Hi! So far I've enjoyed my return to iPhone (17Pro Max, using iOS 26.4.2), but in a trip of recent, and I had 5 cellphone bars, Apple Maps via Carplay stopped responding when tapping on the car's dash screen but became responsive a few moments later. Completely random. I quickly closed Maps from the dash via home button, restarted, and re-set the destination, and the issue seems resolved. I do not know if it's a hiccup with the iPhone (this hadn't happened before and I'd upgraded to 26.4.2 only very recently.) It's a small hiccup, but am wondering if others have had anything like this.

(Interestingly, the video stream in the background was unaffected.)

Thanks!

I've had the full-screen CarPlay map crash a couple of times on long roadtrips. Each time, I noticed that the full-screen map stopped following my progress for a minute, then it was suddenly replaced by the three-app screen. The map display there was still going, and when I went back to the full-screen map, it zoomed to my location and was fine. The Maps app on my phone was still going too. I didn't notice how many bars I had or anything like that.

This does not happen to be while using wired Carplay. But when I am on wireless carplay using a 3rd party dongle, the carplay crashes sometimes and restarts. I am on 26.3.1 though

Quick follow-up question, was the audio source used in the background CarPlay or another? (I think I had YouTube Music playing at the same time... will try other playback devices too to rule out possibilities. )

What kind of car? Stock or aftermarket stereo? Make sure your car is up-to-date. Some of those issues can be the fault of the head unit and installing those updates can be a paaaaain.

Thanks!

I normally use Spotify. But that crash/frozen carplay shouldn't be because of music app.

Thanks!

For me, it was most likely SiriusXM through the car radio.

Maps have been really solid for me. The audio has been more my problem. Sound drops continually. I have to turn the stereo on and off to get the sound working again. Although it does seem to happen more often when I have the map showing, much less when I’m on the Apple Music screen. Very annoying though.
