). It finally dawned on me that there would be more money in the bank if I didn't have the cellphone.

With a permanent job now, and doing more travelling, I'm interested in getting a phone again. While I'm fine with the price of the phone, I do think it is lacking in storage capacity. Despite that, my main concern is what price/plans Cingular announces for the phone? I'm a cheap SOB, and won't pay more than $30/month for service. What's EDGE going to cost? I can quickly see this thing costing more than cable or satellite TV service, which is already too expensive for me to care about.

No.

I am not a fan of the SmartPhone concept anyway, can the iPhone even fit into your pocket? What I hope to see is an iPhone-mini or something, a smaller and slimmer phone with less functionality but the same honest to goodness Apple user interface.

Did Steve say the iPhone was scratch resistent? I'm sure it has to be since it has multi-touch...just wondering.

4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches vs. 4.1 x 2.4 x 0.55 for the 30GB 5.5G iPod.

It's a bit taller, but thinner than the iPod, and does sooo much more. I'd gladly put one in my pocket.

What pocket are you talking about...?

It's 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches / 115 x 61 x 11.6mm. That will fit into most of my pockets...

nope. seems like the kind of thing that makes you say "wow!" but then you buy it and never need any of the features.

the only way i will buy this phone is if i can use it like a normal cell phone where you can put it up by the ear and if it is hearing aide compliant.

I question the ability to hold it up to the ear cause no where does it show that it has an ear piece on the phone just speaker phone ability.

Steve demoed exactly that. It has a proximity sensor built into it - when the device detects that it's near your head, the screen turns off to save power and the touchscreen stops responding so as to avoid accidental 'taps' with your cheek/ear/head. As soon as you take it away from your head, it goes back to normal. As for hearing aid compliance, I certainly hope it is so that everyone's able to use it if they want it.
