I was toying with the idea of going to android and I live in a 4g area, but I am turned off to the Evo because of that huge screen. I will probably go with the iPhone 4g, but if I decide to switch to android I am definitely switching to the Incredible.

I'm not denying that webpages look better on bigger screens, but this is a portable device and the iPhone just fits comfortably in my jean pockets and that is not something I'm willing to sacrifice. The Evo is a marvel of technology, but it was designed by techies from OS to for form factor. Also, my very un-techie girlfriend wants a smart phone and she basically put her foot down that there is no way she would carry around that monster. I definitely see the appeal, but Apple only sells one phone so it needs to be a people's phone, not something to make Leo Laporte cream his pants.

Of course an iPhone with a 4.5 inch screen will be wider, very slightly wider, maybe a couple of mm or so, but wider nonetheless

That's why I posted the picture of the HD2 phone next to the iPhone in the opening post.

That's about how much bigger a 4.5 inch screen iPhone would need to be.

Yes in the picture (and in real life), both the HD2 and the iPhone look around the same size, but the HD2 is indeed about 2mm bigger than the iPhone. 2mm is just very slight so it's not a big deal and very much worth the trade off in order to get a MUCH bigger screen.

Apple has the option to continue selling the 3.5 inch 2010 iPhone alongside the 4.5 inch 2011 iPhone so that everyone gets what they want.

Either way, it seems the vast majority of the posters here would prefer a 4.5 inch screen.

Try the Evo 4G and I think you might change your mind. It's actually roughly the same size as the iPhone only a mm or two bigger it's just the screen is a lot bigger.

You forget that the people on this thread are less than 1% of 1% of 1% of iPhone users so its a pretty insubstantial market.

I for one would love a bigger screen. My wife has an ipad and it suits here well as she never really used her iphone to its full potential. Im just not an ipad kinda guy, I need it in my pocket. I'm 6'1 and could easily handle a bigger phone. Does anyone know how the evo would work with a mac computer? Would the ical program be compatible? iphoto etc? Im seriously thinking of jumping ship and I have owned every gen of iphone and loved them. The small screen is just killing it for me:(

Most polls are of that small the portion of the population as well.

My friend recently got a HD2 phone (I told him to wait for the far superior Evo 4G but he didn't want sprint), and every single person I have witnessed who got to see his HD2 phone with it's enormous screen, while still being the same size as the iPhone, went gaga over it.

Techies, casuals, nonsmart phone users, everyone wanted to watch movies on it, and try the web on that screen.

So no, it's not a niche population that wants this. Almost everyone that sees how nice such a screen is, wants it, especially considering that it wouldn't change the size of the actual iPhone too much (if HTC could keep the phone similar to the iPhone in size, then I have no doubt Apple can as well).

i dought apple would add compatibility to its ilife programs for other devices besides idevices. Honestly id wait 10 days and see what the new iphone is gonna bring to the table.

Well, the lAtest rumor is that apple gave up on giving an AMOLED screen on the 2010 iPhone because no factory could deliver the needed 20 million screens or so over the next year.

They'll probably build a new factory to make OLED screens for the 2011 iPhone, while they do, they should just make them 4.5 inch screens.

I wouldn't want the phone to be any bigger. If they can increase the screen size without upping the device's dimensions, so be it.

I feel that this topic should be a poll of other macrumors users.

Before voting, take a look at this picture, comparing the iPhone to the HD2 which offers such a screen size, and yet manages to be approximately the same size and weight as the iPhone, while offering superior battery life!

Would you like to see such a screen size on the iPhone implemented in a similar fashion such that the dimensions of the Phone would not be much bigger at all?

From my experience, it's far easier to use the on screen keyboard, browse online, read pdfs, emails and e-books, and watch movies with an extra inch of diagonal real estate. Everything just looks nicer, especially games, websites read easier when the text isn't quite so tiny, and movies feel more immersive. It's shocking how big a difference that extra inch makes.

HTC's next phone, the HD3, is reported to offer an even bigger AMOLED screen, and better battery life, while actually being smaller, lighter and thinner than the current iPhone. This is done by minimizing the amount of screen real estate wasted on the front of the phone.

The Evo 4G likewise offers a much larger screen than the iPhone while having nearly identical dimensions to the iPhone.

The front of the phone could made more akin to this...

or this...

It's not the thinness of these phone designs that is impressive, it's the manner in which the designs maximized the amount of screen space on the front of the phones.

Until the HD2 phone a month or two ago, there wasn't a single device anywhere that offered a color multi-touch screen that was bigger than 3.5 or 3.8 inches.

