I don't literally mean not a single person uses email anymore. Normal people uses social networks and messages, businesses use things like slack and teams. But when I say nobody uses email anymore, I mean it's no longer mainstream and will continue declining.

From Wikipedia (Which is far from Gospel, but in something like this I think my be trustworthy)
"As of May 2018, Slack had over 8 million daily users, 3 million of whom had paid accounts."

Sorry, but that doesn't sound like this is the new Mainstream to me.

OMG, they're taking over the wooooooooorld! Slack Apocalypse!

At $10/mo, you get the full MS Office suite subscription ($8.25 per month). That includes Outlook for Mac.

100$ each year for a mail client is insane. Why do some developers lose any common sense when they start pricing their products?

Most consumers software fails not because it is too pricey, but because it is far too cheap.

In Newton's case, though, I wager they bet too high.

The App Store description says they have "over 40,000 subscribers" even an average subscription price of $50 is $2million per year. And they can't make that work?

That is indeed troubling. They say their offices are in Palo Alto and Bangalore, so they probably have their management and marketing (and maybe, like, a head of software engineering) in Palo Alto and most of their developers in Bangalore. A typical Palo Alto salary would be $110k, but in Bangalore, just $7k.

Sounds like mismanagement.

For $70 a year you can get it for one
I really like the ability to know when a email has been read by the recipient. Anyone else offer that?

I was a subscriber at $39 a year. Really liked the app.
I didn't use their app, but was the read receipt any different than the one offered by Microsoft Outlook? I can request both a delivery receipt and a read receipt; however, a message pops up telling the recipient I've requested a read receipt and the recipient can simply click on "cancel" if they don't want one sent.

I remember a service that would embed a one-pixel image with a unique file name that would let the recipient know if the message had been displayed. Disabling the automatic downloading of pictures defeated it though, and I configured my router to block the domain too.

Newton embeds a tracking pixel on the outgoing emails, so it’s the same as that. The receiver has no idea the email is being tracked, unlike Outlook that requests a read receipt. As you have pointed out though, you can stop these tracking pixels if you do not allow pictures to download.

im legit on the verge of tears. ive been using newton for the last year and it has been the best email client ive ever used and hit every checkbox for me and had features i cant live without now. this is so sad. does anyone have alternative recommendations? Features from Newton that i need for alternative would be:
1. separate read receipts for each recipient in an email thread and number of times they opened( and what device they read from and device location)
2. mail snoozing that would make it "new" in the inbox at a later time
3. "send later" email scheduling.
4. unified inbox for multiple accounts

Privacy questions aside, this sounds like something for a newsletter service, not an e-mail client.

Outlook can do 2, Spark can do 3 (possibly 2 as well). Not sure if either can do 4.

i dont think read receipts are a bad thing. i think everyone should have a right to know whether their recipient read their email and is ignoring them or didnt read it yet. i have no problem with anyone knowing if i read their email or not.
newton was great it would tell you everytime recipient read it, what device and where they were

Yes! This is great news!
There are a lot of pretentious people out there, including this very forum, who love to feel special by using unheard of 3rd party mail crap like Newton, Mailbox, Sparrow, etc.. instead of just using Mail.app on macOS/iOS like a normal person.
Unfortunately, due to these types of people it allows price gouging BS apps like this one to thrive, even if only for a short while. This is also the same reason that IAP-ridden freemium apps continue to litter the App Store.
So when things like Sparrow are bought out, or Newton shuts down, it brings me great joy to know that the s*** eating grin on their faces have been wiped off. :D

Same here. Logging in to just the newton account on Windows, mac, ipad and Samsung galaxy makes it so easy with 5 different email accounts... Not having to set them up individually per device is amazing.

Plus going to miss the read receipts.

I only pay £47 a year for mine too... Must've been as I was an early adopter or something.

Going to miss you Newton. Now what do i use next.....

I'm trying out Airmail again, I purchased it years ago so I'm lucky to get the read receipts.

How is the Canary testing going?
After using Canary for a few days, I decided against it because my recipients would have to have keys to decrypt my mail each time. Some of my contacts are not tech savvy and I don’t want to have to babysit.

