Yes indeed, black (bars above and below the iPhone screen) IS whack, dirty and smelly.

No, Apple has the size right as it is. However, if they introduced such a model along side the current one I would be all for it. Choice is a good thing

Yeah, it would be cool if they retained the 2010 iPhone HD iphone design for those who want that (and at a cheaper price), while releasing a 4.5 inch iPhone for everyone else.

Choice is a good thing, and it's the main advantage Andriod has over the iPhone.

Here is how a 4" iPhone would look like........

Looks big, and they'd have to keep those black bars and aspect ratio too.

After giving it more thought, the 3.5" is perfect IMO.

No they don't have to keep the black bars. It would be stupid to keep the black bars.

Even if the black bars are only slightly reduced, here is how a 4.3" screen iPhone with the same aspect ratio as the iPhone would look compared to the current iPhone.

The screen is a LOT bigger, but the phone itself is barely any bigger at all. This is because the black bars are reduced (and they can be reduced even further).

Looking at that pic, I have to give props to apple for aesthetics though. The silver rim around the iPhone gives is a nice accent and makes the phone look better.

I find that Apple really had nailed the perfect screen size in combination with aesthetics. Although it might be nicer to hve a bigger screen, the largest concern would be comfortability in the hand which also has an impact upon the ability to type efficiently.

Now if Apple could make an iPhone that had a larger screen, wasn't much larger in the hand, and just as easy to type on - that's a real home run.

I would be happy with an increase that doesn't also increase the form factor, which allows limited room for a larger screen.

Using the iPhone with one hand comfortably is more important than a larger screen to me.

If they kept the size of the handset the same but increased the surface area with display I would certainly welcome it.

I certainly do not want a larger screen if it means a larger device.

+1:cool:

Hey, you weren't supposed to agree with me. This is MR and i thought we could argue at length about some trivial matter.

Why do some of you guys act like there will be a massiclve increase in the phone's size?

Look at the HD2. Its only maybe 3mm bigger than the iPhone, while offering a screen that's a full .8 inch bigger!

The difference of 3mm is so minute that if you blindfolded someone and gave them both phone one at a time, they would likely say they are both the exact same size.

I used the HD2 and while the screen is fantastic I don't think I want something that large. 4.5" is definitely too big while 3.5-4.3" is within what I would consider usable. 4" would be the sweet spot for me, I want to try the Galaxy S.

Lol. I doubt it.

What are you basing that on?

I've actually held and used the HD2 with it's 4.3 inch screen, and it's only very slightly bigger. I could barely notice. If I closed my eyes and someone handed it to me for the first time, I do fully expect to think it's the exact same size as the iPhone.

The difference is only like 2mm afterall.

Adding a few mm to the size is not a big deal and it's well worth the trade off to get a screen that's roughly a full inch bigger!

As you said, if that means we get an A4 too, and maybe even an AMOLED screen, all the better.

If you don't believe me about it being worth the trade off, use the HD2 or Evo 4G. It's only a couple of mm bigger than the iPhone, but the screen looks VASTLY superior.

I used the HD2 and it's not even a comparison, the HD2 (and Evo 4G's) screen destroys the iPhone's screen.

I just want to repeat the best point that others have said: it's not the single matter of being able to fit a larger sized screen onto the same size phone.

Apple products are very highly engineered and every choice is a tradeoff. A bigger screen will use more power and affect the ergonomics of the device. Take your iPhone and hold it with either one hand vertically or two hands horizontally: the non-screen area of the face of the phone is the same area that would be the most uncomfortable to hit with your thumb(s).

Also there's the matter of making the iPhone smaller. Its by no-means a small phone as it is. Especially after you add a case, as the vast majority of people do. So if they could make the iPhone the same size with a larger screen... is that what they even want to do if they could use the same techniques to make it smaller with the same size screen?

I agree that the 3.5" screen feels small for web browsing and videos, and any extra space would be nice. But web browsing is basically placing a desktop computer experience on a 3.5" screen... sites with iPhone specific versions work much better at what they do. And I haven't felt that the iPhone Apps, which are designed around the screen size, need more screen.

I used an HD2 and its screen, while bigger and more usable in my opinion, was not not better than the iPhone screen. Size is not everything. The iPhone's screen has better colours and a better overall appearance, while the HD2 had colour banding and it was not a good look. Maybe the iPhone has the screen it does due to quality. I'd rather keep the 3.5" screen than "upgrade" to a bigger one with washed out colour and banding.

4" should be the max IMO. 4.3/4.5 is just too much.

Keep iPhone HD's size and try to fit as big of a screen as possible, which should be around 3.7", maybe 4".

This is basically my exact ideology. Except the only thing I would stress is that I think the screen size is fine at 3.5". I will in no way be disappointed if the screen doesn't increase, but I would be satisfied if the screen increased as noted above.

Anything above 4" inches and the iphone would need to be bigger, at least horizontally. I think at some point enough is enough and to me that is 4". I mean it's a phone. If you want a better video/internet viewer there will be plenty of 5-10" tablets out there

a bigger screen would be nice but heres the thing the phone already has the perfect size screen it fits just right in your hand and its fits just right in your pocket, i dont need a bulky android device.

I just realized something which makes me seriously doubt that the iphone screen size will ever change.... This

For those too lazy for links. It's an article showing how the ipad screen is EXACTLY 2 iphone screens. Simplicity... :)

Seriously?

That article has nothing to do with screen size or even resolution. An iPad screen is much larger than 2 iPhone screens in both ways. If you have ever run an iPhone application in expanded mode on the iPad, you would have seen that the iPad is actually slightly more than 4x the resolution of the iPhone. That article is talking about the aspect ratio of the screens. You could make the iPhone screen larger while still having the same aspect ratio.

Aspect Ratio = the ratio between the lengths of the sides of the screen. For example, older televisions are 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning the the longer length is 4/3 times the size of the shorter length. Widescreen TVs are 16:9 aspect ratio, meaning that the longer side is 16/9 times the size of the shorter side.
