Man, you're missing a maybe option.

Only reason I'm potentially considering upgrading from my 2015 model is that my wife is pining to move up from her 2015 13" model with the 256gb storage to a 15" with 512 gb and a dGPU for her illustration work. She isn't really sold on the new MBPs, but she really likes my computer. So one option I might consider is selling her MBP, giving her mine, and buying one of the new ones. But I definitely don't want to do it until refurb models start coming online. I won't pay this much for something I have to buy tons of adapters for.

I really want that space grey with touch bar 13 inch but it's just so expensive. It's 2,299 for us Canadians goodness. That's without 13% HST. Currently own an early 2015 version Macbook Pro 13 inch and love it so tough to justify. I really like it though I appreciate the cut weight and mass as personally want the lightest and thinnest but can't justify going with the 12 inch retina just yet.

15% sales tax here in NS.

I will probably just wait. My 2015 15" rMBP is doing just fine. I hope the USB-C market will get pushed and by next summer the high performance quad-core KabyLake variant of the Macbook is available.

I wanted to upgrade but was iffy on the total abandonment of legacy ports. At $400 less across the line, it would have been an interesting call for me. At these prices, it's not a hard decision to keep my late 2013 13", which continues to run well.

Yes, I totally agree with the price hikes on the first generation MacBook pro's. Remember the 2011 MacBook pro's 15" even drop down to like $1700/$1800's for the base and then the rMBP came in at like $2200? My mid 2012 rMBP came out to like $2800 all said and done an it wasn't even fully maxed out. There is a precedence for a high tax on first gen products.

There's another way to look at this though. Even though there's a tax, the incremental improvements expected in 2017 and even 2018 are not going to be that great. We might see a 32GB option but that's still going to be a pricy option. A few percent increase in processor performance and graphics performance. If this 2016 is what you need and no more, then the premium tax is basically allowing you to get it a year or two earlier than everyone else with the knowledge that not much will change in the next few years.

Prices of the top end hasn't shifted all that much. However the barrier of entry of the low end has increased as much as $400. As i said, my mid 2012 rMBP was like $2800. There is one other factor that has changed in the last 16 to 24 months which is the much stronger dollar and Brexit. I see a lot of people quoting prices north of $4000 USD in foreign countries. And that just sucks :/

'member when the 500mhz original PowerBook G4 titanium cost $3500? i 'member.

I do too! That was my first Mac! Bought Ti PBG4 + Airport Card, Airport Base Station, AppleCare and a backpack. Was over $4K after tax. Think I hyperventilated for about an hour after that purchase because at that time my laptop was worth more than my car.

I might actually dust off my old 2007 desktop which cost me 1200€ then. I think it's still more powerful than today's laptops. I'd use this low powered samsung ultrabook as an on the go machine then.

I would order the 13 with bar if the bottom price came with a larger SSD or more RAM. As set up, it's out of my price range. I was actually impressed by the bar, so I'll probably wait rather than buy a Windows machine.

I remember that well. I was nodding in agreement strongly when he said what he said because i felt like "yes. This is a company that stands up for what it believes in! And really...this is just about having good taste"

Now? No. My opinion of apple has done a complete 180 and i see them as something else now. They are switching places with microsoft and showing that they aren't hungry anymore. They are sitting back, completely comfortable and overconfident in their position and think that whatever the hell they're doing is not only good enough, but that they can jack up prices and people will pay it.

Sad part? People probably will. Just like the headphone jack issue with the iphone 7, apple saw more sales than it ever had. People complain and then say they'll "buy it anyway" and prove apple right in their thinking that they can do whatever they want and people will buy it anyway.

I'm voting with my wallet. Thats for god damned sure

If you think Apple is switching places with MS I suggest you take a look at the specs and the prices of the products they just announced the other day in comparison to the new MacBookPros. If you still seem to think things are so bad then maybe you should patronize them instead and really put your money where your mouth is.

I'm voting with my wallet too. I bought an iPhone 7 and I also bought the brand new 15" MBP. The iPhone 7 is the best smartphone i've ever had, I'm glad the audio jack is dead, and I'm glad all the old crap ports on the MBP are dead also. I'm happy to support Apple in their path to the future instead of being perpetually constrained by the technology of the past.

The new Surface Book is gorgeous. So is the new MacBook Pro.

I don't know how anybody could think either company doing what they're doing is a bad thing.

The Surface will push Apple to be better and clearly the Surface itself is a product of Apple pushing Microsoft.

This is really all a win win for all us consumers.