The HD2 broke that mold, and now more and more devices are starting to, because that size has just now become commerically viable.

I fully expect that Apple with adopt it for their 2011 iPhone, just like everyone else is starting to.

Most iPhone owners by then will have had some exposure to an android phone with a 4.3-4.5 inch screen, and I suspect many of them will lust after that vastly enhanced video viewing and internet browsing experience, I certainly do after seeing the HD2.

Apple could continue to sell/manufacture the 2010 iPhone HD/4G for $99 for people who want that, and manufacture a 4.5 inch screen alongside it priced at $199 or $299 for everyone else.

Given what HTC has been able to do with the Evo 4G by June 2010 , just imagine what Apple will have to compete with to retain their customers by June of 2011. A 4.5 inch screen (atleast one model with such a screen size) will be an absolute neccessity.

So, we don't have to buy new cases? Yeah, 4.5 would be nice.

Yes, we have to buy new cases, just like we had to buy new cases when the 3G came out, and now when the 2010 iPhone comes out.

And yes it will be a mm or two bigger, just like the HD2 and Evo 4G phones are ever so slightly bigger than the iPhone.

My point is, that mm or two is miniscule, and hardly noticable, but the much bigger screen IS noticable, and anyone that has toyed around with the HD2 phone can vouch for this.

I would love to see a 4.5 inch screen on the next iPhone, but only if they can do it without making the phone wider than it is now.

that is like asking for a 50 inch TV that fits in your entertainment center which can hold up to a 42 inch TV.... there's just not the room on the front of the iphone.

Now if the iphone switches to a 16:9 aspect ratio.... maybe... But I don't see that happening(and quite frankly don't particularly want it). Especially due to the iPad reinforcing that same ratio.

but with the current 4:3 aspect ratio you can really only fit about 3.7, maybe a 4.0 at the max.

That's all well and good except for the fact that the HD2 only has a 4.3" screen and it is actually 5mm wider. That's in addition to being 5mm longer.

What are you doing with the other hand? I had no problem when I messed with the HD2 using 1 hand. I guess it depends on how big your hand is.

Thats what I would like to know...

and thats just it. People have different size hands.

I'm planing on getting an iphone and I would love my first iphone to have a high res 4.0 inc screen. So it will be a tad bit bigger. not that it will make much of a difference. (unless you wear girl jeans)

Bigger is better, but maybe Apple will keep the screen small so that it doesn't interfere with iPad sales.

how would a PHONE interfere with the ipad?

I'd rather keep the iPhone really portable. If I need a bigger screen, I'll use my iPad.

expect the ipad is not a phone. its a multimedia device.

That's all well and good except for the fact that the HD2 only has a 4.3" screen and it is actually 5mm wider.

Did you know that the iPhone 3G/3GS is a mm bigger than the original iPhone. I bet you had no idea, even if you set both phones side by side, you wouldnt be able to tell. That's how tiny a mm is.

The HD2 is 5mm bigger than the original iPhone and 4mm bigger than the iPhone 3G/3GS, it's not a noticable difference is size at all. And that tiny 4mm increase in size is very much worth the increased screen real estate.

And if you look at the HD2 you can see that it wastes a lot of space too. That huge half an inch place that HTC devoted to writing their brand name, there is no reason for that space to exist, it's wasted real estate that could have been used to make their phone even smaller.

This is why the vast overwhelming majority of people here want a 4.3-4.5 inch screen on the 2011 iPhone.

Did you know that the iPhone has a rather wide screen compared to others and so increasing the size would make the phone pretty damn wide? To keep the aspect ration would make the phone rather big horizontally. I don't know if that's something Apple would be willing to allow. Essentially, if you want a bigger screen, you're probably going to have to look elsewhere for a few more years.

No use tring to tell people that. These kids dont pay attention in school. They are too busy chit chating with their buddies about their myspace pictures and texting on their sidekicks.

Haha, I won't lie. This phone looks so f#cking nice and makes the iPhone look like garbage next to it.

Really, I don't care much for the plastic look, the main thing that appeals to me about the Evo 4G and HD2 is the screen size.

The thought of browsing the web, reading ebooks, getting navigation from and watching movies on a nice 4.5 inch screen even when outside the house makes me drool. The HD2 fits easily in my pocket and my GFs purse with room to spare, the iPad is too big to be a portable device you take with you wherever you go, but the Hd2 isn't.

Has anyone emailed Steve Jobs yet? Any responses?
