I was actually hoping it would have been a little bigger. So much wasted space on the front of the phone. Would have made watching vids and stuff more bare able.

Slightly larger would have been good if they didn't change the dimensions of the phone, just used the space it already has. For general short clip watching it's ok though. I just watched my 1st full leangth movie on mine, and although it wasn't that bad, slightly bigger would have made it better. I guess that's something that may happen with iPhone 5.

I like that. Most of my videos are wider than the current 3:2. My only concern would be how existing apps scale.

There's a lot of bezel on top and below the screen that could have been used for more screen real estate. I know the iPhone is crammed with components as it is, I wouldn't have minded it being slightly thicker or staying the same thickness if the screen was bigger. Having said that, 3.5" is fine, more would have been nice.

We could certainly use that extra screen height to accommodate all these iAds that will be creeping in - then I can just put black electrical tape over that part of the screen and enjoy my iPhone 4 in peace.....

That's not a bad idea, but I think a requirement of any mobile device is that you have to be able to hold it in one hand and punch all its "buttons" with the thumb of the same hand. Think of dialing, whilst walking and dragging a suitcase behind you. If the screen grows in size, someone with short thumbs would have to stretch awkwardly to reach the "far-away" buttons.

Of course, I guess the OS could block developers from placing controls in the extra real estate? Maybe only use the full screen for minimally interactive things like video or ebooks?

Really? They are going to bother you THAT much? If that bugs you so much every day life must be really hard.

Of course a larger screen would of been nice but I am not upset at all that it is the same size. What I love is the new kick butt screen, I would rather have this than bigger (both would of been cool.) Only think I wouldn't want is for the phone to grow in size, that would def be a shame. They may not be able to stretch the screen because of all the sensors and such. I'm sure there's a great reason why it's not bigger, I just don't really care.

I'm trying to decide on what to get for my first smartphone. The iphone 4 would be an easy choice except for:

1) At&t - I'm a little scared of all the bad press on them regarding 3g although I hope it isn't really that bad

2) screen size- the iphone basically has the smallest screen of the latest batch of touchscreen smartphones. I want to be able to use mine as a ebook reader and I also want to be able to browse the web comfortably. IMHO increasing screen resolution, while nice, doesn't really change the fact that the words on say a web page zoomed out are still ridiculously small and can't be read.

Having said that I still haven't made up my mind and the indecision is killing me!!!

Should Apple consider a 4 inch screen?

Should Apple consider the option of a 4-inch screen for its next iphone?

The new retina display is indeed lovely, and it seems you could take a magnifying glass to the screen and still get clear text. That's great in theory, but for those of us with less than perfect vision, I feel a little more screen real estate would go a very long way to enhancing the user experience.

Add that increasing numbers of iPhone competitors are coming out with 4 inch screens (or larger), and it seems it's worth considering.

Your thoughts?

At what point do we see diminishing returns, with regard to screen size. Given that the iPhone 4 has a very crisp display, the need for a larger screen has been blunted to some degree.

Also look at the battery life of needing to drive a larger screen. Apple has been pushing longer and longer battery times, and by going with a larger screen, that goes in the opposite way.

Just look at people using the EVO, it probably has one of the worst batteries on the android platform. I'd hate to see that occur on the iPhone, its definitely will be a step back.

I agree. I wouldn't mind seeing a 3.7" or 4" screen size, but I'm not willing to risk battery life for it. If they can't get more energy efficient screens working at affordable prices, then I don't see them increasing the screen size.

I don't think that it would sell well. The iPhone is pretty big to begin with, and using a 4 inch screen would make it significantly bigger, and also less pocketable. Personally, I wouldn't buy a phone bigger than the iPhone is now.

Other phones with bigger displays don't have the same aspect ratio as the iPhone. For example, the Sony X10, with 4" screen, it has the same width but taller. Apple obviously has space on the iPhone now to increase screen size (black bezel on top and bottom), but the only way I see them increasing it is with keeping the aspect ratio the same (obviously for Apps).. then they'd have no choice but to let the phone get wider.

Although I'd love for the screen to get bigger, I don't think it will for a while. The previous screen was used for 3 years, and this new "retina display" will probably stick around for a while.