+1.
I totally share your sentiments.

I'll admit, I'm disgruntled, but I've had such better experiences computing on a Mac the last 10yrs than I ever did on a PC, and because I also use an iPhone and iPad I love the integration-I can answer my texts on my laptop, if I'm reading an article in the living room on my laptop I can go to bed and continue reading it on my iPad (no space for laptop there). I still just love the MacOS and the fact that everything just....works and is intuitive in a way that Windows never was for me. And my Mac laptops, while costing more upfront, last 2x longer than any of my friends' Windows ones.

I bought a base model 2015 15" MBP with Apple Care until 2019 for $1350 yesterday. Very happy with that decision because now I don't need to buy adapters, too. :) And I save at least $1,000.

Was planning to move to the new 15" from my late 2013, but am a bit put off by the price. Granted, some of that is the money I had 'set aside' for the new machine went to a new hot water heater (sigh). Still considering it. I normally buy top of the chart specs, as I can deduct the cost from my income (self employed) and resell my old system to offset the costs, but doing the this time would make the new one almost $4000! Of course, that would be with the 2TB drive. If I use the same specs (16gig memory, 1TB drive, top video card), the price ($3289) is actually not that much more than I paid for my late 2013 ($3035). Given the improved specs, it may be worth it, but am a bit surprised that essentially the 'same' machine (not even the top of the line at this point without the 2TB drive) is 10% more than my existing model. Am normally accustomed to thinking technology pricing is in a downward trend over time, not an increasing trend. I think the 'touch bar' is more gimmick than useful for most purposes (how often do you actually do anything with the keys it is replacing?), but ya never know. Will defer my purchase for a bit and go see what the new keyboard is like (my biggest concern).

The issue for me -- and, I suspect, a lot of people -- is that Apple is losing my business because I'm the kind of person who would upgrade, despite not needing a new laptop, but simply can't because the prices are insane.

I pointlessly upgraded to the iPhone 7 because it only cost me £199, after the revenue of the sale of my iPhone 6S is taken into account.

I bought my current MacBook Pro this year for around £900 with educational discount. If I could sell it for £500, I'd need another £1,250 to get the basic Touch Strip model.

That's just insane. Yes, I actually like the keyboard and the bigger trackpad can't hurt. I wouldn't mind a change of colour with a space grey. The Touch Strip might be cool. But then I lose all my ports and the MagSafe.

I'm a fanboy, but I'm not a lunatic.

I just love to work with OS X, so that's why i can't leave the MBP behind, gonna get the 15, 2,7ghz, 512SSD and 4GB Radeon, and with student discount i will pay like 3.050 Euro... hurt's so much XD

Also, i have been using my late 2009 MBP till now, so got my money out of it.

Going with disgruntled. This is actually going to be my first Mac. I grew up with Windows, and have only ever owned Windows computers. But with the direction Microsoft has been taking since Windows 7, I thought it was time for a change. My 2008 Sony VAIO Z running Windows Vista still runs great hardware-wise, but there's no longer any software support for the device or the OS; so it was time for an upgrade. I knew I was going to get the new MacBook Pro unless it was completely terrible. I was definitely impressed with what I saw in the announcement today (Touch Bar and new form factor stand out).

My only concern is that they were priced a bit more than I thought they would be. But I don't think the prices are unreasonable, compared to both Apple's older offerings as well as those from similar competitors. The thing is, Apple doesn't have many "similar" competitors, so they can charge that supposed Apple tax. My budget didn't allow for anything better than the base 13" with Touch Bar, but I think I will be happy with it.

Same thing here. Although it's not my "first" Mac, I do call this is the first Mac that I really want to use. The first Mac I got is from my mom, an old air. I cannot get used to it, so I sold it. Now, as a programmer, I do need a Mac but sadly the new Mac line up almost priced me out. I am curious about how programmers' choice on their work machines will change after this year.

I couldn't justify the cost of the 13 inch Macbook Pro with Touch Bar. I haven't upgraded since 2009 so I still needed one. 2015 13 inch Macbook Pro will be sufficient until the next time.

Same game, more players, although the results are pretty similar

These prices are crazy, worse yet the storage. 256GB for PRO model? What audio or video will that hold!? I hardly have any videos or audio on my computer and its 180GB. A single modern game can ask 30 to 40 GB of storage alone!

When you want to upgrade from 256 to 500 GB they ask for $400!!! I mean on Amazon you can get a FULL 500GB SSD for $180 and thats retail price!
