For developer is a pain if they keep change display resolution, and every app has to be change and adapt for each screen.

3.5" is good for a phone.

It's funny, the thread that brought this up last month had lots of arguments going both ways. Now everyone seems to on board with the 'Retina display is awesome' line of thought.

What a difference a demo makes. I wonder how much more we'll all believe it once we actually see these displays in action. Thus far we all seem very convinced just from having seen the keynote demo!

I would prefer a bigger screen, as long as it still fits comfortably in my pocket. The iPad is way too big to carry around 24/7. And the iPhone is too small for browsing the web. Aren't there some Android phones with bigger screens?

I agree. I wouldn't mind seeing a 3.7" or 4" screen size, but I'm not willing to risk battery life for it. If they can't get more energy efficient screens working at affordable prices, then I don't see them increasing the screen size.

I feel the same way. 3.7" to 4" sounds good as it wouldn't make the phone that much bigger.

It partially addresses the source of the gripe: more content on the screen.

I'm trying to decide on what to get for my first smartphone. The iphone 4 would be an easy choice except for:

1) At&t - I'm a little scared of all the bad press on them regarding 3g although I hope it isn't really that bad

2) screen size- the iphone basically has the smallest screen of the latest batch of touchscreen smartphones. I want to be able to use mine as a ebook reader and I also want to be able to browse the web comfortably. IMHO increasing screen resolution, while nice, doesn't really change the fact that the words on say a web page zoomed out are still ridiculously small and can't be read.

Having said that I still haven't made up my mind and the indecision is killing me!!!

1 - Don't go by ANYONE'S opinion here on AT&T unless you yourself try out the service in YOUR AREA! Service will vary greatly, by carrier and by location. What works for me, may not work for you. Again, do yourself a favor and give it a test run. If you're not happy, you can cancel. You only need a week or so to test things out.

2 - The screen size is just right. Don't get sucked into the whole bigger is better thing. The iPhone is what it is because of the features it has. The screen is perfect. Not too big, not too small. Now, reading on ANY device with a small screen, even if it's 4.5" or so, it's not fun and not advisable. If you want to read ebooks, get something made to do that. iPad, Kindle, whatever. Phones are not good for reading books. It will kill your eyes.

No...IMO the screen size is perfect for a phone. I have my ipad if I want a larger screen.

Enough with you people bitching about the screensize.

It's designed to be a phone with internet functionality. Not a Dell Streak

4" would be ideal, as it would make internet browsing a bit easier, get more words on a page for eBooks, and videos would be easier to view. A 0.5" DIAGONAL increase in screen size will not make the phone THAT much bigger, even if aspect ratio stayed the same (which would be preferable). The battery life would not really suffer that much because there would be more room for a BIGGER batter and because the number of pixels would stay the same (presumably, since the pixel density is so ultra high right now in iPhone 4). Lastly, the sightly bigger phone size could allow for possibly the inclusion of TWO memory module slots instead of one, which can possibly double the phone capacity.

Win win win....... :)

The EVO has a 4.3" screen, and the phone size doesn't seem all that much bigger than the iPhone, but the screen seems WAY bigger. Looks pretty cool actually.

Tony

want bigger get a Ipad! ;)

The iPad is too big for it's one of its major purposes (eBook reader). Plus, it's not a phone.

The iPhone is slightly too small for what it can now do since its intial release.

I'd love to see a 4" or 4.3" iPhone and a 7" or 8" iPad. The sizes are both wrong right now.

it was a joke! ;) for me the screen size is good fits perfectly in any pocket! oh and sometimes it not the size of the screen but knowing how use it!

This would make the iPhone a 1/2" wider and 7/8" longer. No thanks.

How could increasing the screen size by 0.5" DIAGONALLY using the same aspect ratio make the phone 0.5" WIDER? Do the math!

Actually it would only increase the width by about 0.25". Theoretically, it could increase the height by about 0.38", but there is more than enough vertical bezel on the phone to keep it the same height while increasing the screen height.

I think a 0.25" increase it width is small enough not to be a significant issue with the benefit of a larger screen.

Tony

I really think 4" is a sweet spot.

I would agree with you. The htc 4g evo 4.3 is a little too big, the N1 and Incredible's 3.7 is a little to small. 4 inches would be great, but probably won't ever see it on the iphone....but maybe.

Do I want a larger screen? Yes and no. As long as the top of the screen isn't too far for my thumb to reach, I shouldn't have a problem. The biggest I'd go is 4". At 4.3", the Evo is just too big, and is more tablet than phone in my book.

Thanks for the reply

on the first point. I just might do this. Not sure how easy at&t makes it to test their network but you're right I probably won't really know what its like until I try myself. (and in fact I have at&t for a regular "dumb" phone and have never had any problems)

on the 2nd point. I'll wait until the iphone 4 comes out and I'll take a look at the screen to see if web browsing and ebook reading (they will probably have ibooks preloaded on the demos) looks. The reason I don't want a dedicated ereader is that it is too big (I know too small too big I'm never happy :p) and I'm not crazy about a single purpose device like a kindle. The other phone I've been considering is the htc evo and after reading the reviews I get the impression that people were able to forgive many of the shortcomings because having a physically larger screen made things a lot better. But like I said before I've never had a smartphone so its hard for me to judge.

I'll just have to go check them out for myself:D

I DID the math, Tony. I actually drew it on a piece of paper and I didn't ASSUME the current vertical bezel could be used.

My thoughts on why apple kept a 3.5" screen (and why it may always stay that way)

I wasn't setting out to think about this topic, but as I was using my phone a new idea came to me. I usually us my phone in my right hand, portrait mode, manipulating the touchscreen with my right thumb. I have average sized hands and can just reach all corners of the phone using it one-handed. I now remember using the Evo and how it required two handed operation to be able to reach all points on the screen.

I think that Apple has kept this in mind and wants the phone's screen accessible at all points, using one-handed operation. Now, I suppose that if they kept the same overall width of the phone and widened it a few mm to the edges, that may work for increasing it, but I think they like their bezels.

Anyway, try it if you don't use it primarily that way. Now try to get to a point that is an inch higher and you'll see it takes two hands.

Disclaimer: I think further can be reached, but it is a stretch and I would be worried about dropping my phone while trying to hit the furthest point on the screen.

Food for thought.

It's possible that's the reason but most people I see using their iPhone are often usin two hands anyway.

Would've loved a bigger screen. But if asked whether I would want a bigger screen or a higher resolution I think we know which one most would choose.
