Or they started with that resolution, and now that a million apps are in that resolution they have locked themselves into it for eternity...

suxxx... cuz slightly larger screens are catching on, especially with people with larger than girl sized hands ;)

IMO, they kept the screen size for the scalability of the apps. When other manufacturers were going higher in resolution, Apple kept the iPhone 3Gs at HVGA because they weren't sure how to scale the apps without creating resolution conflicts. For the iPhone 4, they just decided to double the pixel count so apps could be upscaled without causing functionality issues.

I wish they could figure out some sort of resolution independence.

Maybe they couldn't find a supplier which can offer a larger screen with the specs they wanted and still keep the title of 'thinnest smartphone'

I agree. I can reach every part of the screen holding and using the phone with one hand. I dont see the need for a larger screen. If I wanted something bigger, I'd buy an iPad.

I agree, I went to look at an Evo one day and felt it was just too damn big. I was forced to use 2 hands and could hardly imagine having to lug that thing they call a phone around. iPhone has the right size where you are still able to use it with just one hand comfortably.

I have owned an iPhone since launch 2007. I can't recall ever using two hands (unless a game requires it obviously)

But I do the "right hand, portrait mode" 100% of the time. It's how I text, surf the web, music, everything. This is how I like it.

I don't want a massive screen that requires both hands to use. No thanks

It's because this really is the biggest size device to comfortably use as a phone, anything bigger and it starts to feel awkward.

It's possible that's the reason but most people I see using their iPhone are often usin two hands anyway.

I don’t know about you, but I almost always use my iPhone one-handed. I usually only use two hands in landscape.

I think that could absolutely be a reason. I'm a one-handed user as well, wouldn't have it any other way.

And you love it or you wouldn't buy their products.

I actually didn't buy an Iphone 4 because I wanted a bigger screen than my 3G. I think 5" is about the maximum portability for a phone to still be comfortable. IMO

The Ipad is far to big to carry around all the time. Although everyone I know who has one does it every day. Each to their own I guess.

I really would rather have another apple product, but unless something bigger comes out. I will probably buy another brand phone. Yuck.

I think the iPhone screen size is great. I agree that the EVO is just too big for a phone. The iPhone has been fine for me size-wise, and I have pretty large hands. Landscape typing is easier, but I've been getting better at portrait typing. I really wouldn't want a phone too much bigger than the iPhone.

I personably think that the screen is the perfect size for a mobile device and I also think Apple kept it at 3.5 so that apps are compatible.

I had a HTC Hd2 with crappy Microsoft on it and that was not the issue the issue was size. It was just a chore to carry and use.

I agree regarding the size of the device. Like anything, there is a limit at both extremes of size. Ie: boobs! I think an edge to edge screen and possibly bumped out 2-3mm would probably make a 3.7" screen. As far as developers and apps, the screen can maintain the same resolution at 3.7", and the pixel density would still be around 300dpi.

I don't get the talk of phone sizes being too big. They might be too big to operate with one hand, but too big in your pockets and what not is a but too much. I mean at most we are talking about a 0.5" increase in any dimension. Apple could have easily made it a 4.0" screen and not change the physical dimensions.

Very good theory, OP

Never thought about it before but after reading your post, I too realized that I can touch all points of the screen using only one hand. I always figured it was to keep third party dev's from having to rescale.

Funny thing is...I use landscape whenever the app allows. Just weird like that, I guess.

All/most other companies are coming out with larger screens for their flagship phones: HTC EVO, Samsung Galaxy S, Droid X and their customers like it. Apple crowd tend to approve everything Apples does (that is until Apple changes its mind). I believe that 4 and 4.3 inch phones are perfectly pocketable. I am not sure that people claiming that they always use the iPhone with just one hand are being candid. How do you use pinch-to-zoom in Safari, Google maps and other applications?

I think the biggest challenge for Apple in terms of switching to bigger screen might be compatibility with existing docks. Many existing devices (speakers etc.) would not be able to accommodate larger phones.