I am trying AirMail. I have it setup for iCloud sync across devices. And when I tried the import from iCloud option for my second phone, I still had to manually input passwords for all of the accounts. Don’t know if that is because I am running iOS 12 or not. Didn’t like having to do that. I also installed the read receipt plugin and will see if that works. This program has so many options.

Yeah, Airmail has a ton of customisation options which I like and read receipts on iOS are working well too. I'm running the iOS 12 and a beta version of the app (1.9). Will have to install the beta macOS app tonight to give it a go.

Did you read the privacy policy before installing and using Astro? It's not good, in my opinion.

There is a reason it is free and its not out of the goodness of their business hearts.

You just said everything I was thinking when I read that email this morning. Newton (and previously Cloudmagic) was the cornerstone of my professional life for the past two years. All of those features PLUS it's the ONLY email client I've found that has a dead simple and clean UI. Everything else has a bunch of icons, weird spacing and text, and other crap that gets in the way. This was super minimalistic but had a bunch of power features. Just being able to tell my clients that I know opposing counsel read my email 5 times beginning on August 3 at 7:42am has helped me so many times.

Or...there are a lot of people out there whose entire professional life revolves around email and they need a program that will allow them to interact with messages, attachments, read receipts, quickly and efficiently. I've used the mail app. It's not terrible, but it's cluttered for my taste. And outlook. And Airmail. And native gmail. And Spark. I literally tried EVERY email app out there before settling on cloud magic/Newton. My productivity skyrocketed when I started using it and I can't say that about any other email app. Now I have to go back to the drawing board and pray that in the last two years somebody made something almost as good as Newton so I can remain productive.

My ability to earn income depends in part on how quickly I can dispatch emails and deal with problems. This screws me over royally.

People who need features not found in the stock app are not necessarily pretentious. If the stock app offered the options I want and need, I would solely rely on it.

Placing those who use apps you don't, into convenient boxes for logical fallacy labeling is not logical at all.

If the stock app works for you, stick with it. It shouldn't bother you that some other people uses apps you don't want to use. And taking delight in a business going bad or users having to find other means is very close-minded to say the least, in my opinion.

What made you go to Airmail over the popular "Spark?"

In my opinion, Airmail has a more refined / professional look to it, versus Spark. I also like the plethora of options that Airmail offers, that include integration with many apps. Spark can't compete in this area.

Over the two days (now) that I have been using Airmail, I find my work within it is faster than using Spark.

And most of all, I like Airmail's privacy policy over Spark's.

Edited to add: I really like the email icon use with Airmail. When viewing mail in my inbox, I can quickly and easily see which person or company the email is from by seeing the icon associated with it, which I did not setup manually for each. And Airmail incorporates the correct icons for each mail. Very nice attention to detail, even if it is small detail.

By the way, you can turn off PGP encryption in Canary mail, which I did for several accounts where it wasn't truly needed. You can also send encrypted mail on certain accounts. Canary also has read receipt which has been very fast (like Newton). The Mac version of Canary has a very nice layout.

The read receipt plugin for Airmail is slower and you have to remember to set it each time you send an email.

Canary has snooze, read receipt, templates, one touch unsubscribe, unified inbox, smart filters, bulk cleaner and integrations with Dropbox, Google drive etc. It also has a dark mode.

Canary has an excellent privacy policy, in my opinion. For now, I am going to use Airmail and Canary.

Just wanted to clarify about Canary since you asked earlier.

Edited to add: From Airmail iOS privacy policy (for those curious)

Data removal policy:
- If you disable the account in Airmail settings, all data for that account is removed.
- If you disable push notifications for an account, all data for that account is removed.
- If you don’t use the app for more than 7 days, all data is removed.
- The new Apple push server will notify us when a user removes the app, so we will remove all data.

In general, we prefer not to collect any personal information or data. We are not in the business of collecting users and selling their data.

- Permission requests for contacts, calendar, and directory access is meant for the app itself and not us.

Does Airmail share my data with anyone?
Airmail does not share your information with any third parties. We are not in the business of selling your data. However, we may disclose information if we determine that such disclosure is reasonably necessary to comply with the law.
