Actually Reddit has every intention of working with Apollo. Unfortunately Christian has no experience in AI field and he didn't include the premium of what major AI startups are willing to pay for API access into the "fair price" calculation.

Maybe factor that in and you can see Reddit's side instead of blindingly listening to what you want to hear?

This is hilarious.

You know all the models *already* scraped everything off Reddit, right? Spez's attempt to charge for it now is closing the gate after the horses have already left.

What reddit's work? The API was previously free to use and they were even incapable of developing their own mobile app until they bought Alien Blue.

You're saying Reddit appeared to have gathered hundreds of millions of users with zero work? What?

And the content is provided (free of charge) by mods and users – so if anyone's been freeloading and now capitalising on others' work, it's reddit themselves.

Mods/users never expected monetary compensation. And if they do now and won't get it, they'll leave reddit and someone else will take over for free.

This is relevant, how?

Because Reddit is desperate to finally have that IPO so the stockholders can dump their shares and attempt to recover something. Fidelity is one of those holders.

Except Reddit is not and never will be profitable. They don't have anything of value - advertisers see Redditors as the least valuable group on the internet (hardly a surprise) - and they have no way of making that up.

Meanwhile, it's completely fine that Reddit freeloads off of all the content and moderation work that they don't compensate their users for creating and doing?

Mods/users never expected monetary compensation because redditors are so stupid and addicted to the kArMa/UpVoTes and moderators enjoy the power trip of controlling the discourse of thousands/millions of users in a subreddit.

Again I ask, how does this relate to my comment about Apollo should stop freeloading off of Reddit's work and that Christian is laughing at how rich he is?

yeah because the world's knowledge stops in the year 2023. 🤣

I'm going to assume you don't work in the AI sector so gonna call it here. Have a good one.

"Freeloading" requires not giving anything in return, which is not the case for Apollo. Apollo gave Reddit a better, more functional app compared to the official one without Reddit having to pay any of its development costs.

despite Reddit never charging for its API in the past;

If they never charged in the past, that does not mean it should be free permanently. Reddit starts charging, developer doesn't like it, and they should leave. That's how it should work without all the drama.

Zero hypocrisy.

Correct, I'm someone with actual creative drive and the ability to express it. That would preclude me 'working' in an 'industry' built on deception and conning the most vencap they can before it all comes tumbling down.

Narwhal will live on I read! I much prefer it over the official Reddit app. I started with alien blue, but then tried Apollo (lifetime sub) and ended with narwhal. Narwhal may have to charge a monthly subscription in the future, but I don’t mind paying a few bucks for a much better Reddit experience.

i just deleted the app but if anybody wants to try it over the garbage first party app, this allegedly will keep it working....https://www.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/14iub7y/backup_apollo_app_version_0159_if_you_want_to_use/

It sounds like Reddit‘s decision to charge these fees with such short notice was the problem, not the fees themselves. Given enough time the dev could’ve let his users know prices were increasing as a direct result of Reddit’s new policy and users could’ve decided to pay the additional fees or not on their own.

I’m surprised he doesn’t simply re-name the app and relaunch it when he’s ready with a new pricing model to account for those new fees since he’s already written the app and by all accounts it’s very well written and popular.

It can’t be that difficult to take that existing code and adjust it to incorporate this new pricing model can it? I’ sure I’m missing something or it seems like the developer would be doing that.

What am I missing? Does he believe not enough people would pay what it’ll cost so it actually is the new pricing model that’s the problem? If not and it’s a timing thing instead why not do the above?

A single developer and you act like $20 million is a drop in the bucket for someone to pay each year. Even if he had to raise the rates by an obscene amount to compensate. People will complain and say it is to much making it not worth it even being as good as it is. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t scenario. Apollo is riding into the sunset. That being said, deleted the app and Reddit account never to come back on Reddit. It’s doing a good job of self implosion atm any ways. I did buy a Pixel Pals yearly subscription to support development and I do enjoy the app itself.
