The board demanded innovation. While a larger phone isnt innovation, Apple are now giving the public what they want. Gone are the dark days when Apple knew what you want, not you yourself. That applied in the early modern smartphone days, i.e. first iPhone, but not for years.
Extensability, Continuity, Handoff, Homekit, Healthkit, these are innovative. While the latter two are not new, you will find Apple's implementation will be perfect, you do not need to know of the many many incompatible protocols.
As for the 5.5, if YOU find it too big for YOUR use case, get the 4.7 or a 4" 5S. The word smartphone is obsolete for many of us, who use the phone app rarely. Finally, a choice!!!
No, you don't get it. I don't really care what are they going to do. I mean, there will certainly be a 4,7 iphone, right? Fine for me. They can make a 7 inch iPhone for all i care. I will find what i need and i will buy it. That's about it. I'm not a fanboy, although i own many apple products, so i guess my life is easier. No stress, especially over a phone (granted, a mini computer)

Seems funny that Apple haven't even released anything yet, and people are already basing opinions on thin air..
Yeah, because we NEVER knew what they were GOING to release before the ACTUAL keynote.... right?....... RIGHT?
