I think despite the protestations of some here, if Jobs were still alive today the iPhone 6 would look exactly like the rumored iPhone 6 (4.7" model) but still limited to the 4.0" touchscreen size, but slightly thicker to accommodate a longer-life battery. He really was that controlling in terms of design of Apple products.

But as such, the iPhone 6 models are likely the among the first products designed without without Jobs' input. This explains why Apple was able to increase the size of the phone to 4.7" and 5.5" sizes for the touchscreen.

By the way, any guesses on what Apple will name the 5.5" iPhone 6? I've heard both the iPhone 6L and iPhone Air names suggested....

The iPhone "Air" would be good...

If Apple didn't do this name, then we'd have to remember a different one..

Plus, it would tie perfectly into the current "air"

Until Apple changes it all next year that is..

You might want to check which symbol means "feet" and which means "inches". I think you might have them backwards. Or maybe they mean something else wherever you might live?

If it's confusing to the metric crowd, the difference is 1.27cm and 1.91cm. In other words, the 5.5" iPhone case is about 1.27cm wider and 1.91cm taller than the 4.7" case.

An American penny (coin) is also about .75" across, so if you laid an iPhone 4.7" on top of an iPhone 5.5" so that- say- the left & bottom of both phones were aligned, you could lay 1 penny above the 4.7" and it would just about perfectly cover the part at the top of the 5.5" phone that is peeking out from behind the top of the 4.7".

I've looked at what he quoted to correct me about 10 times now and I see " (symbol for inches) NOT ' (symbol for feet) used next to both .5 and .75.

I know that .5" = .5 inches and that 1' = 1 foot. I did use the symbols properly.

Maybe my comment about feet confused you. I sarcastically said devices aren't measured in feet, because the iPhone would have to be measured in feet for .5" - .75" difference to not be that great.

Air means smaller and lower powered in Macbook land and bigger and higher powered in iPhone and iPad land ;) Guess that iPad "Pro" would put it back into perspective.

SAMSUNG created phablet category in 2011, Apple copied it.

RIP Think different.

"Phablets" were not an innovation, all they did is make a bigger phone in the form factor Apple created. And it sure isn't bad that Apple is finally joining them.

The 3.5" iPhone screen ratio is 3:2, which is even closer to 4:3 than 16:10.

yep, my mistake. altho, that difference between 1.5 to 1 and 1.6 to 1 is pretty small. You do get a tiny sliver more width with 16:9 over 3:2 (http://www.displaywars.com/3,5-inch-3x2-vs-4-inch-16x9), but still my point is the vast majority of the increase was in screen height, which just gives you an extra row of icons. It just wasn't useful to me. Plus it looks weird.

Big is not any technical spec. Saying copy big sounds ignorant. What if I say other phones copy Apple for making multi-touch smartphone..in fact, the whole current smartphone form factor, and it sounds more appropriate than saying copy Big..

----------

Mini = smaller size
Air = standard size
Pro = bigger size with better performance

No, they're not. The name Air is meant for thin and light (light use, portability...) while Pro is meant for business, enterprise or professional with serious works. Air and Pro didn't mean large or small size. Therefore, iPhone Air or Pro makes no sense. iPad Air was named because it's so thin and according to Phil Schiller, it deserved the name "Air".

Thanks for the drawing!

I printed it out on heavy paper and then glued it to 1/4" foam core. It's really close to the 7.0mm (0.275") reported thickness of the new phones and lets me play with it a bit and slip into a few pockets. I was dead set against a 5.5", but now I'm seriously re-considering it.

So you were against 5.5 but never even used one in a store? I feel like most people who hate them have never used one...

Keep saying that. Chances are good no one will remember you said it and mock you with it for the rest of your life. ;)

So you are saying even Apple can make mistakes (by releasing a 5.5 inch phablet)?

He is right. MBA and MBP prove this.
But going by this a MBPA could exist. As could an iPad Pro Air.

Releasing a product that you don't like isn't a mistake.

Releasing a product that doesn't sell is.

17 inch MBP - mistake.
5.5 inch iPhone - we'll see. But all indications are that phones of this sort sell well.

Hell, Steve Jobs thought a 7-inch iPad was a mistake and he was very, very wrong. Nothing to be ashamed of being as wrong as Jobs.

Possible? This is the biggest leak in Apple history!

Bigger than iPhone4 because in the iPhone4 case there was just 1 leaked device. In this case, every site has its own iPhone 6.

I have a 5.5" on my second line that I use for note taking and reading at home. When I go out I take my iPhone 5s. I don't hate 5.5". But I'd never use it as my primary phone.

Jobs was correct my my eyes. Sure it will sell and make profit. But Apple is about quality and profits. And too many SKUs over time do hurt the business. And we don't have Jobs to come back and remove all the surplus SKUs from Apple over again like he did in the late 90's.

That's the difference between you and them. They have urges you don't, and they act on them. Don't be a hater.

Chill out man, I don't hate him.

But I do categorize giant phablet phones along with big-arse assault weapons. Guys who own them - and it is almost always men - are compensating for something.

Note that I do not consider the giant iPhone to quite fall in that category.

iPhone Air and iPad Air is really confusing naming when it's the bigger model.

no it isnt. it takes no cognitive effort to realize iphones are smaller than ipads. thus an iphone-air is smaller than an ipad-air.

No... that doesn't sound hateful at all.

So you think they have a big phone because their dog just died or their mother has Alzheimer's or something like that?

Everyone is compensating for something.

I don't know, maybe they are just well-trained consumers who feel the need to show off with giant phone.

It seems futile to psychoanalyze them beyond the "tool" designation. There are many tools out there. I may even be one myself!

With all these leaks, it's looking more and more likely that there will be a 5.5" iPhone 6. Personally i wouldn't mind Apple releasing a 4.7" and a 5.5" roll on the 9th :D
